Book Cataloging for Small Libraries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cataloging for Small Libraries Classic Reprint written by Theresa Hitchler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries During the past ten years the author has lectured on the sub jcet of cataloging before many an audience of trained as well as untrained, experienced as well as inexperienced librarians of small libraries, students preparing for such work, trustees of small libraries, and others. The questions asked at such gatherings prove conclusively that the small library does not by any means presuppose a collection of simple books, as is too often taken for granted. If that were so, the simple directions given in the first edition of this work would need no amplification. Experience, however, has shown otherwise, and even trained librarians find themselves timidly doubtful at times in deciding a point, because lack of practice, experience and precedent are wanting to inspire the necessary confidence. Therefore, though this treatise is not intended to be at all dogmatic, I have attempted in this book to outline very fully, but in simple language, with not too embarrassing a number of illustrative examples, the best methods of treating various problems in cataloging, the complex as well as the simple ones, for the librarian of the small library who is ambitious to have her library a well cataloged one in as systematic, useful, yet economical a way as possible. Book excerpt: Examine cataloging and classification training programs around the world Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives examines the global development of educational programs for cataloging and classification in the library and information field. Library school faculty and professional librarians from more than 20 countries discuss a wide range of topics, including formal school and continuing education of catalog librarians, education and training for paraprofessional staff in cataloging and technical services, changes in library school programs, and metadata and information organization instruction. Faculty members and seasoned librarians from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Latin America, and the Middle East present case studies and overviews of library and information school programs, bibliographies of cited works in both Western and non-Western language literature, and plenty of helpful tables and charts. Articles presented in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives are organized geographically to make it easier to check which countries are covered in each region, and to determine regional similarities and differences. Political, historical, cultural, religious, and linguistic factors were also considered to demonstrate the wide range of educational efforts and programs to cultivate cataloging professionals all over the world. Topics examined in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives include: * education and training development for librarians in the University of Botswana Library * the library science school curricula in the Cross River State of Nigeria * the training of students in cataloging via distant education in South Africa * education programs in China * the education for knowledge organization (including cataloging and classification) in India * the current status of cataloging education in Japan * on the job training of catalog librarians in South Korea * the education for cataloging in Australia * how catalog librarians are trained in Germany and Austria * recent changes to the library education system in Poland * a critical study of cataloging instruction within the library and information science programs in Spain * a recent survey of graduate education and training for cataloging and classification in the United Kingdom * an overview of the education for cataloging and classification in Mexico * the current status of cataloging and classification education in Egypt * recent changes to cataloging teaching in Israel * the continuing education for catalogers in Saudi Arabia * and much more Many of the articles presented in Education for Library Cataloging: International Perspectives document the initial efforts to introduce education for cataloging in particular countries, including Egypt and Japan. Book RDA Made Simple

Download or read book RDA Made Simple written by Amy Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking for a comprehensive, all-in-one guide to RDA that keeps it simple and provides exactly what you need to know? This book covers planning and training considerations, presents relevant FRBR and FRAD background, and offers practical, step-by-step cataloging advice for a variety of material formats. The new cataloging standard, Resource Description and Access (RDA), will have far-reaching impacts on your library in terms of how it approaches resource description and access. RDA has been in use at the U.S. Library of Congress since early 2013 and is being widely adopted in the international library community. Today's catalogers need to understand RDA's basic concepts and principles as well as how to apply its rules in order to provide relevant information services in the 21st-century. This book helps you tackle the challenges of implementing the new cataloging code (RDA/Resource Description and Access) in the MARC environment, providing emphasis on practical, straightforward RDA advice for today's busy cataloger. After a general discussion on planning and training for RDA, the author—a technical services/systems librarian with more than two decades' experience—presents a comprehensive review of RDA's conceptual basis in FRBR and FRAD before providing easy-to-follow, practical guidance on cataloging today's diverse library resources using the new code, covering print, audiovisual, and digital materials. The book is a must-have resource for librarians who catalog on a broad, general level, with or without authority work, and who may or may not be cataloging specialists, but are responsible for handling many different formats. Catalogers at busy libraries committed to getting their new materials out to their users as quickly as possible will also find this work extremely helpful.

Book Small Library Cataloging

Download or read book Small Library Cataloging written by Herbert H. Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely updated, with a new section on using the computer in the cataloging function, this new edition of a classic will be a welcome tool for the volunteer or paraprofessional in a small library. Covering the essentials in clear nontechnical language, Hoffman explains the how and why of arranging publications, the principles of cataloging (including description, main and added entries, analytics, the shelf list, cross references, and filing), and online records. Nearly 100 examples illustrate the cataloging practice. Why do you need a shelf list? What is an authority file? Easy to understand and practical, this gem illuminates the world of monographs, series, irregular serials, uniform titles, simple and complex subject headings, tracings, and location codes. Even the world of the small library is startlingly complex--Hoffman's guide will simplify it. Reviews of previous editions: "Hoffman's guide to simplified cataloging practice will be a great help...this handbook lays out the options of collection organization clearly and in everyday language." -Booklist "Because of its emphasis on fundamentals, rigorous reasoning, and its readable style, the book is also helpful for library school students as well as for practicing librarians." -Reference & Research Book News "...will provide its intended reader, the nonprofessional or volunteer in charge of a small library, with solid, well-organized information necessary to catalog a collection systematically." Book Standard Cataloging for School and Public Libraries

Download or read book Standard Cataloging for School and Public Libraries written by Sheila S. Intner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proven resource for librarians and students, this updated classic opens the door to understanding current library cataloging processes, shows you how to use them to create standard catalog records, and provides guidance in managing the cataloging workflow. Library cataloging and classification tools are constantly improving, making this concise guide a necessity for any librarian or library student seeking improved understanding of the practical process of cataloging today. With the release of RDA, a new code for description, and a new edition of Dewey Classification, it's time for every library to add this fifth edition of a classic reference to your resources. Two Margaret Mann Citation winners update you on the five basic steps in standardized library cataloging: describing and adding access points for resources; assigning subject headings using Sears List or Library of Congress subject headings; classifying them using the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification systems; and digitizing the resulting records. The book opens with a brief look at the environment in which cataloging now functions, especially in response to advances in digital access. It clarifies terminology, explores new and changed applications, and enhances understanding of basic principles for those responsible for creating cataloging data. To get you ready for tomorrow, the edition closes with a brief look at trends likely to affect cataloging in the foreseeable future.
