Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 1992 Association des Ecrivains de Langue Française Prix Européen "I have lived, alone, in a cell, 157,852,800 seconds of solitude and fear. Cause for screaming! They sentence me to live yet another 220,838,400 seconds! To live them or to die from them."--from The Silent Escape Victim of Stalinist-era terror, Lena Constante was arrested on trumped-up charges of "espionage" and sentenced to twelve years in Romanian prisons. The Silent Escape is the extraordinary account of the first eight years of her incarceration--years of solitary confinement during which she was tortured, starved, and daily humiliated. The only woman to have endured isolation so long in Romanian jails, Constante is also one of the few women political prisoners to have written about her ordeal. Unlike other more political prison diaries, this book draws us into the practical and emotional experiences of everyday prison life. Candidly, eloquently, Constante describes the physical and psychological abuses that were the common lot of communist-state political prisoners. She also recounts the particular humiliations she suffered as a woman, including that of male guards watching her in the bathroom. Constante survived by escaping into her mind--and finally by discovering the "language of the walls," which enabled her to communicate with other female inmates. A powerful story of totalitarianism and human endurance, this work makes an important contribution to the literature of "prison notebooks."

After graduating with an Ivy League degree, he tried to take solace in the lucrative Wall Street job offer that awaited him. The Iraqi government attacked the Kurdish cities, towns and villages in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurds existed thousands of years before the arrival of the Arabs in the Middle East. In July 1963 the Iraqi troops brutally attacked the innocent Kurdish civilians. My father was a police officer at the local police station in Sulaimaniyah, and he knew that the Iraqi Military would attack our city and the other provinces of Kurdistan. My dad told us to be ready to leave the city and go to the town of Berzinje, we all left except my dad and then to the village of Wenderene. Then my father arrived too, and said the military imprisoned, and killed, so many innocent people including teenagers. We had two big photos of Mustafa Barzani and Mam Jalal Talabani, my father tried to break the photos, but he cut his fingers while doing that. The son of our x-landlord was killed without any legitimate reason; his parents buried him in the house. My aunties friend Kak Fars helped us a lot in the village. My grandfather had a donkey in order to get him to the vineyard in Berzinje. My dad asked us to go to the village of Wanderene and take some foods and blankets. We tried our best in order to hide from the Iraqi (National Guards), these troops were sent from Baghdad the capital of Iraq.

Having “married up” into New York society, Evie herself is the immediate suspect. Ostracized and vulnerable, she knows that to clear her name she must retrace her husband’s last steps. And so, joining forces with her husband’s best friend–and the only Manhattan lawyer who will accept her case–Evie dives into the mysterious underworld of the occult. Before long, the trail brings them to a charismatic medium, Michel Jourdain. Evie’s instincts tell her the smooth-talking Jourdain is a charlatan–and her only hope for exoneration. But getting close to Jourdain means embracing a seductive and hypnotic world where clues to murder come through the voices of the dead. Caught in a perilous game in which she is equal player and pawn, predator and victim, Evie finds there is no one to trust, perhaps not even herself. As her powerful in-laws build a case against her, and with time running out, Evie must face the real ghosts of her past if she is to have any hope of avoiding the hangman.

Book excerpt: A Breath of Life is Clarice Lispector's final novel, 'written in agony', which she did not live to see published. Sensual and mysterious, it is a mystical dialogue between a god-like author and the creation he breathes life into: the speaking, shifting, indefinable Angela Pralini. As he has created Angela, so, eventually, he must let her die, for life is merely 'a kind of madness that death makes.' This is a unique, elegiac meditation on the creation of life, and of art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some damages can't be seen... CHARLIE It wasn’t supposed to be like this. It was supposed to be one kiss, one simple kiss to test my conviction that I’m unable to feel desire after what those bastards did to me. Just a kiss, nothing more. And the only guy I trust enough to kiss without triggering a full-blown panic attack? Mark. It was just a test. It wasn’t supposed to be the hottest damn kiss of my entire life. Now I wish I’d never kissed him, because it’s destroyed our friendship. MARK Charlie was positive that past traumas had left her too broken to feel desire. She declared she was done with dating because it was pointless. But I could see what she couldn’t. All she needed was to just let herself feel with someone she trusts. She trusts me. Charlie knows I’d never take advantage of her. I suggested we kiss, just to test her theory, knowing her trust in me would allow her to relax and simply explore the moment. She startled me by accepting my offer. She stunned me with her passionate response. My own intense reaction rocked me to my core. Now I want the one thing I can never have: Charlie. In every way. NOTE: This is Book 2 in a three-book series. These books need to be read in order. Charlie and Mark’s journeys to self-acceptance will conclude in Book 3 of the SHATTERED series. NOTE: The series ends with a HEA, but the first and second novels do not. TRIGGER WARNING: This book contains subject matter which some readers may be sensitive to.
