La primera parte de este libro analiza cómo se efectúa la recognición de signos para comprender mejor la configuración de signos comunicativos. Con este fin se dedica al análisis sígnico con el propósito de hallar la presencia de constantes formales simples que, en sucesivas comunicaciones, van conformando los signos básicos (triángulo, cruz, flecha, ...). No se limita a una comprensión formal del signo, sino que se amplía el análisis de los aspectos formales a parámetros culturales y psicológicos. La segunda parte, parcialmente histórica, expone los sistemas sígnicos que las principales culturas han desarrollado, para fijar su lenguaje en el tiempo, entendiendo siempre los aspectos formales de estos sistemas a partir del contexto propio de las culturas donde se han producido.
