Book excerpt: Shock and Awe: Achieving Rapid Dominance. US Battle Tactics of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Written By Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade. Modern warfare. Iraq War. Shock and Awe (technically known as rapid dominance) is a military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming power, dominant battlefield awareness, dominant maneuvers, and spectacular displays of force to paralyze an adversary's perception of the battlefield and destroy its will to fight. The doctrine was written by Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade in 1996 and is a product of the National Defense University of the United States. Rapid dominance is defined by its authors, Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade, as attempting; "to affect the will, perception, and understanding of the adversary to fight or respond to our strategic policy ends through imposing a regime of Shock and Awe." Further, rapid dominance will; "impose this overwhelming level of Shock and Awe against an adversary on an immediate or sufficiently timely basis to paralyze its will to carry on . . . [to] seize control of the environment and paralyze or so overload an adversary's perceptions and understanding of events that the enemy would be incapable of resistance at the tactical and strategic levels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Shock and Awe—Achieving Rapid Dominance' by Harlan Ullman and James P. Wade is a thought-provoking exploration of alternative concepts for structuring mission capability packages (MCPs) that could help configure future U.S. military forces. Written at the turn of the 21st century, the authors argue that the winds of change are blowing as never before, driven by a radically altered geopolitical situation, an evolving information-oriented society, advancing technology, and budgetary constraints, and that our nation's ability to shape the future and defend against 21st century threats hinges on our response to these challenges. The book examines the idea of affecting the adversary's will, perception, and understanding through shock and awe, which is achieved by controlling the operational environment, affecting the adversary's will beyond the boundaries traditionally defined by military capability alone, and integrating far more broadly strategy, technology, and innovation. A must-read for anyone interested in learning more about U.S. military strategy and history.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing new in the notion of using force to affect an adversary’s will or in relying on ‘shock and awe’ to achieve the requisite objectives. What is new, an in the authors’ judgement, what is the fundamental challenge in this endeavour, is transforming the intent to influence will and perception into actual capability for creating shock and awe. This, in turn, means using these requirements of Rapid Dominance as the principal determinants for developing the military doctrine, tactics, capabilities and perception. That is the challenge this Whitehall Paper poses. -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: Examines the U.S. Marines’ visual culture of combat in the Iraq War. American military power in the War on Terror has increasingly depended on the capacity to see the enemy. The act of seeing—enhanced by electronic and digital technologies—has separated shooter from target, eliminating risk of bodily harm to the remote warrior, while YouTube videos eroticize pulling the trigger and video games blur the line between simulated play and fighting. Light It Up examines the visual culture of the early twenty-first century military. Focusing on the Marine Corps, which played a critical part in the invasion and occupation of Iraq, John Pettegrew argues that U.S. military force in the Iraq War was projected through an “optics of combat.” Powerful military technology developed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has placed war in a new posthuman era. Pettegrew’s interviews with marines, as well as his analysis of first-person shooter videogames and combat footage, lead to startling insights into the militarization of popular digital culture. An essential study for readers interested in modern warfare, policy makers, and historians of technology, war, and visual and military culture.

Book The Shock Doctrine

Download or read book The Shock Doctrine written by Naomi Klein and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of No Logo shows how the global "free market" has exploited crises and shock for three decades, from Chile to Iraq In her groundbreaking reporting, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement's peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world from Latin America and Eastern Europe to South Africa, Russia, and Iraq. At the core of disaster capitalism is the use of cataclysmic events to advance radical privatization combined with the privatization of the disaster response itself. Klein argues that by capitalizing on crises, created by nature or war, the disaster capitalism complex now exists as a booming new economy, and is the violent culmination of a radical economic project that has been incubating for fifty years.

Book Shock And Awe An Operational Art Critique

Download or read book Shock And Awe An Operational Art Critique written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great technological leaps in communications, information technology and precision munitions have spawned a "Revolution in Military Affairs" that seeks to leverage the information age to produce a new paradigm of warfare. One product of this revolution is the concept of "Shock and Awe", which advocates achieving rapid dominance of an adversary by the application of military force of such magnitude, precision and swiftness that it stuns the enemy, breaks the will to resist and makes further resistance appear futile. In theory, "Shock and Awe" will force a quick capitulation by the enemy with forces that may even be smaller in number than the enemy's forces. An operational art critique of "Shock and Awe" reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the concept. It identifies its roots in the coercive air power theories of Boyd and Warden, details the significant burden intelligence carries in conducting a "Shock and Awe" operation, notes the impact the "fog" and "friction" of war could produce and outlines the inherent difficulties of targeting the enemy's will as a center of gravity. "Shock and Awe" is a concept worthy of consideration by combatant and joint task force commanders, but must not become a sole strategy for winning a major conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1991 and 1993, the Army formulated a fighting doctrine recast to fit the power demands of a new strategic world. This monograph addresses several questions revolving around the rapid replacement, less than 2 years after its success in the desert war, of a recognized and successful fighting doctrine. Discusses the roots of U.S. Army doctrine and the antecedent developments leading to the Army's recasting of its key battle doctrine. Examines the mechanism of the process of change, the effects of the new doctrine and how it was implemented.
