Download or read book Similarity in Diversity written by D. L. Morabito and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together interdisciplinary topics in condensed matter theory and related disciplines, with an emphasis on the common concerns of (mostly) theorists applying advanced many-particle methods in diverse areas: solid state and low temperature physics; atomic, sub-atomic, and statistical physics; engineering sciences, keeping a sharp focus on theoretical developments which cross borders between subfields of condensed matter physics and which provide new approaches to outstanding problems. The book records the fascinating variety of new results associated with the idea of similarity in diversity. In perusing this volume, the reader will be stimulated to discern threads of similarity in the great diversity of physical phenomena and theoretical models proposed to explain them; and indeed there are threads that can be glimpsed in the table of contents, and ramifications of these threads as one reads through the articles. One conclusion is clear: the search for similarity in diversity is a powerful approach to interdisciplinary science.

Book Molecular Diversity in Drug Design

Download or read book Molecular Diversity in Drug Design written by P.M. Dean and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-10-31 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the theoretical problems associated with molecular diversity as it is being applied in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, this book deals with algorithms that are involved in understanding chemical space and selection of diverse sets of structures. The algorithms also deal with the problem of focused diversity where chemical libraries are being created within a structured physical volume. Diversity is necessarily connected to combinational chemistry, although this book is limited to the application of diversity methods to combinational chemistry and does not deal with synthetic methods. It is this focus on algorithms and strategies for exploiting molecular diversity that makes it different from books on combinational chemistry. The intended readership of the book falls into two categories: those actively engaged in applying molecular diversity in the chemical industry and those in academia who are developing strategies to embrace, understand and accept the many problems thrown up by this new research field of molecular diversity.

Book Ecological Diversity and Its Measurement

Download or read book Ecological Diversity and Its Measurement written by Anne E. Magurran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although diversity is one of the central themes of ecology there is considerable disagreement ab out how it should be measured. I first encountered this problem 10 ycars ago whcn I started my research career and spent a long time pouring ovcr the literature in order to find the most useful techniques. The intervening decade has seen a further increasc in the number ofpapers devoted to the topic of ecological diversity but has led to no consensus on how it should be measured. My aim in writing this book is therefore to provide a practical guide to ecological diversity and its measurement. In a quantitative subject such as the measurement of diversity it is inevitable that some mathematics are involved, but at all times these are kept as simple as possible, and the emphasis is constantly on ecological reality and practical application. I hope that others ente ring thc fascinating ficld of ecological diversity will find it hclpful. This book grew out of my work in The School of Biological and Environmental Studies at the New University ofUlster, Coleraine, Northern Ircland. I am indebted to all the ecologists there for pro vi ding a stimulating atmosphere. Foremost among these were Amyan Macfadyen and Palmer Newbould. A number of the figures and tables in the book are based on data collected in Northern Irish woodlands.

Book Diversity Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lou Jost
  • Publisher : Chapman & Hall/CRC
  • Release : 2008-08-01
  • ISBN : 9781420065244
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Diversity Analysis written by Lou Jost and published by Chapman & Hall/CRC. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity analysis examines variation in a system through the use of statistical indices to measure that variation. Presenting a consistent statistical framework for the methodology based on diversity indices and their estimation, this book provides an accessible introduction to the tools and techniques of diversity analysis in ecology. It enables readers to choose proper measures and interpret the results. Each chapter features a wide range of detailed examples that use real ecological data to demonstrate various applications of the methods discussed. Software for implementing these examples is freely available for download on a supporting website.

Book Similarity and Diversity in Information Retrieval

Download or read book Similarity and Diversity in Information Retrieval written by John Akinlabi Akinyemi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inter-document similarity is used for clustering, classification, and other purposes within information retrieval. In this thesis, we investigate several aspects of document similarity. In particular, we investigate the quality of several measures of inter-document similarity, providing a framework suitable for measuring and comparing the effectiveness of inter-document similarity measures. We also explore areas of research related to novelty and diversity in information retrieval. The goal of diversity and novelty is to be able to satisfy as many users as possible while simultaneously minimizing or eliminating duplicate and redundant information from search results.

Book Social Capital in Europe Similarity of Countries and Diversity of People

Download or read book Social Capital in Europe Similarity of Countries and Diversity of People written by Heiner Meulemann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social capital is not only usefel for the person who owns it, but it may also foster the integration of a society and the stability of a democracy. Friendly relations, social trust and norms of reciprocity ease the living together in a society and encourage people to take part in democratic decision making. This volume examines the differences in levels, causes and consequences of social capital between 22 European countries surveyed in the 2002 European Social Survey. At first glance, social capital differs strongly between countries. Yet the determinants of social capital differ strongly between European people as well. If one takes account of the latter, the former may no longer appear so large. The volume asks whether this is indeed the case so that a similiarity of countries goes along with a diversity of people. To examine this, muliti-level analyses are used in each contribution.

Book Data Analysis in Community and Landscape Ecology

Download or read book Data Analysis in Community and Landscape Ecology written by R. H. Jongman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological data has several special properties: the presence or absence of species on a semi-quantitative abundance scale; non-linear relationships between species and environmental factors; and high inter-correlations among species and among environmental variables. The analysis of such data is important to the interpretation of relationships within plant and animal communities and with their environments. In this corrected version of Data Analysis in Community and Landscape Ecology, without using complex mathematics, the contributors demonstrate the methods that have proven most useful, with examples, exercises and case-studies. Chapters explain in an elementary way powerful data analysis techniques such as logic regression, canonical correspondence analysis, and kriging.

Book Sharing a World of Difference

Download or read book Sharing a World of Difference written by Tove Skutnabb-Kangas and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world threatened by the loss of one of humanity's greatest treasures--it's linguistic heritage. But few realize that bound up with the loss of language is loss of knowledge about our environment. This book documents the complex interrelationships between the Earth's linguistic, cultural and biological diversity. It offers a general introduction to a complex field and outlines some of the key challenges facing sustainable development from cultural and educational perspectives. 'We need more than ever to find ways to share and maintain this world of diversity in which languages, cultures and environments are mutually supporting and sustainable.'
