Book excerpt: Active Disturbance Rejection Control of Dynamic Systems: A Flatness Based Approach describes the linear control of uncertain nonlinear systems. The net result is a practical controller design that is simple and surprisingly robust, one that also guarantees convergence to small neighborhoods of desired equilibria or tracking errors that are as close to zero as desired. This methodology differs from current robust feedback controllers characterized by either complex matrix manipulations, complex parameter adaptation schemes and, in other cases, induced high frequency noises through the classical chattering phenomenon. The approach contains many of the cornerstones, or philosophical features, of Model Free Control and ADRC, while exploiting flatness and GPI control in an efficient manner for linear, nonlinear, mono-variable and multivariable systems, including those exhibiting inputs delays. Therefore, its early diagnosis, prognosis, and classification to a subtype have become necessary as it facilitates the subsequent clinical management and therapeutics plan. Computational intelligence (CI) methods, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), fuzzy logic, evolutionary computations, various machine learning and deep learning, and nature-inspired algorithms, have been widely utilized in various aspects of oncology research, viz. diagnosis, prognosis, therapeutics, and optimized clinical management. Appreciable progress has been made toward the understanding the hallmarks of cancer development, progression, and its effective therapeutics. However, notwithstanding the extrinsic and intrinsic factors which lead to drastic increment in incidence cases, the detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics remain an apex challenge for the medical fraternity. With the advent in CI-based approaches, including nature-inspired techniques, and availability of clinical data from various high-throughput experiments, medical consultants, researchers, and oncologists have seen a hope to devise and employ CI in various aspects of oncology. The main aim of the book is to occupy state-of-the-art applications of CI methods which have been derived from core computer sciences to back medical oncology. However, many of these advances are still criticized for low applicability, scattered publication records, conceptual vagueness, and a lack of proper scientific and commercial validation. To make matters worse, there is now a host of proposed commercial applications of both the insights from neuroscience and the application of neuroscience and neurophysiology tools to test consumer responses. While many of these approaches may be valid, many other approaches are either not properly validated, or may be flawed, misguided, or even outright lies. As a discipline, there is a need for both the basic and applied research in consumer neuroscience to become aligned. The purpose of this Research Topic is to provide this much-needed platform for such an industrial alignment. In doing so, this Research Topic will provide perspectives on three main areas: 1. distinctions between basic, translational and applied consumer neuroscience research 2. conceptual clarification on key concepts relevant to the science and application of consumer neuroscience 3. validation of consumer neuroscience methods and how they relate to commercially relevant cases. For this Research Topic, we therefore welcome submissions that combine academic and commercial research, all in the vein of making advances in establishing a valid, applicable consumer neuroscience.
