Book Theoretical and Experimental Study of Wave Enhancement and Runup on Uniformaly Sloping Impermeable Beaches

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Study of Wave Enhancement and Runup on Uniformaly Sloping Impermeable Beaches written by Wm G. Van Dorn and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shoaling enhancement of small-amplitude, dispersive wave trains traveling over uniform, impermeable slopes was observed in a specially-constructed wave channel, where the reproducible wave elevation measurement accuracy was about .0005-in. These observations substantially support the enhancement predicted from linear theory (conservation of energy flux) except in very shallow water and on very steep slopes, where accelerative effects become important. On the hypothesis that small-amplitude runup theory might be similarly valid for periodic waves of finite height, provided that the positive incident wave amplitude is replaced by the local crest height above still water, this theory was modified to include the effect of the superelevation under a wave crest due to profile asymmetry. The modified theory is shown to agree acceptably with runup observations of larger waves previously reported-both for breaking and non-breaking waves. Because solutions to the modified theory cannot conveniently be obtained by manual calculation, a nomograph chart is included, from which runup predictions can be easily made, given only the wave height, period, and water depth a wave-length or so from shore, and the beach slope. Use of this nomograph for non-uniform slopes, oblique incidence, and non-periodic waves is also discussed. (Author).

Download or read book Large Scale Disasters written by Mohamed Gad-el-Hak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Extreme' events - including climatic events, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, drought - can cause massive disruption to society, including large death tolls and property damage in the billions of dollars. Events in recent years have shown the importance of being prepared and that countries need to work together to help alleviate the resulting pain and suffering. This volume presents an integrated review of the broad research field of large-scale disasters. It establishes a common framework for predicting, controlling and managing both manmade and natural disasters. There is a particular focus on events caused by weather and climate change. Other topics include air pollution, tsunamis, disaster modeling, the use of remote sensing and the logistics of disaster management. It will appeal to scientists, engineers, first responders and health-care professionals, in addition to graduate students and researchers who have an interest in the prediction, prevention or mitigation of large-scale disasters.

Book Calculation of a Solitary Wave Shoaling on a Shallow Slope

Download or read book Calculation of a Solitary Wave Shoaling on a Shallow Slope written by A. R. Kriebel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical method developed by Wallace and Wonderley for calculating the deformation of a solitary wave moving onto a steep seawall was extended to beach slopes as small as 9 deg. The calculated results show that the existing dipole flow model does not adequately represent the wave deformation for beach slopes this small. Fundamental changes in the mathematical model appear to be required for the same accuracy with which the dipole model represents undeformed solitary waves. (Author).
