Book excerpt: Robotic animals are nowadays developed for various types of research, such as bio-inspired robotics, biomimetics and animal behavior studies. More specifically, in the case of collective animal behavior research, the robotic device can interact with animals by generating and exploiting signals relevant for social behavior. Once perceived by the animal society as conspecific, these robots can become powerful tools to study the animal behaviors, as they can at the same time monitor the changes in behavior and influence the collective choices of the animal society. In this book, we present novel robotized tools that can integrate shoals of fish in order to study their collective behaviors. We used the current state of the art on the zebrafish social behavior to define the specifications of the robots, and we performed stimuli analysis to improve their developments. Bio-inspired controllers were designed based on data extracted from experiments with zebrafish for the robots to mimic the zebrafish locomotion underwater. Experiments involving mixed groups of fish and robots qualified the robotic system to be integrated among a zebrafish shoal and to be able to influence the collective decisions of the fish. These results are very promising for the field of animal-robot interaction studies, as we showed the effect of the robots in long-duration experiments and repetitively, with the same order of response from the animals.

Yet, despite many studies on the subject, the decision-making mechanisms of these collective events remain poorly understood.In this thesis, we want to better understand collective movement by studying more precisely the decision-making process, the organisation and the cohesion of groups of social fish. Our study focuses on the zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model used in different areas of research. To highlight those behaviours, we have developed a specific constrained environment composed of two rooms connected by a corridor. Cohesion on groups of different sizes and the organisation of leadership have been examined. The collective behaviour of zebrafish in a constrained environment was then described throughout a multi-contextual stochastic model. We have also developed a robotic agent to determine the importance of aspect and behaviour in conspecific recognition. Finally, after its integration into the group, we influenced the movements of the fish group with this biomimetic and autonomous fish robot to test our hypotheses on the different rules underlying collective movements.We have achieved the following results. In a constrained environment, fish use the rooms as resting areas and frequently move from one area to another. We observed that the size of fish groups influences the structure and proportion of these transitions. Group size also changes the cohesion between individuals and their spatial distribution. We studied more precisely the decision-making process during transitions, and in particular the mechanics of leadership. We have shown that leadership is shared among all individuals in a group, with heterogeneous sharing modalities between the different groups studied. The stochastic model developed from these results correctly simulates fish group behaviour in a constrained environment, using different parameter values according to the position of the agent. We have succeeded in integrating an autonomous and biomimetic fish robot into a group of zebrafish. The use of the stochastic model to drive the robot has highlighted the importance of biomimetic behaviour in the process of recognising a conspecific. Finally, we modulated the behaviour of the zebrafish with the fish robot by inducing collective departures as well as significantly biasing the distribution of fish between the two rooms. These positive results allow us to validate the hypotheses about leadership and cohesion among social fish.

Book excerpt: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured ÒcoolieÓ laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West IndiesÑwhere Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worshipÑand ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as ÒAfricanÓ and ÒIndianÓ despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, HosayÕs mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now. In a nuanced study of these two practices, Aisha Khan sheds light on power dynamics through religious and racial identities formed in the context of colonialism in the Atlantic world, and shows how today these identities reiterate inequalities as well as reinforce demands for justice and recognition.
