Book Shouting at Amen Corner

Download or read book Shouting at Amen Corner written by Ron Green and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shouting at Amen Corner is a collection of the best of Ron Green’s columns and articles from his 45 years of covering the Masters for "The Charlotte News" and "The Charlotte Observer." It’s a book about Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson, Faldo, and Wood, but it’s also about Norman, Weiskopf, Miller, and others who have come so close, only to see the Green Jacket slip away at the last moment. This book is unique in that it recounts history as it was being made, and offers a special intimacy and perspective. Not a behind-the-scenes expose about members, money, and power, but a story of golf’s greatest showcase event and the players who have created cherished memories over the last five decades.

Book Laughter in the Amen Corner

Download or read book Laughter in the Amen Corner written by Kathleen Minnix and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Porter Jones (1847–1906)—“or just plain Sam Jones,” as he preferred to be called—was the foremost southern evangelist of the nineteenth century. With his high-spirited, often coarse, humor and his hyperbolic style, he excited audiences around the country and became a key influence on Billy Sunday, “Gypsy” Smith, and scores of lesser known evangelists. A leading political activist, he played an important role in the selling of a new industrialized South and was thus a clerical counterpart to his friend Henry Grady. In Laughter in the Amen Corner, the first scholarly biography of Jones, Kathleen Minnix reveals a figure of fascinating contradictions. Jones was an alcoholic who became a pivotal supporter of the prohibition movement. He advocated women's rights when most men preferred to keep women on pedestals, yet he followed the South in its drift towards malignant racism. He praised Catholics in an age that feared the “Romish heresy,” and he embraced Jews as fellow children of God when many saw them as Christ-killers. Even so, he was shrill in his insistence that Americans worship a Protestant God, and like many nativists, he called for the deportation of the “trash” who had landed at Ellis Island. Progressive in some respects and reactionary in others, he was, in the words of one contemporary, “a sanctified circus in full swing.” Deftly written and exhaustively researched, Laughter in the Amen Corner offers the first in-depth assessment of Sam Jones's impact on revivalism, the progressive movement, and the history of the South.

Book Masters of Men

Download or read book Masters of Men written by Liam Hayes and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters of Men is the story of one journey taken, over half a century apart, by two outstanding golfers. But, this is more than a golf book. It's the story of two young men, and the people who filled their lives - the mentor who dominated Ken Venturi, the agent who loomed too large over Rory McIlroy, and the two young girls who became their first loves and lost their men as they became champions. Uniquely, it pits the incredible struggles and victories of perhaps the single most naturally talented golfer from the 1950s and '60s (Ken Venturi, US Open champion, 1964) against the game's most naturally talented golfer of today (Rory McIlroy, US Open champion, 2011). It puts them on the same tee boxes, on the same greens, on the same day. Masters of Men uniquely, and dramatically, brings together for two days, two remarkable golfers from two different ages in golf - on the final day of their greatest failure, and the final day of their most remarkable triumph. It weaves in elements of cultural and social history, examines the birth of two of the greatest golf courses in the United States, Augusta National and Congressional CC, and examines the journey undertaken by the game of golf, and its greatest players from generations past, from Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan, to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, to Greg Norman and Tiger Woods. It is an extraordinary story and one that will appeal to both golf fans and the wider sport-reading public.

Download or read book Living The Code written by Dakota Livesay and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historians agree that America’s greatness is a direct result of America being a frontier country for our first 300 years. To survive the harsh life of the frontier required people who were hard working and creative, with ingenuity and a desire to work with their neighbor. As far back as the time of Moses and the Ten Commandments, people have lived by principles that worked as guidelines for successful lives. And the same was true with the people who lived on the American frontier. Although they were 300 years in the making, these principles were solidified by the American cowboy in our last frontier. They became known as “The Code of the West.” To make this code relevant to our lives today, Dakota has used a large number of stories and examples from the past and the present that show us how to apply them to each of our daily lives; and as a result, live a fulfilling life.

Book Cane

  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Cane written by Jean Toomer and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2021-04-11T18:34:47Z with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1923, Jean Toomer’s Cane was widely heralded as one of the first masterpieces of the Harlem Renaissance, and its author as “a bright morning star” of the movement. Toomer himself, however, was reluctant to embrace an explicitly racialized identity, preferring to define himself as simply an American writer. Inspired in part by Sherwood Anderson’s short story cycle Winesburg, Ohio, Toomer conceived Cane as a mosaic of intricately connected vignettes, poems, stories, songs, and even play-like dialogues. Drawing on both modernist poetry and African-American spirituals, Toomer imbues each form with a lyrical and often experimental sensibility. The work is structured in three distinct but unnamed parts. The first is set in rural Georgia and focuses on the lives of women and the men who desire them. The second part moves to the urban enclaves of the North in the years following the Great Migration. The third and final part returns to the rural South and explores the interactions between African-Americans from the North and those living in the South. Although sales languished in the later years of Toomer’s life, the book was reissued after his death and rediscovered by a new generation of American writers. Alice Walker described Cane as one of the most important books in her own development as a writer: “I love it passionately, could not possibly exist without it.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
