Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rollicking vampire-filled graphic novel heist that will keep you guessing until the very end for fans of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Ocean's Eleven from award-nominated animator and comic book creator Stephan Franck "Silver is so big, bold and juicy! I absolutely love this book!” —Bill Sienkiewicz, Eisner Award–winning artist of Moon Knight and Elektra: Assassin “There may not be a better original vampire comic book in America than Silver.” —ComicBookBin "A dynamic, thrill-filled story— A really, really fun ride!” —Tim Sale, , Eisner Award–winning, bestselling artist of Batman: The Long Halloween There are only two kinds of objects in this world. The ones that shine and the ones that don’t. JAMES FINNIGAN, master thief, only concerns himself with objects from the first category. Those objects don’t hide in plain sight. They hide in dark places. When Finnigan loses his grifter gang’s entire fortune in a job gone wrong, he’s desperate to make amends. He stumbles on his chance to do so in the crypt of the Harker Foundation, where he finds a bar of pure silver and a notebook that tells of the Silver Dragon, an ancient, immeasurable treasure beyond imagination. It’s a tall tale, but also Finnigan’s only lead. To make up for what he’s lost, he formulates the heist of the millennium in search of the Silver Dragon. There’s just one catch: the famed treasure is said to be hidden in a castle full of vampires. Set in the noir-pulp era of the 1930s in a world where Bram Stoker’s Dracula is more fact than fiction, Silver is a genre-bending, rip-roaring romp that’s equal parts gothic horror and pure adventure. With its ensemble cast of misfits, beautifully sharp art, and whip-smart humor, Stephan Franck has struck gold in the first of this critically acclaimed duology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the theological and social dimensions of generosity in the book of Sirach and contextualizes them within the culture and thought of Second Temple Judaism. Ben Sira’s understanding of generosity is predicated on the tension between affirming the classic wisdom principle of retributive justice and recognizing its breakdown in the socio-economic circumstances of Seleucid Judea. He forges a new Wisdom-Torah ethic of mercy in which giving generously is an integral part of living “the good life”. While loans and surety are essential practices, almsgiving is the preeminent act of generosity. The fundamental theological logic at work consists in viewing the poor as proxies for God and is based on the economic structure of Proverbs 19:17. Giving to the poor is, in reality, a deposit in a heavenly treasury and will pay future dividends. By situating Ben Sira’s view of almsgiving within the wider framework of retributive justice and its breakdown, new light is shed on the practical tensions regarding the extent of almsgiving and its relationship to the support of the Jerusalem priesthood. The various dynamics of Ben Sira’s thought on generosity are situated within the broader Hellenistic world and in their foundational role for later Jewish and Christian thought.

Download or read book The Book of Legends Sefer Ha Aggadah written by Hayyim Nahman Bialik and published by Schocken. This book was released on 1992-11-10 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete English translation of the Hebrew classic Sefer Ha-Aggadah brings to the English-speaking world the greatest and best-loved anthology of classical Rabbinic literature ever compiled. First published in Odessa in 1908-11, it was recognized immediately as a masterwork in its own right, and reprinted numerous times in Israel. The Hebrew poet Hayim Nahman Bialik and the renowned editor Yehoshua Hana Ravnitzky, the architects of this masterful compendium, selected hundreds of texts from the Talmud and midrashic literature and arranged them thematically, in order to provide their contemporaries with easy access to the national literary heritage of the Jewish people -- the texts of Rabbinic Judaism that remain at the heart of Jewish literacy today. Bialik and Ravnitzky chose Aggadah -- the non-legal portions of the Talmud and Midrash -- for their anthology. Loosely translated as "legends", Aggadah includes the genres of biblical exegesis, stories about biblical characters, the lives of the Talmudic era sages and their contemporary history, parables, proverbs, and folklore. A captivating melange of wisdom and piety, fantasy and satire, Aggadah is the expressive medium of the Jewish creative genius. The arrangement of this compendium reflects the theological concerns of the Rabbinic sages: the role of Israel and the nations; God, good and evil; human relations; the world of nature; and the art of healing. Here, the reader who wants to explore traditional Jewish views on a particular subject is treated to a selection of relevant texts at his fingertips but will soon become immersed in a way of thinking, exploring, and questioning that is the hallmark of Jewish inquiry. "Whatever the imagination can invent is found in the Aggadah," wrote the historian Leopold Zunz, "its purpose always being to teach man the ways of God." The Book of Legends/Sefer Ha-Aggadah, now available in william Braude's superbly annotated translation, enables modern Jews to experience firsthand the richness and excitement of their cultural inheritance.

Download or read book written by April D. Adeshile and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world people are the same, and what is even more interesting, we all have the same hopes, we desire many of the same dreams, we share the same emotions, we all share a time to laugh, a time to cry, a time to fear, a time to love, a time to care, a time to feel angry, a time when we are sad, and a time when joy brings us to that place of total happiness, peace, and tranquility; which is a sure moment in time. And the truth of the matter is this, God is on the throne and it is only in Him, through Him, and by Him, that all things are made possible for us. Because He has assured us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. God is a BIG GOD! And whatever your challenge is, whatever your struggle is, whatever concern you may have, and whatever it is that you are dealing with in your life today, there is nothing too hard for God. In God works Through Human Personality the author exemplifies beautifully through inspiration what God can do, and will do for you, when you put your trust in Him. The word of God clearly encourages us by this saying; if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us, and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 1 John 5: 14-15 And know that there are angels we see, and there are angels we don''t see, this is how we know that God is our comforter, our helper, our maker, and our redeemer, through the many trials we face, and the courage we are inspired through the men, women and sometimes children that we cross on a daily basis. There is no respect of persons with God. Romans 2: 11 We are encouraged to let brotherly love continue. And be not forgetful to entertain strangers; forthereby some have entertained angels, remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. Hebrews 13: 1-3 How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133: 1 The Lord said
