Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side-Lights on Scripture Texts Eastward in Eden lay the garden; and out of the garden ground there grew every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Of every tree of the garden but that might its privileged pair of tenants freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil might they not eat; for to eat thereof was all too surely to die. "All trees of noblest kind for sight, smell, taste; And all amid them stood the tree of life, High, eminent, blooming ambrosial fruit Of vegetable gold; and next to life, Our death, the tree of knowledge, grew fast by. Knowledge of good bought dear by knowing ill." So near grows death to life. For, as Milton has it in the Areopagitica, good and evil in the field of this world grow up together almost inseparably; and the knowledge of good is so involved and interwoven with the knowledge of evil, and in so many cunning resemblances hardly to be discerned, that those confused seeds which were imposed upon Psyche as an incessant labour to cull out, and sort asunder, were not more intermixed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hours With the Bible: Or, the Scriptures in the Light of Modern Discovery and Knowledge, From Moses to Judges According to Ebers, ' the limits of this tract stretched southwards in a narrow tongue, almost to the present Cairo. On the west side of the Tanitic branch of the Nile, which formed, in fact, its western boundary to the sea. On the south, on the other hand, it bent north-eastwardly from Cairo to the line of the present Suez Canal, which, however, it presently crossed, reaching the Mediterranean at Pelu sium, where the ancient fortified wall from Suez abutted on the shore. But any exact knowledge of the boundaries is perhaps, as yet, impossible, if we may judge from the con troversy respecting them.' Book Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture

Download or read book Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture written by Mark Giszczak and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God kill people? Why do the innocent suffer? Is Hell a just punishment? Why would God allow Jesus to be crucified? The Old Testament God vs. New Testament God - are they the same person? If you've read the Bible, you may have had these questions cross your mind. Or, you've heard your non-believing friends ask these questions to justify their disbelief. How do we reconcile these questions with our Faith in a loving, just God? The good news is that we CAN work through these difficult passages and arrive at a deeper knowledge of who God really is, leading to a closer relationship with him. Light on the Dark Passages of Scripture guides you through God's revelation, interpreting challenging texts, providing reasonable answers to nagging questions, and showing the mercies of a loving God. "The best book I know that explains - and doesn't explain away - the truly difficult texts of scripture. I can't recommend this book enough!" - Ralph Martin, S.T.D. "Guides us through the museum of 'dark passages' and eventually leads us to the display of God's love in Christ as the answer to the human messiness of redemptive history." - Taylor Marshall, PhD

It is set up as a beacon to show all wanderers the safe way, and yet its light shines forth from thick clouds of mystery and from abysses of infinite darkness. It describes all conditions of life, and it gives utterance to all desires and emotions of the soul. It has a song of triumph for the victor and a wail of defeat for the vanquished. It sparkles with the fervor and gladness of youth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Scripture Doctrine of Miracles Displayed Vol 1 written by George Hay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scripture Doctrine of Miracles Displayed, Vol. 1: In Which Their Nature, Etc., Are Impartially Examined and Explained; According to the Light of Revelation and the Principles of Sound Reason Secondly, There are several points to be examined concerning miracles, in order to have a complete knowledge of that subject. Some of these are more intricate and abstruse, others more plain and simple, which serve as a guide and introduction to the former: But none of the writers on miracles, as far as I have had occasion to see, has considered all these several heads in a full, natural and methodical manner. They generally write upon some one or other of them by itself, detached from the rest 3 and too often suppose their readers to be perfectly well acquainted with the ideas they themselves have of all other particulars, and upon which ideas their reasonings are grounded; but as this is very seldom the case, their arguments are thereby rendered more obscure and less conclusive, even where they have truth upon their side. Thirdly, Those who have treated this subject as Christians, and in defence of religion, have paid by far too little regard to what the sacred scriptures teach concerning it. Mr. Hume and his party not only dis card all connection with the scripture from their side of the question, but would laugh at their adversaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Humor of the Bible: A Literary Study While many have taken in hand to set forth in order the pathos and sublimity of the Bible, those literary elements comprised under the title of this book have rarely been mentioned. Feeling that here was a field untraversed, the author of this little volume began an investigation whose results were originally embodied in an article published some years ago in an Eastern review. That article is given in Poole's Index as the only one extant upon the subject. Since its publication, additional study has brought to light other examples of the use of Wit and Humor by the writers of the Bible. These later results were embodied in a course of lectures delivered last winter before the students of Lombard University, Galesburg, Ill. They are now given to the public in the present volume. It would be presumptuous to claim that these few pages exhaust the subject. Such a claim the author does not wish to make. Further research would no doubt bring to light instances that have escaped him. It is hoped, however, that these studies may be sufiicientlv complete to awaken interest in a long-neglected side of our sacred literature. Book The Christian Science of Health Based on the Scripture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Science of Health Based on the Scripture Classic Reprint written by Mary Starck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Science of Health, Based on the Scripture It will be necessary for the reader of this book to keep a Bible by his side throughout the time while he is en gaged in its study, as the references given must be read for the proper understanding of The Christian Science of Health, and as each new truth is grasped, it must be at once put into practice, as this will greatly assist in the comprehension of the rest. Unless this is done, the reader cannot expect to receive any benefit from the book, or from the Bible, whence its ideas are drawn. To those who do read and practice its principles, how ever, there will, without doubt, come the blessings of health-improvement and happiness which they have been seeking, and have sought in vain elsewhere. So the writer would say, Go, little book, the world is wide, and there are many souls waiting for the light which may come to them through thy pages; carry a bless ing to them, and so fulfill the mission on which thou art sent.
