Book excerpt: Winner, Trillium Book Award In Téa Mutonji’s disarming debut story collection, a woman contemplates her Congolese traditions during a family wedding, a teenage girl looks for happiness inside a pack of cigarettes, a mother reconnects with her daughter through their shared interest in fish, and a young woman decides on shaving her head in the waiting room of an abortion clinic. These punchy, sharply observed stories blur the lines between longing and choosing, exploring the narrator’s experience as an involuntary one. Download or read book Fishing Gone written by Sid Dobrin and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have a rapacious relationship with the world’s ocean, extracting immeasurable quantities of its inhabitants and resources, while simultaneously depositing unbound sums of pollution into it. If we are to move toward sustainable practices, then we must first move toward ways of thinking about fish and fisheries beyond mere economic agendas. And there is one group in particular who could make an impact: saltwater anglers. Recreational saltwater fishing is big business and big culture. The industry is one of the largest in the United States, but that has not translated into a cohesive effort, agenda, or ethic. Saltwater anglers, a diverse group with a range of motivations, do not belong to a single organization through which to galvanize significant voting or lobbying power toward conservation regulation. As a result, federal policymakers have traditionally focused on commercial harvesting interests. Dubbed the “most contemplative of pastimes,” recreational fishing provides a valuable perspective on how humans interact with saltwater environments. Fishing, Gone? builds on this tradition of reflection and opens up the saltwater sportfishing life as a method for thinking through the current status of marine fisheries and environment. Author Sid Dobrin calls on fellow saltwater anglers to reconsider their relationship to fishes and the ocean—the sport can no longer be only about the joy and freedom of fishing, but it must also be about living for the ocean, living with the ocean, and living through the ocean. It is about securing the opportunity to fish on while meeting the economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead.

For Sig Hansen and his brothers, commercial fishing is as much a part of their Norwegian heritage as their names. Descendents of the Vikings who roamed and ruled the northern seas for centuries, the Hansens' connection to the sea stretches from Alaska to Seattle and all the way to Norway. And after twenty years as a skipper on the commercial fishing vessel the Northwestern-- which was his father's before him -- Sig has lived to tell the tales. To be a successful fisherman, you need to be a mechanic, navigator, welder, painter, carpenter, and sometimes, a firefighter. To be a successful fisherman year after year, you need to be a survivor. This is the story of a family of survivors; part memoir and part adventure tale, North by Northwesternbrings readers on deck, into the dockside bars and into the history of a family with a common destiny. Built around a gripping tale of a deadly shipwreck like The Perfect Storm, North by Northwesternis the multi-generational tale of the Hansen family, a clan of tough Norwegian-American fishermen who, through the popularity of The Deadliest Catch, have become modern folk-heroes.

She provides a series of sample stories and gives practical tips on adapting these to suit different situations and meet different needs. Book Shut Up and Give Me a Valium

Download or read book Shut Up and Give Me a Valium written by Kelly Cronk and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridget Jones, step aside. This journal documents the gradual, exotic dissension into madness and despair, when a Sober Life Coach is paired with a drug addicted billionaire who refuses to follow directions. Their dysfunctional relationship, ultimately heading for a one-way trip to tragedy. A perfect diabolical mix of humor, mutual hatred, and ass-kissing. Chloe knew of the recent trend of hiring Sober Coaches (as sober bodyguards) where they would accompany their client 24/7 to prevent them from relapsing. Chloe was well qualified. She had sobriety and what amounted to a psychology degree in bullshit and deception. Questions was, did she want to put her personal life on hold for an entire year so she could travel with someone who might potentially relapse, overdose, and die on her? Was it worth the risk? These questions could only be answered by accepting the job and the adventure. "It's 'The Devil Wears Prada' meets 'Girl, Interrupted'"
