Book Shock induced Transformation of Titanium nickel Alloys

Download or read book Shock induced Transformation of Titanium nickel Alloys written by N. L. Coleburn and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the behavior under shock wave compression of three compound alloys of titanium and nickel. Explosive-propelled metal plates transmitted pressures of up to 0.8 megabar in specimens with 50.3 atomic % Ni, 51.4 atomic % Ni, and 55.0 atomic % Ni. Shock wave and free-surface velocities were measured optically. The corresponding compression points were determined from the Rankine-Hugoniot equations. The data reveal that the dynamic compressibilities of Ti-Ni alloys are sensitive to temperature changes. At 90 kbars the microstructure of the near stoichiometric 50.3 atomic % Ni undergoes an almost complete martensitic transformation. The transformation is less evident in 51.4 atomic % Ni. The 55.0 atomic % Ni alloy is unchanged by the 90-kbar shock. At 270-280 kbars the shock velocity in stoichiometric Ti-Ni specimens, initially at 15C, becomes insensitive to pressure. The formation of a new phase is indicated. (Author).

Book Shock Induced Mechanical Response and Microstructure Evolution of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Shock Induced Mechanical Response and Microstructure Evolution of Titanium Alloys written by Yu Ren and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of titanium alloys in weaponry is increasingly widespread, due to their high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The weapons such as armors must be subjected to intense shock loads caused by explosion and hyper-velocity collision, etc., during service. Therefore, their service performance is closely related to the shock-induced response characteristics of materials, especially the microstructural evolution during the shock pulses and its effect on the mechanical properties. This chapter introduces the research progress on the shock response of some typical titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al, and Ti-3.5Al-10Mo-8V-1Fe. The effects of alloying composition (alloy type) and stress amplitude on the shock-induced mechanical response and microstructural evolution of titanium alloys are explored through soft recovery shock experiments, quasi-static reloading tests, as well as careful multi-scale microscopic analyses.

Book Fundamental Issues and Applications of Shock Wave and High Strain Rate Phenomena

Download or read book Fundamental Issues and Applications of Shock Wave and High Strain Rate Phenomena written by K.P. Staudhammer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-02-08 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of EXPLOMETTM 2000, International Conference on Fundamental Issues and Applications of Shock-Wave and High-Strain-Rate Phenomena, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2000; the fifth in the EXPLOMETTM quinquennial series which began in Albuquerque in 1980. The book is divided into five major sections with a total of 85 chapters. Section I deals with materials issues in shock and high strain rates while Section II covers shock consolidation, reactions, and synthesis. Materials aspects of ballistic and hypervelocity impact are covered in Section III followed by modeling and simulation in Section IV and a range of novel applications of shock and high-strain-rate phenomena in Section V. Like previous conference volumes published in 1980, 1985, and 1995, the current volume includes contributions from fourteen countries outside the United States. As a consequence, it is hoped that this book will serve as a global summary of current issues involving shock and high-strain-rate phenomena as well as a general reference and teaching componant for specializd curricula dealing with these features in a contemporary way. Over the past twenty years, the EXPLOMETTM Conferences have created a family of participants who not only converse every five years but who have developed long-standing interactions and professional relationships which continue to stimulate new concepts and applications particularly rooted in basic materials behavior.

Book Structure Property Relationships under Extreme Dynamic Environments

Download or read book Structure Property Relationships under Extreme Dynamic Environments written by Cyril Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inelastic response and residual mechanical properties acquired from most shock compressed solids are quite different from those acquired from quasi-static or moderate strain rates. For instance, the residual hardness of many shock compressed metals has been found to be considerably lower than those loaded under quasi-static conditions to the same maximum stress. However, the residual hardness of shock compressed metals is much higher than those loaded quasi-statically to the same total strain. These observations suggest that the deformation mechanisms active during inelastic deformation under shock compression and quasi-static or moderate rates may be quite different. Therefore, the primary objective of this short book is to offer the reader a concise introduction on the Structure-Property Relationships concerning shock compressed metals and metallic alloys via shock recovery experiments. The first phase of the book, chapters 1 through 3 provides a brief historical perspective on the structure-property relationships as it pertains to shock compression science, then plastic deformation in shock compressed metals and metallic alloys is described in terms of deformation slip, deformation twinning, and their consequences to spall failure. Existing knowledge gaps and limitations on shock recovery experiments are also discussed. The fundamentals of shock wave propagation in condensed media are presented through the formation and stability of shock waves, then how they are treated using the Rankine-Hugoniot jump relations derived from the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. The equation of states which govern the thermodynamic transition of a material from the unshock state to the shock state is briefly described and the elastic-plastic behavior of shock compressed solids is presented at the back end of the first phase of this book. The second phase of the book describes the geometry and design of shock recovery experiments using explosives, gas and powder guns. Then results derived from the residual mechanical properties, microstructure changes, and spall failure mechanisms in shock compressed metals and metallic alloys with FCC, BCC, and HCP crystal lattice structures are presented. Also, results on the residual microstructure of explosively compacted powders and powder mixtures are presented. Lastly, the book closes with the new frontiers in shock recovery experiments based on novel materials, novel microscopes, novel mechanical processing techniques, and novel time-resolved in-situ XRD shock experiments.

Book Finite Element Modelling of Shot Peening and Strengthening Mechanism Analysis

Download or read book Finite Element Modelling of Shot Peening and Strengthening Mechanism Analysis written by Cheng Wang and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The service performance and life of metal parts are closely related to the surface integrity of materials. Shot peening (SP) is a well-known surface strengthening technique and is widely used for the improvement of the component surface integrity in industrial fields, such as aerospace, vehicle, construction machinery and etc. With the rapid development of science and technology, numerous new SP techniques have been developed from the conventional mechanical shot peening, such as the laser shock peening (LSP), ultrasonic shot peening (USP),surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and etc. Different from the other mechanical processing techniques, a considerable number of process parameters have an influence on the surface strengthening effects of shot-peened metal parts. Therefore, the selection of the SP process parameters with respect to the different metal parts has always been a challenge. With the rapid development of the computer technology, the numerical simulation has increasingly attracted the more and more attentions both from the academy and the industry. Compared to the experimental investigations, the numerical simulations are not only timesaving and economical, but also can provide an insight into the surface strengthening mechanisms of SP.
