Book Wrecks on Welsh Beaches

Download or read book Wrecks on Welsh Beaches written by TOM Bennett and published by TOM Bennett . This book was released on with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Low Tide, especially after winter storms, historic shipwrecks are to be seen on many UK beaches. All can be visited on foot, most seen without getting your feet wet. This book describes the stories and details of some 35 that can be seen around the Welsh coast. Two of them have not been positively identified, but the author, using his expertise as a wreck detective has suggested a name for the shipwreck. All these shipwrecks are part of our cultural heritage. Please respect them as historical monuments to our bygone maritime heritage. They are like museum pieces that can be visited freely for us to ponder and learn from. Some of these wrecks have lain in the sand for more than 200 years and if respected now, should still be there in another 200 years.

Stretching 1400km (870 miles) from Chester to Chepstow, including Anglesey, the waymarked trail takes 2-3 months to complete but can easily be broken into shorter sections. The walking is generally not difficult, although there are occasional rugged sections, steep ascents and descents and more remote stretches with fewer facilities. Promising fantastic scenery and a unique insight into local history and culture, what better way to experience the diversity and beauty of Wales' captivating coastline? The route is presented in 57 stages, ranging from 16 to 32km, each featuring clear route description illustrated with 1:100,000 mapping, overview statistics and notes on the availability of accommodation, facilities and public transport links. You'll find plenty of helpful advice for planning your walk, plus background information on Welsh history, geology, plants, wildlife and local points of interest. A facilities table, Welsh glossary and useful contacts can be found in the appendices. Passing through the Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks, as well as numerous AONBs and sections of Heritage Coast, the Wales Coast Path takes in seaside resorts, attractive fishing villages, sandy beaches, rocky coves and striking cliff coastline. Highlights include the picturesque Llyn and Gower peninsulas, 13th-century 'Iron Ring' castles and frequent opportunities for wildlife spotting. The route can be linked with Offa's Dyke Path National Trail (covered in a separate Cicerone guide) to complete a full circuit of Wales.

Book Ships and Shipwrecks of the Early Stuart Dynasty

Download or read book Ships and Shipwrecks of the Early Stuart Dynasty written by James D. Taylor Jr. and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book encompasses in a single volume data including lists of ships and ship types in the service of King James I and Charles I, as well as the East India Company. The bare facts are enlivened by logs and narratives from shipwreck survivors relating the perils of seeking the Northwest Passage or sailing to India. The author has found that many facts have been distorted on informative websites as a result of incomplete and embellished information. This book attempts to correct those errors. For each of the wrecks contained in this book, Mr. Taylor has attempted, if the wording of the documents is ambiguous, to determine the fate of these ships based on only the facts as they were recorded at the time. If in doubt, he would explain his reasoning. In his efforts to collect and share all sailing and wreck-related data in this volume, Mr. Taylor has reviewed hundreds of electronic and hard-copy manuscript archival collections and travelled to view rare and wonderful, sometimes hand-illuminated, manuscripts that have not been digitized. However, as much as he would like to believe he has uncovered everything, it is easy to imagine that more details could come to light at some time. Treasure has different meanings to different people. Some of these wrecks contain Spanish reales (“pieces of 8”), jewels, gold and silver bars that could not be recovered at the time and have since been forgotten. Written records of such events were reviewed by fewer people over the centuries and ended up buried in dark archives, until now. But some of us define treasure as knowledge, ensuring that facts are presented correctly to future generations. This is the goal Mr. Taylor strives for in these volumes.
