Download or read book Shielding the Poor written by Nora Claudia Lustig and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Inter-American Development Bank publication The poor in developing countries are particularly vulnerable to adverse shocks. They have little or no access to public social insurance, are unlikely to save in adequate amounts to rely fully on self-insurance or informal insurance, face restricted access to private market insurance or credit mechanisms, and have little or no political voice to demand the protection of safety net programs. In this book, the authors analyze the best ways to help the poor manage risks such as health shocks, unemployment, sudden drops in income, and old age. Unemployment benefits, employment programs, means-tested social assistance, social investment funds, and micro-finance for consumption-smoothing purposes are the leading options considered. The book provides a careful assessment of issues that governments need to address in the process of designing appropriate safety nets.
Download or read book Consumer Protection in Financial Services written by Southern Methodist University. Institute of International Banking and Finance and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of how financial services should be regulated in the interests of consumers has never been more topical. The structure of the financial services industry is changing rapidly and the need for the law to keep pace with these changes has never been greater. This book examines the role of the law in the protection of the consumer, in particular the ways in which the law is, and could be, used to protect consumers when purchasing financial services. A prominent panel of contributors first examines the role of the European Union and the ombudsmen schemes operating in the United Kingdom in improving consumer protection. Eight expert papers present a detailed analysis of aspects of the various legal mechanisms protecting consumers in the banking, financial services, investments and insurance industries. The final part of the book is concerned with the important and controversial area of consumer credit. This unique work is a welcome contribution to a rapidly developing area of law, which has so far received little attention from commentators. It will be of great interest to those at the cutting edge of banking, financial services and consumer law, whether practicing lawyers or in-house counsel, and all those involved in advising consumers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As globalization continues apace, market segmentations are diminishing, distance is shrinking and the boundaries between nation states are becoming increasingly blurred. National economies are closely interlinked through manychannels and we rarely view things from a single country’s view, adopting a global perspective instead. It is therefore imperative to understand how the world economy functions. This book utilizes up to date empirical evidence to illuminate the mechanics of the world as a single entity. The author explores the properties of the world economy, the diverse mechanisms of interdependence, shocks and disturbances, economic processes and structures, and the institutional arrangements that guide these processes. Key topics covered include: world GDP, growth and global product and factor markets China as a new global player the roots and impact of financial and currency crises the performance of the developing countries over time (which have gained, which have lost?) conflicts between the national interest and global concerns (protectionism, locational competition for mobile factors of production, environmental issues) the institutional arrangements for the world economy (IMF, WTO). The World Economy: A Global Analysis will be essential reading for students studying the world economy from the perspective of economics, finance, business and politics.

Book excerpt: As globalization continues apace, lines of communications are shortening and the boundaries between nations are becoming increasingly blurred. A global perspective is adopted on an increasing range of issues and this is particularly true of economics - no single nation can truly exist in isolation. The second edition of Horst Siebert's The World Economy treats the world as a single entity, considering issues of a global economy, rather than approaching international economics from the viewpoint of any one country. The key issues that have a affected the world trade system since the turn of the millennium are very much to the fore.

Download or read book Bank Risk Management in Developing Economies written by Leonard Onyiriuba and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bank Risk Management in Developing Economies: Addressing the Unique Challenges of Domestic Banks provides an up-to-date resource on how domestically-based banks in emerging economies can provide financial services for all economic sectors while also contributing to national economic development policies. Because these types of bank are often exposed to risky sectors, they are usually set apart from foreign subsidiaries, and thus need risk models that foreign-based banks do not address. This book is the first to identify these needs, proposing solutions through the use of case studies and analyses that illustrate how developing economic banking crises are often rooted in managing composite risks. The book represents a departure from classical literature that focuses on assets, liabilities, and balance sheet management, by which developing economy banks, like their counterparts elsewhere, have not fared well. - Contains fifty cases that reinforce risk management best practices - Provides a consistent chapter format that includes abstract, keywords, learning focus, and outcomes - Summaries, questions, and glossaries conclude each chapter

Download or read book Recommendations of the Committee for Waterfront Structures Harbours and Waterways written by HTG and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recommendations have been completely restructured in this 12th (2020) edition of the EAU (10th English edition), the aim being to provide readers with a better, clearer arrangement of the chapters. In addition, the information published in the annual technical reports of the Waterfront Structures Committee since the publication of the 11th German edition have been incorporated in this new edition. The recommendations also take into account the new generation of standards consisting of Eurocode 7, the associated National Application Documents and supplementary national publications (DIN 1054:2010). In isolated instances, partial safety factors differing from those in the codes are specified on the basis of practical experience. Safety standards for ports, harbours and marine structures are therefore upheld. The recommendations satisfy the need for international acceptance in the planning, design, tendering, award of contract, construction, site supervision, acceptance and settlement of accounts for port, harbour and waterway facilities based on uniform approaches.
