Book excerpt: The relationships between brothers and sisters are infinitely varied. These bonds last throughout life, creating character and informing behavior in a multitude of situations. In their path-breaking book, the first major account of the powerful emotional connections between brothers and sisters, two clinical psychologists chart this unknown territory, offering a theory of the ways in which siblings attach, create each other's identities, and affect the course of each other's lives. The influence of childhood intimacy, parental behavior, family turmoil, birth order, and gender are all examined. Based on a decade of research and clinical evidence, "The Sibling Bond" brings fresh insight to important clinical and theoretical issues, including attachment theory, the development of the self, and the emergence of sexual identity. -- From publisher's description.

Book Siblings in Adoption and Foster Care

Download or read book Siblings in Adoption and Foster Care written by Deborah N. Silverstein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normally, our relationships with our brothers and sisters are the longest relationships in our lives, outlasting time with our parents, and most marriages today. The sibling relationship is emotionally powerful and critically important, giving us a sense of continuity throughout life. So what happens when a child loses contact not only with his or her parents, but with siblings too? That is what happens in thousands of cases each year inside the child welfare system. Children are surrendered by parents - or taken by the government - and placed in the foster care system. There, they are often separated and sent to different foster families, or adopted by different couples. In this work, a team of top experts details for us how this added separation futher traumatizes children. This stellar team of internationally known researchers - some of whom are themselves adoptees - shares with us hard, poignant, and personal insights, as well as ways we might act to solve this widespread problem. Contributors address not only the importance of nurturing sibling bonds and mental health strategies to support those relationships, but also the legal rights of siblings to be together, as well as issues in international adoptions. Emerging and standing programs to encourage and facilitate adoptions that keep siblings together are featured, as are programs that at least enable them to stay in contact.

Book Sibling Placement in Foster Care

Download or read book Sibling Placement in Foster Care written by Kelly A. Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sibling placement in foster care has long been a contentious topic of discussion. The decision or desire to place siblings together when they must enter foster care has been based on policies, procedures, and strong preferences of child welfare agencies. There is much literature and research supporting the practice of placing siblings together; however little empirical research examining the context and possibility of sibling separation as it relates to foster parent and social worker perceptions has been conducted. Research based primarily on mixed methods of quantitative and quantitative aspects was undertaken and a small online survey conducted exploring: the experiences of foster parents caring for sibling groups in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL); the conditions under which separating siblings support the development of each child in the sibling group; and what foster parents and social workers think about separating siblings who are in care in the same home.

Download or read book Siblings in Foster Care written by Margaret E. McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, researchers in the social sciences have begun to examine the importance of sibling support and connectedness across the lifespan. Siblings may provide an important source of social support, friendship and instrumental support to one another from childhood to later life. The meaning of sibling connections for foster children, whose connection to parents and adult caregivers has been disrupted, is an important area meriting study. Unfortunately, until very recently, there has been a dearth of well-designed research examining the important developmental issues involving siblings placed in out of home care. Secondary data analysis on a subsample drawn from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), Waves 1-5, was conducted to examine the life circumstances and developmental trajectories of foster children. Three comparison groups were drawn based on Wave 1 placement status, consisting of foster children partially separated from siblings (n =67, representing a population of 19,077), separated from all siblings (n = 116, representing a population of 32,109) and placed together with all siblings (n = 68, representing a population of 13,303). Increasing child age, child race and foster parent employment outside the home were significantly associated with sibling separation at Wave 1. Child characteristics, including child behavior at Wave 1 were not significantly associated with sibling separation status. Children did not differ by group membership with regard to placement in kinship care, or placement disruption. Children separated from siblings spent significantly longer in out of home placement than children placed with at least one sibling. Children separated from all siblings were significantly more likely to have experienced emotional abuse as their most serious form of maltreatment. Children separated from all siblings had significantly less contact with parents than other children. More than fifty percent of children separated from all siblings reported having had no visitation with either mother or father at the time of the Wave 1 interview.
