An essential resource for experienced and aspiring CHROs, the book shows leaders how to best prepare for and perform this critical role. This comprehensive book shows how, in today’s extremely competitive work environment, the job of the CHRO has expanded to encompass many important roles. Among other things, HR leaders must adapt to and address the demands of an increasingly diverse and demanding workforce, globalization, stricter regulatory requirements, increased accountability to the CEO and board of directors, and the complexity of leading the HR function with often limited resources. This vital guide is filled with rare insights and practical guidance from some of the country’s most successful CHROs who have been in the trenches as well as top academics researching the field including Randy MacDonald (IBM), Eva Sage-Gavin (Gap Inc.), L. Kevin Cox (American Express), Mirian M. Graddick-Weir (Merck), and Dave Ulrich (Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, and The RBL Group). Sponsored by the National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR), the book covers a wealth of topics including how to develop a perspective and set of skills to effectively lead and perform in the role and how to approach strategy, management, leadership, ethics, and talent. In addition, the authors include information on forming and implementing activities that will further the firm’s strategy, advice for coaching and counseling the CEO, and much more.

Book Up Down and Sideways

Download or read book Up Down and Sideways written by Patricia M. Buhler and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one recent survey of 400 companies with at least 100,000 employees, the companies cited an average loss per company of $62.4 million per year because of inadequate communication to and between employees.\ \In another survey, 80 percent of HR professionals reported interpersonal communication as very important when advancing their careers. Perhaps more telling, directors and C-suite executives placed an even higher value on the need for interpersonal skills in the HR role: A total of 87 percent of directors and 83 percent of C-suite executives identified these skills as primary for success.\ \The HR practitioner with strong communication skills will be strategically positioned to have a great impact in the workplace. The role of HR professionals has become increasingly complex--and is likely to become even more complicated in the foreseeable future. Today's HR professionals have taken on a more strategic role that has increased their visibility throughout their organizations. \\As strategic business partners, HR professionals interact with executives, line managers, rank-and-file employees, and outside stakeholders. With this increased visibility comes an opportunity to influence the organization and its strategic objectives. This opportunity, however, depends in large part on the HR professional's ability to effectively communicate up (to superiors), down (to subordinates), and sideways (to peers).\ \Up, Down, and Sideways: High-Impact Verbal Communication for HR Professionals was written to help HR practitioners--at all levels--become better verbal communicators, thereby making them better at their jobs and more valuable to their companies. In addition to general public and interpersonal speaking tips sprinkled throughout, the book specifically addresses the many hats of the HR professional. Whether in a generalist or specialist role, HR practitioners' wide range of responsibilities can only be effectively met with strong communication skills. Staffing the firm, training employees, developing and implementing policies, and integrating HR needs with the overall organization are all responsibilities that require effective communication.\ \Just as the SHRM's HR Competency Model helps individuals "develop a road map to achieve your HR professional goals," this book draws on the application of those competencies to assist the HR professional in making a measurable impact on the organization's goals and outcomes.\ \- See more at: http://www.shrm.org/Publications/Books/Pages/Up-Down-and-Sideways.aspx#sthash.4kqMAUU8.dpuf.

Book The Brave New World of eHRM 2 0

Download or read book The Brave New World of eHRM 2 0 written by James H. Dulebohn and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology has had a profound effect on almost every aspect of our lives including the way we purchase products, communicate with others, receive health care services, and deliver education and training. It has also had a major impact on human resource management (HR) processes, and it has transformed the way that we recruit, select, motivate, and retain employees (Gueutal & Stone, 2005; Kavanagh, Thite, & Johnson, 2015). For example, some estimates indicated that 100 % of large organizations now use web-based recruiting (Sierra-Cedar, 2016-2017), and over half of the training conducted in America is delivered using technology-based methods (American Society for Training and Development, 2015). Results of a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) (2002) revealed that technology is one of the major drivers of change in today’s HR departments. In spite of the increased use of technology in the field of HR, relatively little research has examined the acceptance and effectiveness of electronic human resource management (eHRM) methods. As a consequence, practitioners are implementing these new systems without the benefit of research. Thus, the primary purpose of this issue is to review the results of research on a number of important eHRM practices including e-recruitment, e-selection, gamification, e- socialization, e-learning, and e-performance management. It also considers how technology can be used to manage task-based contingent workers, and examines the problems associated with cyberdeviance in organizations. The chapters in this series should be extremely beneficial for HR researchers and practitioners who are employing these new systems.

Book Open Source Leadership Reinventing Management When There s No More Business as Usual

Download or read book Open Source Leadership Reinventing Management When There s No More Business as Usual written by Rajeev Peshawaria and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From taxi rides, hotel stays, car driving, to communicating and paying, everything we knew as normal has changed beyond recognition. To lead effectively in today’s brave new world, you have to question EVERYTHING. For the first time in human history, knowledge is free and almost every boundary to communication has been lifted. This open source world has permanently altered the business landscape. And you can count on the fact that the pace of change will only accelerate. Yet... companies still rely on management tools and practices that were, at best, mildly effective in their heyday. In Open Source Leadership, Rajeev Peshawaria reveals the vision, insight, and practices he has used to help some of today’s largest and most influential organizations meet the open source world head on. It all starts with asking the right questions: What’s the most effective leadership style in a world of 24/7 connectivity? How has the very concept of leadership changed in the open source era? How do you inspire and reward performance in the “gig economy?” How do you measure engagement and effectively address the gaps? How can you lead innovation--quickly and continuously? Peshawaria reveals the answers to these questions--and they will surprise you. Based on his company’s groundbreaking research spanning 28 countries, he concludes that traditional industrial age thinking needs a massive upgrade to successfully navigating the brave new world of business. Open Source Leadership rewrites the rules of management, giving you a unique look at the most common misperceptions, illusions, and downright wrong information you’ve been getting about what works and what doesn’t. It provides a new, counterintuitive model for seizing competitive edge in any industry. Among other issues the book argues convincingly that “positive autocracy” must replace democratic leadership; talent and innovation are abundant not scarce; early identification of high-potentials is counter-productive; and setting employees free to do as little as they want will increase productivity.
