Pero, mientras se avecinaba la tormenta, la vida de Cristina y su familia transcurría apaciblemente. Acostumbrada a un sistema político y social que no podía cambiar, la clase media adopta una actitud cínica e irresponsable ante la vida y suple con fiestas y música la falta de oportunidades en el gobierno y la economía del pais. Atisbaremos por los balcones de la casona de Cristina y seremos invitados invisibles en sus tertulias y testigos mudos de los idilios e inquietudes que guarecen sus muros.

For the first time, the novella is presented in its original Spanish and in English, painstakingly translated and annotated by Phillip B. Gonzales. Manuel Sariñana came to the New Mexico territory from Mexico to work as a Spanish-language journalist. While covering politics, he wrote and published Impresiones de un Surumato en Nuevo México as a picaresque work, a common genre in Mexico that uses satire to narrate a drama based on concrete social issues in the author’s immediate vicinity. In his preface, Sariñana makes his intent clear: to address the unseemly manner in which New Mexico’s Democratic Party attempts to gain leverage in elections. But, in a caricature of two immigrant peons, he surreptitiously takes to task how nuevomexicanos look down on people from Mexico. Gonzales provides a critical introduction, an interpretation of Sariñana’s piece, and a historical framework to contextualize the author’s experiences and the events alluded to in the novella. The result brings this important work of fiction to a new generation of readers.

Through the analysis of a specific and unique national context, author Eva Moreda Rodríguez tells the stories of institutions and individuals in Spain and discusses the development of discourses and ideas in close connection with national concerns and debates, all while paying close attention to original recordings from this era. The book starts with the arrival in Spain of notices about Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877, followed by the first demonstrations of the invention (1878-1882) by scientists and showmen. These demonstrations greatly stimulated the imagination of scientists, journalists and playwrights, who spent the rest of the 1880s speculating about the phonograph and its potential to revolutionize society once it was properly developed and marketed. The book then moves on to analyse the 'traveling phonographs' and salones fonográficos of the 1890s and early 1900s, with phonographs being paraded around Spain and exhibited in group listening sessions in theatres, private homes and social spaces pertaining to different social classes. Finally, the book covers the development of an indigenous recording industry dominated by the so-called gabinetes fonográficos, small businesses that sold imported phonographs, produced their own recordings, and shaped early discourses about commercial phonography and the record as a commodity between 1896 and 1905.

He also fostered the development of Spanish nationalism in the concerto, orchestral music, and opera. He was thus the first composer to put into successful practice the nationalist precepts of his mentor Felip Pedrell. Moreover, he incorporated contemporary French and German trends into his Spanish style in order, as he put it, 'to create Spanish music with a universal accent'. In so doing he pointed the way for Falla, Turina, and Rodrigo, the dominant figures of twentieth-century Spanish composition.
