Download or read book Career In Theoretical Physics A 2nd Edition written by Philip W Anderson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-26 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume presents the scientific achievements of Nobel laureate Philip Anderson, spanning the many years of his career. In this new edition, the author has omitted some review papers as well as added over 15 of his research papers. As in the first edition, he provides an introduction to each paper by explaining the genesis of the papers or adding some personal history. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the author's work which include significant discoveries and pioneering contributions, such as his work on the Anderson model of magnetic impurities and the concept of localization; the study of spin glasses, the fluctuating valence problem and superexchange; his prediction of the existence of superfluidity in He3; his involvement in the discovery of the Josephson effect; his discovery of the “Higgs” mechanism in elementary particle physics; and so on.The new papers added to this edition include ”Pressure Broadening in the Microwave and Infrared Regions” — a condensation of most of the author's thesis; ”Ordering and Antiferromagnetism in Ferrites” — the best-known of the papers written by the author involving what are known as “frustrated” lattices; and ”Localized Magnetic States in Metals” — a paper mentioned in his Nobel Prize citation along with localization and superexchange; to name a few.A Career in Theoretical Physics is an essential source of reference for physicists, chemists, materials scientists and historians of science. It is also suitable reading for graduate students.

Download or read book 10 Simple Solutions to Shyness written by Martin Antony and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though statisticians report that more than 37 million Americans suffer from diagnosable social phobia, common sense suggests that nearly all of us have, at one time or another, had clammy palms and knocking knees because of an intimidating, uncomfortable social situation. The party where you donít know a single soul, the crowded lobby of a movie theatre, the presentation youíve been dreading for weeks-any of these have the potential to ruin your week without necessarily sending you to the psychiatristís couch. The ten simple exercises in this book help you shed your shyness and start socializing with confidence and Èlan. 10 Simple Solutions to Shyness examines shyness by symptoms: physical discomfort, anxious thoughts, and bothersome behaviors. Solutions follow, directly addressing all three. You can carry the book in a briefcase or purse for last minute support and extra confidence. Once the ten simple solutions are learned, they will become your constant companions, providing courage, poise, and composure whenever you need them most.

Download or read book Planning and Scheduling in Manufacturing and Services written by Michael Pinedo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on planning and scheduling applications. Planning and scheduling are forms of decision-making that play an important role in most manufacturing and services industries. The planning and scheduling functions in a company typically use analytical techniques and heuristic methods to allocate its limited resources to the activities that have to be done. The application areas considered in this book are divided into manufacturing applications and services applications. The book covers five areas in manufacturing: project scheduling, job shop scheduling, scheduling of flexible assembly systems, economic lot scheduling, and planning and scheduling in supply chains. It covers four areas in services: reservations and timetabling, tournament scheduling, planning and scheduling in transportation, and workforce scheduling. At the end of each chapter, a case study or a system implementation is described in detail. Numerous examples and exercises throughout the book illustrate the material presented. The fundamentals concerning the methodologies used in the application chapters are covered in the appendices. The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains various sets of powerpoint slides. The CD also contains several planning and scheduling systems that have been developed in academia as well as generic optimization software that has been developed in industry. This book is suitable for more advanced students in industrial engineering and operations research as well as graduate students in business. Michael Pinedo is the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management in the Stern School of Business at New York University. His research interests lie in the theoretical and applied aspects of planning and scheduling. He has written numerous papers on the theory of deterministic and stochastic scheduling and has also consulted extensively in industry. He has been actively involved in the development of several large industrial planning and scheduling systems.
Download or read book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering written by Peter Kittel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-08-31 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hyatt Regency Hotel, Columbus, Ohio was the venue for the 1995 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. Jim Peeples, of CVI, Inc., was conference chairman. Columbus is the home of the Battelle Memorial Institute, a pioneer in cryogenic materials development; the home of CVI, Inc., and Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc., two leading manufacturers of cryogenic equipment; and it is the home of Ohio State University, where research on liquid helium has long been conducted. The program consisted of 315 CEC papers, nearly the same number as for CEC-91. This was the second largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 252 papers are published here, in Volume 41 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Once again the volume is published in two books. This volume includes a number of photographs taken during the awards lunch on July 20, 1995. Photographs have often been taken during the conferences, but they have never been used. The pictures are of the awardees, the conference chairs, and the organizers. They are distributed through out the books on pages that would otherwise have been blank. The pictures can be found on the following pages: 28, 232, 334, 536, 640, 826, 990, 1032, 1202, 1462,1682,1888, and 1994.
Download or read book Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord written by Julien Cohen-Adad and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord is the first book focused on quantitative MRI techniques with specific application to the human spinal cord. This work includes coverage of diffusion-weighted imaging, magnetization transfer imaging, relaxometry, functional MRI, and spectroscopy. Although these methods have been successfully used in the brain for the past 20 years, their application in the spinal cord remains problematic due to important acquisition challenges (such as small cross-sectional size, motion, and susceptibility artifacts). To date, there is no consensus on how to apply these techniques; this book reviews and synthesizes state-of-the-art methods so users can successfully apply them to the spinal cord. Quantitative MRI of the Spinal Cord introduces the theory behind each quantitative technique, reviews each theory's applications in the human spinal cord and describes its pros and cons, and suggests a simple protocol for applying each quantitative technique to the spinal cord. - Chapters authored by international experts in the field of MRI of the spinal cord - Contains "cooking recipes—examples of imaging parameters for each quantitative technique—designed to aid researchers and clinicians in using them in practice - Ideal for clinical settings

Download or read book An Introduction to Systems Biology written by Uri Alon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorough and accessible, this book presents the design principles of biological systems, and highlights the recurring circuit elements that make up biological networks. It provides a simple mathematical framework which can be used to understand and even design biological circuits. The textavoids specialist terms, focusing instead on several well-studied biological systems that concisely demonstrate key principles. An Introduction to Systems Biology: Design Principles of Biological Circuits builds a solid foundation for the intuitive understanding of general principles. It encourages the reader to ask why a system is designed in a particular way and then proceeds to answer with simplified models.
