Book Shipping Strategy

Download or read book Shipping Strategy written by Peter Lorange and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shipping industry has an impact on each and every one of us every day. Ships transport the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the materials used to build our homes, and the fuel that heats them. Yet traditional shipping companies - ones that combine various aspects of shipping under one organizational roof - are on the decline. They are gradually being replaced by new, more specialized companies with more strategic clarity and managerial focus. In Shipping Strategy Peter Lorange draws on his extensive experience in the shipping industry to show how companies can adapt to the fast-moving and volatile world of maritime business by devising strategies for future success, including specialization and innovation.

Book Shipping and Globalization in the Post War Era

Download or read book Shipping and Globalization in the Post War Era written by Niels P. Petersson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book belongs to the Maritime Business and Economic History strand of the Palgrave Studies in Maritime Economics book series. This volume highlights the contribution of the shipping industry to the transformations in business and society of the postwar era. Shipping was both an example and an engine of globalization and structural change. In turn, the industry experienced and pioneered, mirrored and enabled key developments that led to the present-day globalized economy. Contributions address issues such as the macro-level shift of shipping’s centre of gravity from Europe to Asia, the political and legal frameworks within which it developed, the strategies and performance of both successful and unsuccessful firms, and the links between the shipping industry and the wider economy and society. Without shipping and its ability to forge connections and networks of a global reach, the modern world would look very different. By bringing together scholars from various disciplinary and national backgrounds, this book advances our understanding of the linkages that bind economies and societies together.

Book Identifying business opportunities for shipping entrepreneurs A sequence of strategic and operational considerations

Download or read book Identifying business opportunities for shipping entrepreneurs A sequence of strategic and operational considerations written by Hans-Christian Stockfisch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 2,0, Hamburg School of Business Administration gGmbH (Maritime and Logistics - HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration), course: MBA Shipping, language: English, abstract: This thesis develops a methodology that gives guidance through the process of identifying a business opportunity in shipping by spotting an emerging niche in the market and setting up a corresponding business model to establish a promising company. The focus lies on shipping entrepreneurs, who are entirely dependent on investment capital and therefore have to be well prepared to attract investors. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is introductory, defines the basic terminology and sets assumptions for the further analysis. Chapter Two explores the signals, indicating emerging niches in the market, covering the first part of identifying a business opportunity. Chapter Three and Four cover the second part of the identification process, discussing considerations regarding the strategic framework as well as the operational management of the startup. Conclusions are drawn in chapter Five. The key findings are that the financial and corporate structure of the business model is mutually dependent. Therefore a holistic approach of the venture must be taken into account to successfully identify and approach a business opportunity. Furthermore it is found that the entrepreneurs have to integrate a prudent risk management to attract investors and to prepare the company for present and future challenges. This should be complemented by a proactive and transparent style of management. However, there is no unique all-in-one solution for the establishment of a new company as every business case is different and must be conducted individually. Nevertheless the tools and considerations presented in this thesis offer practical guidance and lower risks and uncertainties in the decision-making processes of the shipping-entrepreneurs.

Download or read book Your Strategy Needs a Strategy written by Martin Reeves and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You think you have a winning strategy. But do you? Executives are bombarded with bestselling ideas and best practices for achieving competitive advantage, but many of these ideas and practices contradict each other. Should you aim to be big or fast? Should you create a blue ocean, be adaptive, play to win—or forget about a sustainable competitive advantage altogether? In a business environment that is changing faster and becoming more uncertain and complex almost by the day, it’s never been more important—or more difficult—to choose the right approach to strategy. In this book, The Boston Consulting Group’s Martin Reeves, Knut Haanæs, and Janmejaya Sinha offer a proven method to determine the strategy approach that is best for your company. They start by helping you assess your business environment—how unpredictable it is, how much power you have to change it, and how harsh it is—a critical component of getting strategy right. They show how existing strategy approaches sort into five categories—Be Big, Be Fast, Be First, Be the Orchestrator, or simply Be Viable—depending on the extent of predictability, malleability, and harshness. In-depth explanations of each of these approaches will provide critical insight to help you match your approach to strategy to your environment, determine when and how to execute each one, and avoid a potentially fatal mismatch. Addressing your most pressing strategic challenges, you’ll be able to answer questions such as: • What replaces planning when the annual cycle is obsolete? • When can we—and when should we—shape the game to our advantage? • How do we simultaneously implement different strategic approaches for different business units? • How do we manage the inherent contradictions in formulating and executing different strategies across multiple businesses and geographies? Until now, no book brings it all together and offers a practical tool for understanding which strategic approach to apply. Get started today.

Book Surviving Supply Chain Integration

Download or read book Surviving Supply Chain Integration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The managed flow of goods and information from raw material to final sale also known as a "supply chain" affects everythingâ€"from the U.S. gross domestic product to where you can buy your jeans. The nature of a company's supply chain has a significant effect on its success or failureâ€"as in the success of Dell Computer's make-to-order system and the failure of General Motor's vertical integration during the 1998 United Auto Workers strike. Supply Chain Integration looks at this crucial component of business at a time when product design, manufacture, and delivery are changing radically and globally. This book explores the benefits of continuously improving the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, and its customers to ensure the highest added value. This book identifies the state-of-the-art developments that contribute to the success of vertical tiers of suppliers and relates these developments to the capabilities that small and medium-sized manufacturers must have to be viable participants in this system. Strategies for attaining these capabilities through manufacturing extension centers and other technical assistance providers at the national, state, and local level are suggested. This book identifies action steps for small and medium-sized manufacturersâ€"the "seed corn" of business start-up and developmentâ€"to improve supply chain management. The book examines supply chain models from consultant firms, universities, manufacturers, and associations. Topics include the roles of suppliers and other supply chain participants, the rise of outsourcing, the importance of information management, the natural tension between buyer and seller, sources of assistance to small and medium-sized firms, and a host of other issues. Supply Chain Integration will be of interest to industry policymakers, economists, researchers, business leaders, and forward-thinking executives.
