Book High Temperature Shock Tube Ignition Studies of CO2 2 Diluted Mixtures

Download or read book High Temperature Shock Tube Ignition Studies of CO2 2 Diluted Mixtures written by Owen Marcus Pryor and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental data for ignition delay times and species time-histories (CH4) were obtained in mixtures diluted with CO2. Experiments were performed behind reflected shockwaves from temperatures of 1200 to 2000 K for pressures ranging from 1 to 11 atm. Ignition times were obtained from emission and laser absorption measurements. Current experimental data were compared with the predictions of detailed chemical kinetic models (available from literature) that will allow for accurate design and modeling of combustion systems.

Book Second Quarterly Progress Report

Download or read book Second Quarterly Progress Report written by G. B. Skinner and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to obtain fundamental understanding of combustion and extinguishment, initially for hydrogen-oxygen and hydrazine-nitrogen tetroxide. Chemical agents that extinguish the flame by inhibiting the combustion process are being considered. For the hydrogen-oxygen system, temperature and OH concentration profiles were obtained for flat hydrogen-oxygen-ethylene flames. Ethylene at concentrations below 4 per cent produced significant reductions in OH concentrations. These data will be correlated by calculations described below. Its effectiveness increases as the equivalence ratio increases from 1 (stoichiometric) to 6, but decreases in still richer flames. It has little inhibiting action at an equivalence ratio of 14, presumably because at the low temperature of this flame (800°K) the flames is self-inhibited by HO2 formation. Flame speed of three H2-air mixtures were measured at temperatures up to 500°C. Pyrolysis of CF3F4Br2 was carried out in the shock tube. Both decomposed to produce Br atoms, but C2F4Br2 more readily than CF3Br. This may account for the greater effectiveness of C2F4Br2 as flame inhibitor in H2-air mixtures. The IBM program for computing flame speeds and temperature and composition profiles in flames proved applicable, but time-consuming, for a simple model reaction, X[right arrow]Y. The solutions are being studied to look for short cuts, so that when used for the H2-air reaction, machine time will not be excessive. For the hydrazine-nitrogen tetroxide system, screening of inhibitors to prevent spontaneous ignition of hydrazine in N2O4 was completed. Of the total 55 candidates tested, thiophene and toluene were the most effective. However, each increased the hypergolic ignition limit from about 11% to 19% of NO2* in argon at 75°C, when 5% by volume of inhibitor was present. This is not a striking effect, and it seems unlikely that an inhibitor will be found which would prevent ignition of hydrazine in a pure N2O4-NO2 mixture. To gain further insight into the mechanism of hydrazine-NO*2 ignition, argon-diluted streams of the two gases are being rapidly mixed in a stirred reactor, and the final temperatures and product compositions are being studied. To the same end, high-speed schlieren photographs of a drop of hydrazine igniting in a NO2-argon atmosphere were taken. These show the nonflame reaction preceding the establishment of a diffusion flame.

Book Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems

Download or read book Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems written by Jürgen Wolfrum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of edited papers presented at the International Symposion Gas Phase Chemical Reaction Systems: Experiments and Models 100 Years After Max Bodenslein, held at the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg (IWH) in Heidelberg during July 25-28, 1995. The intention of this symposion was to bring together leading researchers from the fields of reaction dynamics, kinetics, catalysis and reactive flow model ling to discuss and review the advances in the understanding of chemical kinetics about 100 years after Max Bodenstein's pioneering work on the "hydrogen iodine reaction", which he carried out at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg. The idea to focus in his doctoral thesis [1] on this reaction was brought up by his supervisor Victor Meyer (successor of Robert Bunsen at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg) and originated from the non reproducible behaviour found by Bunsen and Roscoe in their early photochemical investigations of the H2/Cl2 system [2] and by van't Hoff [3], and V. Meyer and co-workers [4] in their experiments on the slow combustion of H2/02 mixtures.

Book Shock Tube Study of the Ignition and Combustion of Aluminum

Download or read book Shock Tube Study of the Ignition and Combustion of Aluminum written by J. F. Driscoll and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to obtain data that will help identify the reaction mechanism and the ignition limits of aluminum at elevated temperatures and pressures. Formidable problems arise when attempting such measurements in rocket motors since conditions are unsteady and not easy to control. Therefore, it was decided to mount a pure aluminum sample to the end wall of a shock tube and to ignite the sample using a reflected shock wave. The pressures and temperatures that can be achieved (40 atm, 5000 K) are typical of rocket motor conditions and are much higher than those obtained in previous studies using incident shock waves in conventional shock tubes. The aluminum sample reacts with a test gas in which the proportions of nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and chlorine are the same as found in ammonium perchlorate.
