Book Pirate Modernity

Download or read book Pirate Modernity written by Ravi Sundaram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Delhi’s contemporary history as a site for reflection, Pirate Modernity moves from a detailed discussion of the technocratic design of the city by US planners in the 1950s, to the massive expansions after 1977, culminating in the urban crisis of the 1990s. As a practice, pirate modernity is an illicit form of urban globalization. Poorer urban populations increasingly inhabit non-legal spheres: unauthorized neighborhoods, squatter camps and bypass legal technological infrastructures (media, electricity). This pirate culture produces a significant enabling resource for subaltern populations unable to enter the legal city. Equally, this is an unstable world, bringing subaltern populations into the harsh glare of permanent technological visibility, and attacks by urban elites, courts and visceral media industries. The book examines contemporary Delhi from some of these sites: the unmaking of the citys modernist planning design, new technological urban networks that bypass states and corporations, and the tragic experience of the road accident terrifyingly enhanced by technological culture. Pirate Modernity moves between past and present, along with debates in Asia, Africa and Latin America on urbanism, media culture, and everyday life. This pioneering book suggests cities have to be revisited afresh after proliferating media culture. Pirate Modernity boldly draws from urban and cultural theory to open a new agenda for a world after media urbanism.

Download or read book Shakti and shakta written by Arthur Avalon and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no word of wider content in any language than this Sanskrit term meaning 'Power'. For Shakti in the highest causal sense is God as Mother, and in another sense it is the universe which issues from Her Womb. And what is there which is neither one nor the other? Therefore, the Yoginihridaya Tantra thus salutes Her who conceives, bears, produces and thereafter nourishes all worlds: "Obeisance be to Her who is pure Being-Consciousness-Bliss, as Power, who exists in the form of Time and Space and all that is therein, and who is the radiant Illuminatrix in all beings." It is therefore possible only to outline here in a very general way a few of the more important principles of the Shakti-doctrine, omitting its deeply interesting practice (Sadhana) in its forms as ritual worship and Yoga. Today Western science speaks of Energy as the physical ultimate of all forms of Matter. So has it been for ages to the Shaktas, as the worshippers of Shakti are called. But they add that such Energy is only a limited manifestation (as Mind and Matter) of the almighty infinite Supreme Power (Maha-Shakti) of Becoming in 'That' (Tat), which is unitary Being (Sat) itself.

Great Indeed Is The Value, Which Is Placed On The Procedure Of Analytic Dismemberment. While The Method Has Certainly Been Result Producing, Materially, In Its Wake It Has Brought Immense Suffering- Both Physical And Spiritual. The Price Paid For A Lopsided Advance Is Thirty Major Wars With Their Toll Of One Hundred And Thirty Million Lives, And The Irreparable Destruction Of The Natural Environment. The Time Cries For A Reappraisal Of The Basic Paradigms Of Human Existence, But The Hegemony Of Well-Entrenched Vested Interests Material Or Intellectual Would Seem To Preclude This. The Advanced Among The Mankind Of The Day Become Suicidally Specialized. For, If The Mechanical Model Of Thought Has Been Of Advantage In Man S Preceding Unfolding, The Same, What May Be Called The Survival Paradigm,, Now Creates Dangerous Dualities, Binary Oppositions (You-Me, Body-Mind, East-West, Etc.) . The Model Has Outlived Its Usefulness Merely Enforcing Dormancy On A Major Part Of The Human Brain. It Behoves Mankind To Choose Wisely Right Now Since Parallel To The Socio-Economic, Scientific And Technological Revolutions There Has Got To Be The Overdue Radical Psychic Transformation. The First Step Towards Clearing The Fateful Crisis Would Therefore Be To Be Aware, And End The Hold Of The Linear, Causal, Mechanical Thought Orientation Over The Intellectual Culture Of The Times. It narrates many a phenomenon of Yoga with actual experiences and their explanation, including those of the mysterious Kundalini. It is a must read for all interested in the mysteries of Yoga and Kundalini which the Siddha Yogis rarely reveal to all. The author Vibhakar Lele is from the tradition of Siddha Yogis from the Natha sect from Saint Dnyaneshwar who has revealed many secrets of Yoga with experiences on the Path. His book is deemed to be useful also to the Shaktipata and other Kriya-yoga followers and also those who lack adequate guidance form their Gurus/peers. It also gives an understanding of the riddle of the Universe and Life which stands alternatively explained in most cogent terms by the Yogis and Indian philosophers, in their own way. Just please have a look inside the book and decide for yourself. It is deemed to be a book worth keeping and preserving for a lifetime to be passed down the generations for real wisdom of Who We Are and How We achieve the Kingdom that belongs to us, the Nirvana, the Moksha, or whatever one prefers to call it, the Heavens, the Godhood et al. Those who are curious about Yogic experiences will most likely have their curiosity satisfied. Others who are having such experiences themselves may, no doubt, be happy to find clues and explanation to their mysterious experiences. the author would be happy if it be so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book throws new light on the gradual development of the concept of Rudra-Siva in his animal, phallic and human forms, since the days of the Harappa Civilization. It examines how Siva, the composite Aryan-non-Aryan Divinity, was not only admitted but was ultimately crowned with an exalted position in the Brahmanical pantheon; how the bull once identified with the deity, was regulated to the position of a vahana; how phallism was related to Saivism and also how Siva, in his different forms, was represented in early Indian Art and the Art of Further India. The wide range and depth of the author's research fills a vital gap in the subject and his treatment of the entire subject is unique. This methodical study on Siva also contains an exhaustive bibliography.

Book India Beyond India Dilemmas of Belonging

Download or read book India Beyond India Dilemmas of Belonging written by Elfriede Hermann and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People’s transnational mobilities, their activities to build homes in their countries of residence and their connectivities have resulted in multiplicities of belonging to encountered, imagined and represented communities operating within various political contexts. Migrants and their descendants labor to form and transform relations with their country of origin and of residence. People who see their origins in India but are now living elsewhere are a case in point. They have been establishing worldwide home places, whose growing number and vibrancy invite reconsideration of Indian diasporic communities and contexts in terms of ‘India(s) beyond India.’ Issues of belonging in Indian diasporas include questions of membership not only in the nation of previous and present residence and/or the nation of origin, but also in other communities and networks in political, economic, religious and social realms at local, regional or global levels. Yet, belonging – and especially simultaneous belonging – to various formations is rarely unambiguous. Rather, belonging in all its modes may entail dilemmas that arise from inclusions and exclusions. Bearing in mind such processes, the contributions to this volume endeavor to provide answers to the question of what kinds of difficulties members of Indian communities abroad encounter in connection with their identifications with and participation in specific collectivities. The underlying argument of all the essays collected is that members of Indian diasporas develop strategies to cope with the dilemmas they face in connection with their sense of belonging to particular communities, while they are subjected to specific power relationships. Thus, the volume sheds light on the ways in which dilemmas of belonging are being negotiated in intercultural fields.
