Book excerpt: Glebe, an unlikely hero, scores big for the little guy as Glebe tweets his way to becoming the voice of the people in a witty tale so unlikely, that it is totally plausible, definitely relevant, and very funny. A quirky, ex-adman, Glebe teams up with Hartwick, a black homeless gent, to create the consumer revolution that topples once powerful businesses. He just asked people 'if you could change one thing, what would that be?' and tweeted his way to changing the world. And his target included everything from dumb advertising, to incessant telephone calls, the economy, the government and everything else that people were once powerless to impact. Glebe did what you would have done if you had thought of it and were quirky and passionate and wanted to just make a diff.

Book Shit That We Should Never Pass Along and All That We Can Not Leave Behind

Download or read book Shit That We Should Never Pass Along and All That We Can Not Leave Behind written by M.J. Boin De and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 1980s rural Kansas, Mara finds herself taking on more than she can chew. Mara’s mother is a woman arguably ahead of her own time when it comes to the investigative day job she holds, and her own progressive take and unwanted oversharing of her thoughts on the day’s larger social justice issues. Mara’s story allows the reader to start their journey following her mother’s divorce from Mara’s abusive stepfather, and make the move with Mara, her two youngest sisters, and her mother from city life to the rural awakenings that seem to only exacerbate her mother’s own baby boomer inclination towards double standards. Sprinkle in three know-it-all rural town biddies to ensure that The Greatest Generation has their say, and it’s no wonder Xer children are now all referred to as “survivors.” Mara is determined to show her mother, and an entire town of rural Kansans, that the only parties in need of a clue are they themselves. As long as Mara remains convinced that she will win in the battle of wills against her seasoned mother, absolutely nothing at all will go sidewise in this book for any of the characters. An authentic throwdown between the baby boomer and Xer generations, delving into everything from childhood abuse, racism, abortion, religion, higher education, and ensuring those familial elitists who we all believe we know (and either love or hate) are well set for the next generation of epic failure and loss. Sure to infuriate all comers, keep everyone laughing and crying in equal measures. Mara and her mother prove that simply being human, and a product of one’s own generational time, cultural norms, and familial expectations is more than sufficient to ensure offensiveness for generations to come. The challenge lies in learning to love and find the best in each other during times when the last thing in the world any of us wants to do is love or find the best in each other. This book comes with every trigger warning known to mankind. If you are a survivor of childhood sexual or physical abuse and trauma, post-abortion trauma, or racial-related childhood or adult traumas, the author of this book cautions the reader. This book is intended for mature audiences over the age of twenty-five. Parents are not advised to purchase this book for young teenage readers.

Book Cacaphonies

  • Author : Annabel L. Kim
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2022-04-05
  • ISBN : 1452965404
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book Cacaphonies written by Annabel L. Kim and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring why there is so much fecal matter in literary works that matter Cacaphonies takes fecal matter and its place in literature seriously. Readers and critics have too long overlooked excrement’s vital role in the twentieth- and twenty-first-century French canon. In a stark challenge to the tendency to view this literature through sanitizing abstractions, Annabel L. Kim undertakes close readings of key authors to argue for feces as a figure of radical equality, both a literary object and a reflection on literature itself, without which literary studies is impoverished and sterile. Following the fecal through line in works by Céline, Beckett, Genet, Sartre, Duras, and Gary and the contemporary authors Anne Garréta and Daniel Pennac, Kim shows that shit, far from vanishing from the canon after the early modern period, remains present in the modern and contemporary French literature that follows. She argues that all the shit in the canon expresses a call to democratize literature, making literature for all, just as shit is for (or of) all. She attends to its presence in this prized element of French identity, treating it as a continually uttered desire to manifest the universality France aspires to—as encapsulated by the slogan Liberté, égalité, fraternité—but fails to realize. In shit there is a concrete universalism that traverses bodies with disregard for embodied differences. Cacaphonies reminds us that literature, and the ideas to be found therein, cannot be separated from the corporeal envelopes that create and receive them. In so doing, it reveals the aesthetic, political, and ethical potential of shit and its capacity to transform literature and life.

Book excerpt: NFL Brawler is a raucous first-person account of an NFL under siege by the game’s first player-turned-agent, Ralph Cindrich, the original “Blind Side” agent whose entertaining pro football memoir takes readers behind the scenes of the game’s most important and outrageous drafts, deals, and trades; takes on NFL scandals by tellin’ it like it is; and takes readers closer to the real action of the sport—from locker rooms to boardrooms, and into the worlds of agents and players—than any book to date. Chronicling more than thirty years in the professional football business—on the field and in the locker room; in high-stakes negotiations with coaches, GMs, and owners; and inside agents’ and players’ personal lives—Cindrich, twice named by The Sporting News as one of the 100 most powerful people in sports, writes about a who’s who of professional football: NFL coaches like Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka, Sid Gillman, and Bill Belichick; NFL owners like Art Rooney and Al Davis to Jerry Jones and others; other sports agents; and the NFL talking heads from John Madden to Keyshawn Johnson. While taking certain aspects of his beloved sport to task, Cindrich’s memoir is entertaining—blowing out of the water Jerry Maguire, Arli$$, and other portrayals of an agent’s life.

Book Our Chemical Hearts

Download or read book Our Chemical Hearts written by Krystal Sutherland and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Green meets Rainbow Rowell in this irresistible story of first love, broken hearts, and the golden seams that put them back together again. Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can't-eat-can't-sleep kind of love that he's been hoping for just hasn't been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he's been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything's about to change. Grace isn't who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys' clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It's obvious there's something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. And yet, this isn't your average story of boy meets girl. Krystal Sutherland's brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love.
