Book excerpt: The children of Colombia’s drug lords face a rude awakening in a “supremely well-crafted” novel by one of “the best Latin American writers at work today” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). After twelve years away, Larry comes home to Colombia when his father, an old associate of Pablo Escobar, is murdered. Larry plans to collect his father’s remains and give him a proper burial . . . but his childhood friend Pedro has other plans. Picking him up at the airport, Pedro takes him directly to the Alborada celebration in Medellín—where Larry’s long-awaited homecoming takes an increasingly grim turn. The years of luxury living in bodyguard-surrounded mansions are over. Larry watches his family—including his ex-beauty queen mother and troubled brother—fall deeper into depression, drug addiction, and the traps of the family business. Now Larry must confront his family’s turbulent history while protecting himself from the dark remnants of a lost and struggling city. Unflinching and remarkably controlled, Jorge Franco’s Shooting Down Heaven is a stunning portrait of a generation wounded by their parents’ mistakes.

Download or read book The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Heaven According to The Devil written by Bedrettin Simsek and published by Bedrettin Şimşek. This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique example of literary archaeology by Bedrettin Simsek, which can only be compared to the Gospel of Judas. A different, ironic take on the world's oldest story, which tells us about the secret life of the devil in a satirical tone. A novel that recreates the stylized, unmistakable tone of the Gnostics, adorned with metaphors, presenting the richness of images in an economical language. Not only does it have deep meanings, but it can also be funny. The story of Adam and Eve has been told countless times by different authors. It was all like a repetition of what was said in the holy books. But this time the roles are changed, the role of Jesus is taken by the devil, who imitates his style, speaks just like him, performs miracles, but somehow cannot be crucified. Like Judas Iscariot, who wanted to regain his reputation in the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, the Devil, who is always accused but never allowed to defend himself, presents us with his own Bible in this work. He tells us the truth from his own perspective and shows the courage to go against God and say, "No, that's not what happened, this is what happened". In this way, while it becomes clear after centuries why God placed a prohibition and why this prohibition was violated, the devil himself answers the questions left unanswered by the holy books and the prophets. For those who miss true literature of intellectual value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed evidence from everything Jesus prophesied, often broken down to the root definitions of terms from the Greek and Aramaic/Hebrew languages which manuscripts were written in, to show in context by numerous Bible records, how and why those called, Ti (Tee) and Do (Doe) were the new incarnations of the One referred to as the Father and before then, Jehovah and Elohim, with the One who was incarnate in the vehicle (body) named Jesus, and before then Elijah, Moses, Enoch and Adam, who with Their Crew of Student "Saints," were on earth again to fulfill the promised return of Their Kingdom during these "End Times," through Their task recorded as the "Two Witnesses" in the Book of Revelations, that was completed when they exited their incarnations in March of 1997 - seen in the world's news as Heaven's Gate. Ti and Do left extensive records of everything they came to awaken to know over their combined 25 years incarnate. As I spent 19 fully dedicated years with them I drew upon their records and my experience to describe many new translations of terms and new interpretations of most all Book of Revelations records. Finally, I studied world history and current events that can be shown to be valid reference points in many prophecies. This includes many unusual events NASA has photographed in outer space as Jesus prophesied; a cityscape of Lights on dwarf planet Ceres, earth-like qualities to dwarf planet Pluto, hexagon shaped top on Saturn, spire like towers on the Moon, complicated objects that resemble Star Trek's star-ship enterprise in the sun's corona, comets that are comprised of several to seven objects flying in V formation, or having companion objects with them and parts of UFO and Luciferian space alien reports, holograms like Fatima and Spirits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is an amazing country. A place that needs time and complete immersion to be able to understand. I took a job as a tour leader, and instantly I was out of my depth. I experienced places and situations that I could never have been prepared for and all with a group of paying tourists who were looking to me for guidance. However, this was a steep learning curve covering language, culture, and history. It was not long before I saw that the people who had saved up for their holiday of a lifetime were far less prepared than I was. For over two and a half years, I visited many parts of China and also took groups to Vietnam, Nepal, Mongolia, and Russia. All this time sampling the culture and learning as much as I could about China and this part of Asia. I had some sticky situations and a lot of laughs with friends that I will keep forever. Would you let me be your tour leader?
Download or read book Understanding Walter Mosley written by Jennifer Larson and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of an award-winning author's extensive corpus written across a broad range of genres Walter Mosley is perhaps best known for his first published mystery, Devil in a Blue Dress, which became the basis for the 1995 movie of the same name featuring Denzel Washington. Mosley has since written more than forty books across an impressive expanse of genres including, but not limited to, nonfiction, science fiction, drama, and even young adult fiction, garnering him many honors including an O'Henry Award, an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, a Grammy Award, a Pen Center Lifetime Achievement Award, and two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Literary Work in Fiction. In Understanding Walter Mosley, Jennifer Larson considers Mosley's corpus as a whole to help readers more fully understand the evolution of his literary agenda. All Mosley's texts feature his trademark accessibility as well as his penchant for creating narratives that both entertain and instruct. Larson examines how Mosley's writing interrogates, complicates, and contextualizes recurring moral, social, and even personal questions. She also considers the possible roots of Mosley's enduring popularity with a diverse group of readers. Larson then traces key themes and claims throughout the Easy Rawlins series to show how Mosley's beloved hero offers unique perspectives on race, class, and masculinity in the mid- to late twentieth century; explores the ways in which Fearless Jones, Mosley's second detective, both builds on and diverges from his predecessor's character; and looks at how the works featuring Leonid McGill, Mosley's junior detective, center on understanding the complex relationship between present-day social dilemmas and the personal as well as the communal past. Regarding Mosley's other genres, Larson argues that the science fiction works together portray a future in which race, class, and gender are completely reimagined, yet still subject to an oppressive power dynamic, while his erotica asks readers to reconsider the dynamics of power and control but in a more personal, even intimate, context. Similarly, in Mosley's nongenre fiction, stories are revived through a reconnection with the past, a reclaiming of cultural heritage and lineage, and a rejection of classist visions of power. Finally, Mosley's nonfiction, which persuades his audience to act through writing, humanitarian efforts, or social uprising, offers a mix of lessons aimed at guiding readers through the same questions that inform his fiction writing.

Download or read book Start Shooting written by Charlie Newton and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The best way I can describe the Four Corners neighborhood of Chicago is find a length of rebar, scratch a big cross into the concrete, set your feet solid in the quadrant you like best, lean back, and start shooting.” Officer Bobby Vargas is hard-edged but idealistic, a Chicago cop who stands at the epicenter of a subterranean plot that will have horrific ramifications for both himself and the entire city. Twenty-five years earlier, a gruesome murder rocked the unforgiving streets of Four Corners. Now, suddenly, a dying Chicago paper is running a serial exposé on new evidence in that old case, threatening to implicate Bobby and his older brother, Ruben—a decorated, high-ranking detective and cop- prince of the streets. The smear campaign stirs up decades-old bad blood, leading the Vargas brothers down an increasingly twisted and terrifying path, where the sins of the past threaten to destroy what remains of the truth. As readers and critics discovered in his first novel, Calumet City, Charlie Newton’s Chicago is a landscape as brutal and poignant as any in modern crime fiction—a multi-faceted, shockingly violent labyrinth of gangland politics, political backstabbing, corporate malfeasance, and, possibly, hope. Start Shooting is a riveting read.
