However, the traffickers are equally persistent in their endeavors to preserve their lucrative business of selling human beings. The war between the two sides has been nonstop, and though there have been numerous victories over the years, the team's fortitude is failing. While home for a much-needed break, Billy gets drawn into another case, one that could be his toughest yet. A fourteen-year-old girl has gone missing, and the perpetrators this time are two billionaires, Bode Horowitz and Sebastian Drakos. The silken web of depravity these two men have spun has been impenetrable. Surrounded by influential friends of great wealth, authority, and intelligence, the elite pedophiles have been allowed to travel openly with their victims. The fact that they believe themselves to be untouchable enrages Billy, and he calls his team together once more--this time, stateside. A plan devised to chip away at the world of horrors these billionaires have created has Billy and his team going after Horowitz's right-hand man, Mark Kennedy. A family man himself with two teenage girls, Mark has been indulging in the same perversion as his boss...and all without his wife's and daughters' knowledge. What Billy thinks is a race against time for one missing fourteen-year-old girl turns out to be a deadly race to save a pedophile's family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first feminist ethnography of the violence in Northern Ireland, is an analysis of a political conflict through the lens of gender. The case in point is the working-class Catholic resistance to British rule in Northern Ireland. During the 1970s women in Catholic/nationalist districts of Belfast organized themselves into street committees and led popular forms of resistance against the policies of the government of Northern Ireland and, after its demise, against those of the British. In the abundant literature on the conflict, however, the political tactics of nationalist women have passed virtually unnoticed. Begoña Aretxaga argues here that these hitherto invisible practices were an integral part of the social dynamic of the conflict and had important implications for the broader organization of nationalist forms of resistance and gender relationships. Combining interpretative anthropology and poststructuralist feminist theory, Aretxaga contributes not only to anthropology and feminist studies but also to research on ethnic and social conflict by showing the gendered constitution of political violence. She goes further than asserting that violence affects men and women differently by arguing that the manners in which violence is gendered are not fixed but constantly shifting, depending on the contingencies of history, social class, and ethnic identity. Thus any attempt at subverting gender inequality is necessarily colored by other dimensions of political experience.

Download or read book The Discomfort of Evening written by Lucas Rijneveld and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE A stark and gripping tale of childhood grief from one of the most exciting new voices in Dutch literature Ten-year-old Jas lives with her strictly religious parents and her siblings on a dairy farm where waste and frivolity are akin to sin. Despite the dreary routine of their days, Jas has a unique way of experiencing her world: her face soft like cheese under her mother’s hands; the texture of green warts, like capers, on migrating toads in the village; the sound of “blush words” that aren’t in the Bible. One icy morning, the disciplined rhythm of her family’s life is ruptured by a tragic accident, and Jas is convinced she is to blame. As her parents’ suffering makes them increasingly distant, Jas and her siblings develop a curiosity about death that leads them into disturbing rituals and fantasies. Cocooned in her red winter coat, Jas dreams of “the other side” and of salvation, not knowing where this dreaming will finally lead her. A bestseller in the Netherlands, Lucas Rijneveld’s radical debut novel The Discomfort of Evening offers readers a rare vision of rural and religious life in the Netherlands. In it, he asks: In the absence of comfort and care, what can the mind of a child invent to protect itself? And what happens when that is not enough? With stunning psychological acuity and images of haunting, violent beauty, Rijneveld has created a captivating world of language unlike any other.
