Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and raised in Houston, Texas, in the 1950s, I was raised during a time of political and racial unrest in America. However, I never witnessed a firsthand account of racism. I was exposed to the civil unrest in America, the unveiling of a truly dedicated, amazing, and remarkable man, Reverend Martin L. King Jr. (who in my opinion was the greatest black man in my lifetime). Also I believe that since the untimely death of Reverend King, the black community had never had a leader of relevance (my opinion). Silence But Determined tells a compelling true life story describing horrific life-changing events. The manner in which justice was utilized in my experience is reflective in comparison with modern-day slavery. A systematic doctrine of racism that I am led to believe that it does not really exist. The compelling doctrine that most people have come to believe in and live by has manifested grave injustice to people of color. I myself (not the victim) attempt to uncover the hidden truth about America's judicial system. Right out of the proverbial story needle in a haystack, when the question "who's to blame?" arises from the supporters and naysayers alike, how can I give a definitive answer? Well I'm determined to accomplish the feat of uncovering the needle in the haystack and give my answer to the question "who is to blame?" We tend to view life from a smaller vision looking through a smaller glass. So what must be done to give everyone a view from the same size of the glass? Reconstruct the criminal justice system in America (specifically in Houston, Texas) from top to bottom. A very unfortunate turn of events that definitely had a negative impact on a generation of black people's lives. I speak of how the system chewed me up and spit me out. Literally! For twenty-three years and three hundred and fifty-three days, I truly was enslaved in the criminal justice (not really) system. However, I instinctively rose from what many would have called being dead. I want to give tribute to God almighty! Truly God has brought me along to give this testimonial of how strong faith and belief can overcome any obstacle. God truly has the last word!

Book excerpt: A beautiful commemorative edition of Dr. Martin Luther King's essay "Letter from Birmingham Jail," part of Dr. King's archives published exclusively by HarperCollins. With an afterword by Reginald Dwayne Betts On April 16, 1923, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., responded to an open letter written and published by eight white clergyman admonishing the civil rights demonstrations happening in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. King drafted his seminal response on scraps of paper smuggled into jail. King criticizes his detractors for caring more about order than justice, defends nonviolent protests, and argues for the moral responsibility to obey just laws while disobeying unjust ones. "Letter from Birmingham Jail" proclaims a message - confronting any injustice is an acceptable and righteous reason for civil disobedience. This beautifully designed edition presents Dr. King's speech in its entirety, paying tribute to this extraordinary leader and his immeasurable contribution, and inspiring a new generation of activists dedicated to carrying on the fight for justice and equality.

Book excerpt: "You have the right to remain silent." These words, drawn from the Supreme Court's famous decision in Miranda v. Arizona, have had a tremendous impact on the public imagination. But what a strange right this is. Of all the activities that are especially worthy of protection, that define us as human beings, foster human potential, and symbolize human ambition, why privilege silence? This thoughtful and iconoclastic book argues that silence can be an expression of freedom. A defiant silence demonstrates determination, courage, and will. Martyrs from a variety of faith traditions have given up their lives rather than renounce their god. During the Vietnam era, thousands of anonymous draft resisters refused to take the military oath that was a prelude to participating in what they believed was an immoral war. These silences speak to us. They are a manifestation of connection, commitment, and meaning. This link between silence and freedom is apparent in a variety of different contexts, which Seidman examines individually, including silence and apology, silence and self-incrimination, silence and interrogation, silence and torture, and silence and death. In discussing the problem of apology, for example, the author argues that although apology plays a crucial role in maintaining the illusion of human connection, the right to not apologize is equally crucial. Similarly, prohibition against torture--so prominent in national debate since the events of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib--is best understood as a right to silence, essential in preserving the distinction between mind and body on which human freedom depends.

