Book excerpt: It is said that everyone has a story to tell. But not every biography gets under your skin like the life of Shumba, who was born Alasdair on a farm of British immigrants in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. It is a happy childhood in the grandiose nature of Africa, which is abruptly overshadowed by the violence of the civil war in Rhodesia at the end of the 1970s. These are experiences that will shape Shumba. Shumba experiences what a life of peace can mean when he goes to London to study dance. But even there, there is light and shadow. His later career as a ballet dancer takes him to the world's great stages. It is the pain and grief over what he has experienced that make his style of dancing something extraordinary. But years pass before Shumba, by now a physiotherapist in Schleswig-Holstein, consciously confronts his past for the first time in connection with a cancer illness.

Book Lion Songs

Download or read book Lion Songs written by Banning Eyre and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Fela Kuti and Bob Marley, singer, composer, and bandleader Thomas Mapfumo and his music came to represent his native country's anticolonial struggle and cultural identity. Mapfumo was born in 1945 in what was then the British colony of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The trajectory of his career—from early performances of rock 'n' roll tunes to later creating a new genre based on traditional Zimbabwean music, including the sacred mbira, and African and Western pop—is a metaphor for Zimbabwe's evolution from colony to independent nation. Lion Songs is an authoritative biography of Mapfumo that narrates the life and career of this creative, complex, and iconic figure. Banning Eyre ties the arc of Mapfumo's career to the history of Zimbabwe. The genre Mapfumo created in the 1970s called chimurenga, or "struggle" music, challenged the Rhodesian government—which banned his music and jailed him—and became important to Zimbabwe achieving independence in 1980. In the 1980s and 1990s Mapfumo's international profile grew along with his opposition to Robert Mugabe's dictatorship. Mugabe had been a hero of the revolution, but Mapfumo’s criticism of his regime led authorities and loyalists to turn on the singer with threats and intimidation. Beginning in 2000, Mapfumo and key band and family members left Zimbabwe. Many of them, including Mapfumo, now reside in Eugene, Oregon. A labor of love, Lion Songs is the product of a twenty-five-year friendship and professional relationship between Eyre and Mapfumo that demonstrates Mapfumo's musical and political importance to his nation, its freedom struggle, and its culture.

Book Folk Tales from Zimbabwe

Download or read book Folk Tales from Zimbabwe written by V. T. Kandimba and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While he was growing up, Tsuro, the bunny rabbit, learned the hard way to treat others as he wanted to be treated by them. Being street smart is good, but its not always the best way to live with others. As children, we must never look down on people. We can learn something from our friends no matter how different they are. Amazingly, Kamba, the turtle proved that slow is the new fast. I, Victoria Taurai Kandimba, a mother of four, born and raised in rural Zimbabwe am a natural storyteller. I was inspired by my grandparents who were great folk storytellers as I grew up. I moved to the USA in 2000. In the warm evenings, in a dimly lit hut, after dinner, my two grandmothers, Mandisiya and Taurai, would entertain the family with these folk stories while we shelled peanuts. Everyone took part in discussions to discipline or praise characters in these tales and we thoroughly enjoyed it. They were parables that taught children to grow into good responsible people.

