Book excerpt: Time is of the essence in music because the ear can only perceive sequentially-one thing at a time-unlike the eye, which is capable of panoramic view. Silence and Slow Time proposes a way of thinking about music that is faithful to the experience of playing or listening during a real performance. Boykan argues against the common assumption that thematic relationships automatically insure musical coherence, because the repetition or the transformation of a theme is only meaningful if we consider when it occurs. This argument is developed through a close reading of passages from the full range of Western music. Analyses of dramatic narratives in Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin reveal a richness that can only be captured if thematic or voice-leading relationships are placed within a temporal context. Other kinds of narrative are explored in a Renaissance motet, and in the music of Wolf and Debussy at the end of the 19th Century. The book devotes several chapters to the great innovators of the 20th Century, and concludes with a detailed study of the Schoenberg Trio that traces its thematic and harmonic process to suggest a somewhat oblique relation to the apocalyptic moment when it was composed.

Book In Pursuit of Silence

Download or read book In Pursuit of Silence written by George Prochnik and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "elegant and eloquent" (New York Times) exploration of the frontiers of noise and silence, and the growing war between them. Between iPods, music-blasting restaurants, earsplitting sports stadiums, and endless air and road traffic, the place for quiet in our lives grows smaller by the day. In Pursuit of Silence gives context to our increasingly desperate sense that noise pollution is, in a very real way, an environmental catastrophe. Traveling across the country and meeting and listening to a host of incredible characters, including doctors, neuroscientists, acoustical engineers, monks, activists, educators, marketers, and aggrieved citizens, George Prochnik examines why we began to be so loud as a society, and what it is that gets lost when we can no longer find quiet.

Book Of Silence and Song

Download or read book Of Silence and Song written by Dan Beachy-Quick and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musings on joy and suffering, midlife and meaning, by a National Book Award–nominated poet and essayist praised for his “fine ear” (Publishers Weekly). Midway through the journey of his life, Dan Beachy-Quick found himself without a path, unsure how to live well. Of Silence and Song follows him on his resulting classical search for meaning in the world and in his particular, quiet life. In essays, fragments, marginalia, images, travel writing, and poetry, Beachy-Quick traces his relationships and identities. As father and husband. As teacher and student. As citizen and scholar. And as poet and reader, wondering at the potential and limits of literature. Of Silence and Song finds its inferno—and its paradise—in moments both historically vast and nakedly intimate. Hell: disappearing bees, James Eagan Holmes, Columbine, and the persistent, unforgivable crime of slavery. And redemption: in the art of Marcel Duchamp, the pressed flowers in Emily Dickinson’s Bible, and long walks with his youngest daughter. Curious, earnest, and masterful, Of Silence and Song is an unforgettable exploration of the human soul. Praise for the writing of Dan Beachy-Quick: “Intelligent, compassionate, exquisite . . . a unique voice.” —Cole Swensen “Rich, profound, fascinating.” —Los Angeles Times

Book It s Silence Soundly

Download or read book It s Silence Soundly written by John McGreal and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s Silence, Soundly, It’s Nothing, Seriously and It’s Absence, Presently, continue The ‘It’ Series published by Matador since The Book of It (2010). They constitute another stage in an artistic journey exploring the visual and audial dialectic of mark, word and image that began over 25 years ago. In their aesthetic form the books are a decentred trilogy united together in a new concept of The Bibliograph. All three present this new aesthetic object, which transcends the narrow limits of the academic bibliography. The alphabetical works also share a tripartite structure and identical length. The Bibliograph itself is characterised by its strategic place within each book as a whole as well as by the complex variations in meaning of the dominant motifs – nothing/ness, absence and silence – which recur throughout the alphabetical entries that constitute the elements of each text. It’s Nothing, Seriously, for example, addresses the amusing paradox that so much continues to be written today about – nothing! The aleatory character of the entries in the texts encourage the modern reader to reflect on each theme and to read them in a new way. The reader is invited as well to examine their various inter-textual relations across given conventional boundaries in the arts and sciences at several levels of physical, psychical & social reproduction.

Book The Power of the Moment

Download or read book The Power of the Moment written by Martin Boykan and published by Harmonologia. This book was released on 2011 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of the Moment is a collection of critical essays on some of the most familiar works from the musical canon. Not unlike literary essays by poets or novelists, it pointedly avoids abstract constructs in order to elucidate what it is that we actually experience in the course of a performance. On several occasions alternate versions of a passage are compared to the original to provide a graphic illustration of the composer's intentions. BR>Two chapters are devoted to Beethoven. The first movement of the Hammerklavier Sonata is compared with the Archduke Trio to explore how markedly similar harmonic plans may provide a basis for two very different kinds of music. A chapter on the scherzo of the Fifth Symphony points to the oddity of an added measure in the recapitulation that may seem too obscure to attract attention, but actually functions as an essential cog in the network of relationships that defines the movement. Seven songs of Schubert's Winterreise are studied with particular emphasis on the piano introduction and the critical effect of various kinds of dialogue between piano and voice. A chapter on Verdi's Otello examines the immediate musical context of the couple's kiss, which provides a profound insight into the underlying dramatic intention of the opera. And finally, a measure-by-measure analysis of a short piece of Bach illustrates how the complex associations aroused by every phrase can awaken the feeling that everything that happens is important, that every moment is lived to the fullest.
