Excerpt: ... which was set at nought by the builders and is become the head of the corner. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved," Acts iv. 11, 12. "Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ," 1 Cor. iii. 10. We have no more right to believe in many mediators than we have to believe in many gods, 1 Tim. ii. 5. This is a vital matter. 3. We must serve Christ supremely. We must put none above him, none beside him, none with him. The reason is, there is none like him. The Father hath "committed all judgment unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him," John v. 22, 23. His name is above every name, to the very end that " at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father," Phil. ii. 10, 11. 4. The service we render to Christ must be out of love to him. If we do not give him our hearts, his service will be drudgery. No Israelite, under an Egyptian taskmaster, gave a more unwilling service than does the poor man who has never been born again, nor had the love of God shed abroad in his heart. But when the heart is all aglow with love to Christ, his service is easy and delightful. If that love was perfect, as it shall be in heaven, the follower of Christ would have a continual feast. This love to the Lord Jesus relates to his person, his work, and his doctrine. There is a whole book in Scripture given to show the love between Christ...

Book Practical Preaching for Priests and People

Download or read book Practical Preaching for Priests and People written by Bernard W. Kelly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Preaching for Priests and People: Twenty-Five Short Sermons on Doctrinal and Historical Subjects With a Synopsis of Each Sermon The importance of this state of future being forms no portion of the present discourse. We know that for the spiritual part of our existence the whole work of the redemption was undertaken, and upon its eternal welfare is the entire energy of the Church expended. In all his troubles and afflictions the religious man consoles himself with the same con viction that lightened the trials of holy Job, and made even the pagan Roman poet cry out though for a different reason N on omnis moriar I shall not wholly die. But, however firm may be our belief in immortality, we must never forget that outside the domain of faith there exists, and has ever existed, a widespread area of doubt, and even negation, where the truths which we regard as the commonplaces of belief are looked Upon as nothing better than illusions and chimeras. The opposition which in the early ages spent itself in attacking the divinity of Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Just Do Something written by Kevin DeYoung and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OVER 300,000 COPIES SOLD! Why won’t God reveal his special will for my life already? Because he doesn’t intend to... So says Kevin DeYoung in this punchy book about making decisions the godly way. Many of us are listening for the still small voice to tell us what’s next instead of listening to the clear voice in Scripture telling us what’s now. God does have a will for your life, but it is the same as everyone else’s: Seek first the kingdom of God. And quit floundering. With pastoral wisdom and tasteful wit, DeYoung debunks unbiblical ways of understanding God’s will and constructs a simple but biblical alternative: live like Christ. He exposes the frustrations of our waiting games and unfolds the freedom of finding God’s will in Scripture and then simply doing it. This book is a call to put down our Magic 8-Balls and pick up God’s Word. It’s a call to get wisdom, follow Christ, be holy, and live freely. To just do something.

Book The Four Pages of the Sermon

Download or read book The Four Pages of the Sermon written by Paul Scott Wilson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing justice to the complexity of the preaching task and the questions that underlie it, Wilson organizes both the preparation and the content of the sermon around its "four pages." Each "page" addresses a different theological and creative component of what happens in any sermon. Page One presents the trouble or conflict that takes place in or that underscores the biblical text itself. Page Two looks at similar conflict--sin or brokenness--in our own time. Page Three returns to the Bible to identify where God is at work in or behind the text--in other words, to discover the good news. Page Four points to God at work in our world, particularly in relation to the situations described in Page Two.

Book Privilege the Text

  • Author : Abraham Kuruvilla
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers
  • Release : 2013-04-25
  • ISBN : 0802485022
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Privilege the Text written by Abraham Kuruvilla and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privilege the Text! spans the conceptual gap between biblical text and life application by providing a rigorous theological hermeneutic for preaching. Kuruvilla describes the theological entity that is the intermediary between ancient text and modern audience, and defines its crucial function in determining valid application. Based on this hermeneutic, he submits a new mode of reading Scripture for preaching: a Christiconic interpretation of the biblical text, a hermeneutically robust way to understand the depiction of the Second Person of the Trinity in Scripture. In addition, Kuruvilla’s work provides a substantive theology of spiritual formation through preaching: what it means to obey God, the Christian’s responsibility to undertake “faith-full” obedience to divine demand, and the incentives for such obedience—all integral to understanding the sermonic movement from text to application. Privilege the Text! promises to be useful not only for preachers, and students and teachers of homiletics, but for all who are interested in the exposition of Scripture that culminates in application for the glory of God.
