Book excerpt: At them with the Bayonet - Donald Featherstone The Battles that won India - The Sikh war 1845 - 1846 For a century the British Empire had inexorably turned the map of the Sub-Continent to red. On the way there had been many formidable adversaries and several bloody wars, but the discipline, advanced weaponry and strategies of the British forces had always prevailed against superior numerical odds. By the 1840's the only power not subjugated was that of the Sikhs in the Punjab. It's army the Khalsa, comprised formidable artillery, regiments formed on European lines and trained by men who had served under Napoleon. The Sikhs themselves were a warrior culture, for whom war was life. Against them was pitted an army of a few British regiments, supported by the Indian troops of John company. They were mostly led by heroic but inept generals. Nevertheless, in four bloody battles the British were victorious and saved India from destruction by a whisker. This is the story of that war.

Amongst other things, the author recalls how the army band played "The British Grenadiers" before they were faced with the enemy, and notes that after some long marches through very heavy sands his regiment joined the detachment of the army under Lieutenant Harry Smith. The letter also includes a simple sketch to show the location of the regiment (fol. 2r).

Yet on the death of Ranjit Singh, unworthy successors and disparate forces fought over his legacy while the British East India Company seized on the opportunity and prepared for battle. In the winter of 1845, the First Anglo-Sikh War broke out. From the start, the two-month campaign was marred by Victorian arrogance and bluster on the British side and personal ambition, intrigue and treason in the Sikh camp. Five keenly fought contests ensued, including the great battle of Ferozeshah where the British force found itself caught between two powerful Sikh armies and came close to destruction. Declining to retreat, Sir Hugh Gough, the British Commander-in-Chief, told his second in command: "My mind is made up. If we must perish, it is better that our bones should bleach honorably at Ferozeshah than rot at Ferozepore: but they shall do neither the one nor the other." The fate of the British Empire in India would be decided that day."--Back cover.

Book Bancroft of the Bengal Horse Artillery

Download or read book Bancroft of the Bengal Horse Artillery written by N. W. Bancroft and published by . This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gunners with Red horse-hair helmets The author of this book set his heart on joining 'The Red Men'-the glamorous members of the Bengal Horse Artillery-during boyhood. He achieved his ambition and this book principally concerns his experiences with that famous regiment during the First Sikh War as the British Empire fought to curtail the power of the Sikhs of the Punjab in India. Bancroft was ever in the heart of the battle action and he has given his readers an intimate portrait of the mid-Victorian soldier on campaign during the six battles that could have cost the British India itself. Particularly interesting and enjoyable is his reporting of the speech of the soldiers themselves. It is full of colour and authenticity to the degree that is considered to be the inspiration for Kipling's famous Soldiers Three dialogue.

Book Bright Eyes of Danger

Download or read book Bright Eyes of Danger written by Bill Whitburn and published by . This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bright Eyes of Danger is rich in detail about the British advancement in India during the latter part of the eighteenth century, thus becoming the paramount power over all India except for the Sikh Kingdom in the Punjab. It gives a vivid account of the seven battles and one siege of the two wars with the Sikhs. The first was brought on by the demise of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the machinations of palace officials and rapacity of the Sikh Army. Despite traitors in command, the Sikhs gave the invincible British Army a run for its money. The Battle of Ferozeshah was a closer run thing than Waterloo as the British Indian Empire stood at the brink of disaster. At the close of the first war many expected a British annexation of the Punjab, but the Governor-General, Sir Henry Hardinge, considered the Sikh real estate too large and expensive to take on, besides which annexation would not play well back home. He opted instead for a quasi-independent Sikh State, and in deference to the parsimonious East India Company Directors in London, he charged the Sikh State war reparations, annexed the most productive province of Jullundar and sold Kashmir to the 'biggest scoundrel in India' for £75,000. The second war erupted with a rebellion at Multan and the British Army advanced to battle with a new Governor-General and the same Commander-in-Chief, Lord Gough, whose catalogue of tactics did not extend beyond the awesome charge of British bayonets. This was not enough at the bloody onslaught of Chillianwala, where both sides fought to a stand still. At Gujerat Lord Gough, with a greater number of guns than Wellington had at Waterloo, crushed the Sikhs into submission and the Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie, annexed the Punjab. Having rocked the British Indian Empire at Ferozeshah, Ranjit Singh's soldiers helped save it during the Great Indian Mutiny, and later in both the World Wars.
