In addition to the full range of organ-specific injuries, a number of important further topics are covered, including critical care of the trauma patient, trauma system organization, mass injury scenarios, the impact of new technologies, complications in trauma care, and ethical issues. All of the authors are leading experts, and the encyclopedia will provide an excellent source of information for both basic and clinical scientists and trainees in various fields.
Download or read book Role of the Seat in Rear Crash Safety written by David C Viano and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2002-10-25 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Role of the Seat in Rear Crash Safety addresses the historic debate over seatback stiffness, energy absorbing yielding, occupant retention and whiplash prevention; and it provides a scientific foundation for the direction GM pursued in the development and validation of future seat designs. It also describes the multi-year research study into the role of the seat in rear crash safety - first by addressing the need for occupant retention in the more severe rear crashes; and then by addressing the needs for an adequately positioned head restraint and changes in the compliance of the seatback to lower the risks of the whiplash in low-speed crashes.
Download or read book Accident Data Analysis of Side impact Fixed Object Collisions written by Lori A. Troxel and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a study of accident data on side-impact, fixed-object collisions are presented in this report. The Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) was used to determine basic characteristics of this type of collision such as seating position of fatally injured occupants, roadway type, surface conditions, and vehicle weights. The National Accident Sampling System (NASS) was used to examine these same characteristics for accidents of all severities. In addition, the effects of breakaway objects, guardrails, and impact conditions on these collisions were examined using the NASS data. Characteristics of side-impact, fixed-object accidents such as location of impact, body region injured, injury sources, deformation measurements, occupant age, and time of day were also investigated using the NASS data. The characteristics of fixed-object, side impacts were then compared to those of vehicle-to-vehicle side impacts.

Download or read book Automotive Accident Reconstruction written by Donald E. Struble, Ph.D. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automotive Accident Reconstruction: Practices and Principles introduces techniques for gathering information and interpreting evidence, and presents computer-based tools for analyzing crashes. This book provides theory, information and data sources, techniques of investigation, an interpretation of physical evidence, and practical tips for beginners. It also works as an ongoing reference for experienced reconstructionists. The book emphasizes three things: the theoretical foundation, the presentation of data sources, and the computer programs and spread sheets used to apply both theory and collected data in the reconstruction of actual crashes. It discusses the specific requirements of reconstructing rollover crashes, offers background in structural mechanics, and describes how structural mechanics and impact mechanics are applied to automobiles that crash. The text explores the treatment of crush energy when vehicles collide with each other and with fixed objects. It delves into various classes of crashes, and simulation models. The framework of the book starts backward in time, beginning with the analysis of post-crash vehicle motions that occurred without driver control. Applies time-reverse methods, in a detailed and rigorous way, to vehicle run-out trajectories, utilizing the available physical evidence Walks the reader through a collection of digital crash test data from public sources, with detailed instructions on how to process and filter the information Shows the reader how to build spread sheets detailing calculations involving crush energy and vehicle post-crash trajectory characteristics Contains a comprehensive treatment of crush energy This text can also serve as a resource for industry professionals, particularly with regard to the underlying physics.

Download or read book Side Impact Crash Testing of Roadside Structures written by Malcolm H. Ray and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a summary of 12 side impact crash tests performed at the Federal Outdoor Impact Laboratory (FOIL) to evaluate the performance of several types of roadside structures. The tests are described and results presented. The results of these tests are then combined with earlier test series and statistical models that predict dummy responses from test results are developed. These preliminary models could be used to evaluate the risk to occupants based on the response of hypothetical anthropometric dummies.

Download or read book Global Status Report on Road Safety written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, and between 20 and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey. The results show that road traffic injuries remain an important public health problem, particularly for low-income and middle-income countries. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up almost half of those killed on the roads, highlighting the need for these road users to be given more attention in road safety programmes. The results suggest that in many countries road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive while enforcement should be strengthened. The Global status report on road safety results clearly show that significantly more action is needed to make the world's roads safer. [Ed.]