Book Lion Hearted

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • ISBN : 1682451216
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Lion Hearted written by Andrew Loveridge and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Until the lion has its own storyteller, tales of the lion hunt will always glorify the hunter.” —Zimbabwean proverb In 2015, an American hunter named Walter Palmer shot and killed a lion named Cecil. The lion was one of dozens slain each year in Zimbabwe, which legally licenses the hunting of big cats. But Cecil’s death sparked unprecedented global outrage, igniting thousands of media reports about the peculiar circumstances surrounding this hunt. At the center of the controversy was Dr. Andrew Loveridge, the zoologist who had studied Cecil for eight years. In Lion Hearted, Loveridge pieces together, for the first time, the fascinating life and murky details of this beloved lion’s slaying. In the tradition of Born Free and Gorillas in the Mist, Lion Hearted chronicles Loveridge’s long acquaintance with a host of charismatic lions that his team has tracked, often from birth to death. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Loveridge learned to love predators at the knee of his father, an eminent herpetologist who stored baby crocodiles in the family bathtub. After earning his doctorate at Oxford, he seized an invitation to study the lions of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. There he meets Stumpy Tail, who, despite her name, has the dignity of the Queen of the Animal Kingdom; Dynamite, a venerable coalition leader who, muscled out by younger males, sets off on an incredible thirty-seven-day, 137-mile journey to find a new home; and Kataza, who escapes another lion’s claws, and whom Loveridge twice saves from death at the hands of humans. And, of course, there is Cecil. Dethroned in an epic battle, he forms an alliance with a former rival. He also becomes a favorite of photographers and tourists—until the fateful night when a Minnesota dentist and his hunting guide entice the trusting cat with a free meal. Loveridge unravels the complexities of lion society and the dangers the cats face both within their ranks and from the outside world. Despite their ruthless reputation, lions can form deep emotional bonds—females live in prides, a sisterhood of mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts that can exhibit military precision when hunting in formation; males band together in coalitions to vie for control of territory and the female prides. They also display a wide range of emotional behavior, including mourning the loss of their mates, partners, and cubs. Africa’s lion population is estimated to have shrunk by 43 percent in the last twenty years. There may now be as few as 20,000 wild lions across the entire continent—far fewer than the number of elephants. While deploring the killing of lions for sport, Loveridge does not believe that banning trophy hunting, by itself, will halt the decline of Africa’s lion populations. He sees greater threats in human population growth, the loss of habitat to agriculture, and the illegal trade in lion body parts for use in traditional medicines. And he offers concrete proposals for averting the lion’s extinction. More than a gripping detective story, Lion Hearted is an exploration of humanity’s relationship with the natural world and an attempt to keep this majestic species from disappearing. “Lions are one of the most beloved animals on the planet,” Loveridge observes. “They are the national symbol of no fewer than fifteen countries. . . . Surely, we can think of a better way to save the wild animals we love besides killing them.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyranny of Ignorance is a collection of fictitious stories that depict day to day encounters of people. It parodes the steep political landscape upon which countries that have potential are made to slide. It narrows down to the core of African struggles, and singles out ignorance as the reason why people continue to suffer. The Congressman is not aware of the plight of the people he claims to represent and the people do not know the extent to which they are deceived. Tyranny of Ignorance raises concerns on matters like unresponsiveness to a worsening political situation, social decadence, and religious intolerance, the ineptitude of seemingly learned people and the need to rescue countries with potential from the clutches of totalitarianism.

Book Cry Havoc

Download or read book Cry Havoc written by Simon Mann and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 7th March 2004, former SAS soldier and mercenary Simon Mann prepared to take off from Harare International Airport with an aeroplane full of heavy weaponry and guns for hire. Their destination: the former Spanish colony of Equatorial Guinea. Their mission: to remove one of the most brutal dictators in Africa in a privately organised coup d'etat. The plot had the tacit approval of Western intelligence agencies and, according to Mann, the backing of a European government. Simon Mann had personally planned, overseen and won two wars in Angola and Sierra Leone. Everything should have gone right. Why, then, did it go so wrong? When Simon was released from five years' incarceration in two of Africa's toughest prisons, he made worldwide headlines. Since then, he has spoken to nobody about his experiences. Now, he is telling everything, including: * His belief that the CIA deliberately compromised the coup to court favour with Equatorial Guinea's President Obiang, in return for access to the country's vast oil resources. * How the British government approached Simon in the months preceeding the Iraq war, asking him to suggest ways in which a justified invasion of Iraq could be engineered. * The real story behind the involvement of Mark Thatcher in the coup plot * Simon will also tell of his pain when he had to tell his wife, Amanda, who gave birth to their fourth child while he was incarcerated, that he believed he would never be freed. This is Simon's remarkable first-hand account of his life: an account that will read like a thriller as it takes us into the world of mercenaries and spooks: of murky imternational politics, big oil and big bucks; of action, danger, love, despair and betrayal.