Book excerpt: The moon hung high in the cloudless night sky, casting a pale, eerie glow over the small coastal town. The waves crashed rhythmically against the rocky shore, their sound a ghostly whisper in the quiet darkness. A lone figure moved through the shadows, blending seamlessly with the night. In the heart of the town, an old, abandoned warehouse stood silent and foreboding. Its broken windows and crumbling façade hinted at a long-forgotten past, now shrouded in mystery and neglect. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of damp wood and decay. The figure moved with practiced precision, every step calculated and deliberate. Clad in black from head to toe, the killer wore gloves to avoid leaving any trace. In their hand, a slender, gleaming knife caught the faint moonlight that streamed through the broken windows. On the cold, concrete floor lay the latest victim—a young woman in her early twenties, her lifeless eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. The killer had worked quickly, efficiently. The cut was clean, a single, precise stroke to the throat that ensured silence and a swift death. There was no sign of struggle, no indication of a fight. The victim had been taken by surprise; her fate sealed in a matter of seconds. The killer knelt beside the body, meticulously arranging the woman’s hands over her chest, a macabre semblance of peace. From a small pouch, they extracted a single white lily and placed it delicately on the victim’s chest. The flower’s stark whiteness contrasted sharply with the dark pool of blood spreading beneath her. The killer stood, surveying their work with a cold, detached satisfaction. There were no fingerprints, no footprints, nothing that could link them to the crime. They had perfected their methods over the years, leaving behind only a haunting signature—a silent witness to their presence. As the killer melted back into the shadows, the sound of distant sirens began to pierce the night. The police would arrive soon, but by then, the killer would be long gone, a phantom slipping away into the darkness. Outside, the night continued its relentless march toward dawn. The town slept on, unaware that another life had been claimed, another soul lost to the enigmatic predator who moved unseen among them. The moonlight dimmed as clouds began to gather, casting the town into deeper shadow. The scene was set, the stage prepared for the arrival of Dr. Sarah Winters, who would soon find herself drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who was always one step ahead. And so, the dance of death continued, silent and unseen, beneath the indifferent gaze of the night.

Book Knowledge Language and Silence

Download or read book Knowledge Language and Silence written by Anna Brożek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Izydora Dąmbska (1904-1982) was a Polish philosopher; a student of Kazimierz Twardowski, and his last assistant. Her output consists of almost 300 publications. The main domains of her research were semiotics, epistemology and broadly understood methodology as well as axiology and history of philosophy. Dąmbska’s approach to philosophical problems reflected tendencies that were characteristic of the Lvov-Warsaw School. She applied high methodological standards but has never limited the domain of analyzed problems in advance. The present volume includes twenty-eight translations of her representative papers. As one of her pupils rightly wrote: “Dąmbska’s works may help everyone [...] to think clearly. Her attitude of an unshaken philosopher may help anyone to hold oneself straight, and, if necessary, to get up after a fall”.

Book excerpt: Ive often wondered, and Im sure others have too, what goes through a persons mind when trials and tribulations arise in their life. Im not just talking about the difficult times but the joyful ones too. We ask ourselves questions like, What makes a person stay in an abusive relationship when its so easy to walk away? Why do some people cry after receiving good news? Why is the homeless man smiling while living in a cardboard box? Why did the mother who just buried her murdered child forgive his murderer? These are just some of the questions we ponder. How blessed I am that I get to share some of those stories with you. Silent Thoughts is just that, the thoughts of a person who may be going through similar situations in their life. Since we dont know their journey, who are we to judge them? I think its best that we simply listen and learn as their situations teach us about life, and while were doing that, who knows, a few secrets may be revealed and save us a little pain or increase the joyful life were already living. Roszy is left alone and seven months pregnant with their two sons, Erwin (the author, Yitzchak Mayer) and Jackie. Unable to locate her husband, who later will die in Auschwitz, Roszy decides to escape from Nazi-occupied France to Switzerland. They board a train to Saint-Claude, on the Swiss border, carrying false French documents and, in Roszy's bag, diamonds embedded in a bar of laundry soap. Book excerpt: Author Rebecca Waites grew up in a violent home in the midst of a violent society. Belfast in the 1970s was a rough place, and it changed the way she saw the world forever. Silent No More offers an authentic account of the life of a working-class Belfast woman, following Waites from her earliest beginnings through middle age and on to her years as a grandmother. She shares how and why she survived the turmoil that marred her early life, dealing her abusive father and living through the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Her marriage to a sadistic, manipulative man brought further problems for her and her children, having lasting effects on their relationships. She began writing for her children, now adults, to help them understand what her history had been like from her perspective, and now she hopes her story may help others in similar circumstances who feel helpless and alone. The memoir presents the life story of a woman who lived through a violent and turbulent time in the midst of an abusive upbringing and yet found peace and triumph in her own way.
