Book Short Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by John Howard Appleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis In this little book, the Author endeavors to provide a laboratory guide suitable for the use of beginners in Quantitative Analysis. 1. The course prescribed is so short as to be capable of study from beginning to end within the time allotted to an ordinary course of practical Chemistry. 2. On the other hand, it has been the aim to have the work include such a number of exercises as will enable the student not only to become acquainted with the methods of determining all the most frequently-occurring elements, but also to study a variety of type-processes. 3. A considerable number of explanatory notes have been provided. It is believed that these will be helpful to both teacher and pupil; to the latter these notes will not only be instructive - they will help him to work understandingly rather than mechanically. 4. The plan of the book contemplates regular recitations by the student. The author deems this to be a matter of great importance. Book Exercises in Quantitative

Download or read book Exercises in Quantitative written by W. Dittmar and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Quantitative: Chemical Analysis, With a Short Treatise on Gas Analysis A preliminary edition of this book, as many of my friends are aware, was issued a little over a year ago for the benefit of chiefly my own students. That edition, however, was little more than a reproduction of what had long had currency in my laboratory as a trypographed book. Hence this volume may be introduced as having already been used - and I hope not without success - in a largely-attended teaching laboratory for a series of years. However it may stand with analysis generally, quantitative analysis can be taught only by examples; and in the earlier stages of the course the technicalities of the subject are the principal things to be taught. Hence our exercises on "analytical methods" (section 2) are arranged, not according to any scientific system, but so that, at any given point of his progress, the student has become familiar with as many different operations as could have been learned during the time. To some of my readers the tone of the earlier exercises more especially may savour a little of mechanical drilling. Why tell the student so minutely what he has to do and hinder him from exercising his own ingenuity? Some ten years ago, if a book like the present had been placed before me, I should have asked this question myself. But I have since come to modify my views. The technicalities of quantitative analysis are the very things which the student is not likely to find out by himself. He had better be drilled into doing them correctly. What is the good, for instance, of letting him spoil a series of ammonia determinations by mismanaging his chloro-platinate precipitates? It surely is better to show him quite directly what he has to do; and if it is, why should not the book tell him, and thus save the time of the teacher? No fear of any talented student being spoiled by a course of judicious drilling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Course of Quantitative Chemical Analysis: With Explanatory Notes and Stoichiometrical Problems It has been found expedient with large classes to allow the whole class to work simultaneously upon the same procedure (for example, that for the determination of chlorine in sodium chlo ride), since classroom instruction can then be made more effective. Each individual is, however, permitted to work as rapidly as his capacity admits; and to such students as exhibit unusual facility in manipulation extra analyses are assigned. Download or read book A Course of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis for Beginning Students written by George McPhail Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis for Beginning Students: With Explanatory Notes, Questions and Analytical Problems This book is intended for use with classes consisting of students who have completed a substantial year's work in Elementary Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis, and who are beginning the study of Quantitative Analysis. On the laboratory side its main object is to furnish the student with directions sufficiently detailed to enable him to do successful work with a minimum of personal oversight from the instructor. The instructor is thereby placed in a position, in the laboratory, as well as in the classroom, to exert his efforts more especially towards the development in his students of theoretical knowledge and the power to think. For the best results, the laboratory work should of course be accompanied by lectures and recitations; and, with the latter in mind, it has seemed desirable to include the questions of Part IV, and the stoichiometrical problems of Part V. The questions of Part IV are for the most part answered in the notes or elsewhere in the book; but it has been the writer's experience that beginners react more favorably to concrete questions assigned in advance for study, than to the same questions when put to them for the first time just after they are supposed to have mastered the details and principles of a specific analytical process. The problems of Part V are such as arc regularly met with in analytical work, and their conscientious study will give the student an insight into the principles of a wide variety of processes; the answers to the problems have been intentionally omitted. It has been the writer's practice to require, as a written exercise to be handed in at the beginning of a recitation, the solution of a definite number of problems each week throughout the course; these to be graded and returned at the end of the following recitation. Part I comprises a somewhat detailed discussion of those principles, both of theory and practice, which should be constantly kept in mind by the worker in analytical chemistry. Book Elementary Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis

Download or read book Elementary Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis written by Julius William Sturmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis: With Special Reference 1. The balance should rest on a perfect level, and should be adjusted so that the right and left arms exactly counterpoise. 2. A small wide-mouthed bottle, half filled with concentrated sulphuric acid (or recently ignited potassium carbonate) should be placed in the balance case, for the purpose of keeping the air in the case practically free from moisture. 3. Substances or vessels should never be weighed while hot. And to prevent the deposition of moisture on them, they should be cooled in dried air, - i. e., in a desiccator over sulphuric acid or calcium chloride. 4. Volatile substances, as well as very hygroscopic substances, should be weighed in closed containers. The method of weighing by difference should be employed. This consists simply in weighing a quantity of the substance in the container, removing a convenient quantity for analysis, and again weighing the container with the remainder of the substance. The difference between the two readings is the amount of substance taken. 5. The substance to be weighed should never be placed upon the bare balance pan; weighing glasses should always be used. 6. The substance to be weighed should always be placed upon the left balance pan, and the weights upon the right. 7. In transferring the container with the substance from the desiccator to the balance, forceps should be used, and not the fingers. Neither should weights ever be handled with the fingers. 8. The swinging of the balance beam should always be arrested before placing weights, or articles to be weighed, upon the balance pans, and before removing the same from the balance pans. 9. In weighing, the weights should be tried systematically, beginning with the large ones and working downward. 10. The doors of the balance case should not be allowed to remain open longer than necessary. The case must be closed when the final adjustment is made with the rider. When the pointer swings to an equal distance on either side of the central line (or zero-point), the balance is in equilibrium. 11. In reading weights, but two units should be used, - grammes and milligrammes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
