Download or read book Guidelines for the Safe Handling and Disposal of Chemicals Used in the Illlicit Manufacture of Drugs written by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Laboratory and Scientific Section and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Guidelines for the Safe Disposal of Chemicals used in the illicit manufacture of Drugs (STNAR/36) was published in 2006. At the 33rd meeting of the Heads of Law Enforcement Agencies (HONLEA) Asia and Pacific, in Bali, Indonesia in 2010, Member States noted the significant increase in precursor chemicals discovered regionally and expressed concern about the difficulties encountered in storing and disposing of precursor chemicals in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. The present Guidelines reflect the discussions of the experts at the Expert Group Meeting on Safe and Environmentally-Responsible Disposal of Chemicals Used in the Illicit Manufacture of Drugs held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 20 to 22 September 2010, and the elaboration of practical methods for the safe handling and disposal of seized chemicals in situations where a waste management infrastructure may not be available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazardous waste in the environment is one of the most difficult challenges facing our society. The purpose of this book is to provide a background of the many aspects of hazardous waste, from its sources to its consequences, focusing on the risks posed to human health and the environment. It explains the legislation and regulations surrounding hazardous waste; however, the scope of the book is much broader, discussing agents that are released into the environment that might not be classified as hazardous waste under the regulatory system, but nonetheless pose substantial hazards to human health and the environment. It provides a background of some of the major generators of hazardous wastes, explains the pathways by which humans and wildlife are exposed, and includes discussion of the adverse health effects linked to these pollutants. It provides numerous case studies of hazardous waste mismanagement that have led to disastrous consequences, and highlights the deficiencies in science and regulation that have allowed the public to be subjected to myriad potentially hazardous agents. Finally, it provides a discussion of measures that will need to be taken to control society's hazardous waste problem. This book was designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences, including students, professionals, and general readers interested in the topic. - Provides information about sources of and health risks posed by hazardous waste - Explains the legislation and regulations surrounding hazardous waste - Includes numerous case studies of mismanagement, highlights deficiencies in science and regulation and discusses measures to tackle society's hazardous waste problems

This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical production, use and disposal will continue to increase worldwide; assessments and forecasts predict that global chemical sales will grow by about 3 percent per year until 2050, the major part of which will take place in Asia. South-East Asian countries in particular have shown strong industrial growth in agriculture during the last two decades. Many countries in Southeast Asia lack the capacity to handle chemicals management issues and are in great need to develop institutions, legislation, knowledge and general awareness. The countries face many challenges in the area of chemicals management, in particular pesticide governance. The intensive and often insufficiently controlled use of pesticides in the large agriculture sector is a major part of the issue. The programme “Towards a Non-Toxic Environment in South-East Asia” was designed and funded by Sida and coordinated by KemI. It was implemented in association with the FAO RAP; PAN-AP and TFA, which aimed to reduce health and environmental risks by monitoring, regulating and managing agricultural, industrial and consumer chemicals around the . This evaluation assessed the role and contributions of FAO against the programme outcome-level results: (i) strengthened regulatory framework for the control and registration of pesticides; and (ii) adoption and economic benefits of the community-level Farmer Field School (FFS) activities in all partner countries within Phase II. In addition, the evaluation assessed FAO’s work on gender mainstreaming, communication and follow-up actions taken in response to the 2016 mid-term evaluation.
