Download or read book Axioidea of the World and a Reconsideration of the Callianassoidea Decapoda Thalassinidea Callianassida written by Katsushi Sakai and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present section, Callianassida Dana, 1852, has recently been separated from the Thalassinida Dana, 1852; together these two sections constitute the infraorder Thalassinidea within the Decapoda. The section Thalassinida includes one superfamily, Thalassinoidea Dana, 1852, which is not considered herein. The Callianassida include two superfamilies, Axioidea Huxley, 1879 and Callianassoidea Dana, 1852. Those two superfamilies are reviewed according to the presence or absence of a rostral carina; cardiac sulcus(i); cardiac prominence; dorsal oval of the carapace; linea thalassinica; setal rows on carapace, abdomen, tail-fan, and pereiopods; the posterior whip of the maxilla 2 scaphognathite; a dorsal plate or lateral notch on the uropodal exopod; the male Plp1-2; and a median tooth of the prepyloric ossicle. In the present new classification, the section Callianassida thus comprises two superfamilies, Axioidea and Callianassoidea, 19 families including one new family and two families with a new status, 8 subfamilies including one subfam. nov., 116 genera including 41 gen. nov. and 8 genera sensu nov., and 419 species including 12 spp. nov. and 2 nom. nov.
Download or read book Gender at Sea written by Marleen Reichgelt e.a. and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 2022-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries seafaring people thought that the presence of women on board would mean bad luck: rough weather, shipwreck, and other disasters were sure to follow. Because of these beliefs and prejudices women were supposedly excluded from the maritime domain. In the field of maritime history too, the ship and the sea have predominantly been perceived as a space for men. This volume of the Yearbook of Women’s History challenges these notions. It asks: to what extent were the sea and the ship ever male-dominated and masculine spaces? How have women been part of seafaring communities, maritime undertakings, and maritime culture? How did gender notions impact life on board and vice versa? From a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume moves from Indonesia to the Faroe Islands, from the Mediterranean to Newfoundland; bringing to light the presence of women and the workings of gender on sailing, whaling, steam, cruise, passenger, pirate, and navy ships. As a whole it demonstrates the diversity and the agency of women at sea from ancient times to the present day.

Download or read book Australian Bryozoa Volume 1 written by Haylee Weaver and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryozoans are aquatic animals that form colonies of connected individuals. They take a variety of forms: some are bushy and moss-like, some are flat and encrusting and others resemble lace. Bryozoans are mostly marine, with species found in all oceans from sublittoral to abyssal depths, but freshwater species also exist. Some bryozoans are of concern as marine-fouling organisms and invasive species, while others show promise as sources of anticancer, antiviral and antifouling substances. Written by experts in the field, Australian Bryozoa Volume 1: Biology, Ecology and Natural History is the first of two volumes describing Australia’s 1200 known species of bryozoans, the richest diversity of bryozoans of any country in the world. It contains chapters on the discovery of bryozoans, their morphology, classification and fossil history, their roles in biosecurity and marine benthic environments, and potential uses in biotechnology and ocean acidification. It provides an authoritative reference for biology students, academics and others interested in marine biology.

Download or read book Large scale Experimental Test of Copper Sulfate as a Control for the Florida Red Tide written by George Armytage Rounsefell and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale attempt at controlling the red tide was made in the autumn of 1957. About 16 square miles stretching along 32 miles of shoreline from Anclote Key to Pass-a-grille Beach, off St. Petersburg, Florida, were dusted with copper sulfate (CuSO4·5H2O) at about 20 pounds to the acre by crop-dusting planes. The copper very quickly reduced G̲y̲m̲ṉo̲ḏi̲ṉi̲u̲m̲ ḇṟe̲v̲e̲, the red tide organisms, from several million to practically none per liter relieving the area of the respiratory irritation caused by the airborne toxin of G̲. ḇṟe̲v̲e̲. In 2 out of 5 areas the organisms rose again to concentrations lethal to fish in 10 to 14 days after dusting. This method is not recommended for general control, but will give temporary relief in local situations from the airborne toxin
