Book excerpt: When I glance over my notes and records of the Sherlock Holmes cases between the years '82 and '90, I am faced by so many which present strange and interesting features that it is no easy matter to know which to choose and which to leave. Some, however, have already gained publicity through the papers, and others have not offered a field for those peculiar qualities which my friend possessed in so high a degree, and which it is the object of these papers to illustrate. Some, too, have baffled his analytical skill, and would be, as narratives, beginnings without an ending, while others have been but partially cleared up, and have their explanations founded rather upon conjecture and surmise than on that absolute logical proof which was so dear to him. There is, however, one of these last which was so remarkable in its details and so startling in its results that I am tempted to give some account of it in spite of the fact that there are points in connection with it which never have been, and probably never will be, entirely cleared up. The year '87 furnished us with a long series of cases of greater or less interest, of which I retain the records. Among my headings under this one twelve months I find an account of the adventure of the Paradol Chamber, of the Amateur Mendicant Society, who held a luxurious club in the lower vault of a furniture warehouse, of the facts connected with the loss of the British barque Sophy Anderson, of the singular adventures of the Grice Patersons in the island of Uffa, and finally of the Camberwell poisoning case. In the latter, as may be remembered, Sherlock Holmes was able, by winding up the dead man's watch, to prove that it had been wound up two hours before, and that therefore the deceased had gone to bed within that time-a deduction which was of the greatest importance in clearing up the case. All these I may sketch out at some future date, but none of them present such singular features as the strange train of circumstances which I have now taken up my pen to describe. It was in the latter days of September, and the equinoctial gales had set in with exceptional violence. All day the wind had screamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that even here in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced to raise our minds for the instant from the routine of life and to recognise the presence of those great elemental forces which shriek at mankind through the bars of his civilisation, like untamed beasts in a cage. As evening drew in, the storm grew higher and louder, and the wind cried and sobbed like a child in the chimney. Sherlock Holmes sat moodily at one side of the fireplace cross-indexing his records of crime, while I at the other was deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea-stories until the howl of the gale from without seemed to blend with the text, and the splash of the rain to lengthen out into the long swash of the sea waves. My wife was on a visit to her mother's, and for a few days I was a dweller once more in my old quarters at Baker Street.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) is known the world over as the creator of the famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes. But Conan Doyle was a prolific writer who produced a large body of work ranging from non-fiction and full-length novels to a wide-ranging collection of short stories. Doyle's first major success as a writer came with the debut of Sherlock Holmes in the 1887 publication of "A Study in Scarlet". Holmes was a popular sensation, and more stories followed. By 1891, Sherlock Holmes was enough to provide Doyle a living, but Doyle came to resent Holmes, who kept him from what he considered "more important" work. In 1893 he "killed" Holmes, as the detective and his archenemy, Professor Moriarty, plunged to their deaths at Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem". It was no mere publicity stunt. Doyle considered himself finished with Mr. Sherlock Holmes. The public uproar in reaction to Holmes' "death" shocked Doyle, with even his own mother complaining, and as the clamor continued he was forced to bring the detective back in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", published, to vast public sigh of relief, in 1901. Ironically, the character Doyle resented as a "distraction" from serious work would ultimately appear in fifty-six short stories and four novels, together with countless adaptations to films, television, cartoons, and modern pastiches by an assortment of authors. In fact, the "world's first consulting detective" is widely regarded, along with Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan, as the best-known fictional characters in the world.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. After being educated in England and Austria, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, and also practical botany at Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden. He worked as a ship's doctor and surgeon, and then set up his own medical practice in Portsmouth in 1882. His practice proved unsuccessful, and, having had several pieces of writing published (including academic articles and a short story), he focussed on writing fiction even though his difficulty in finding a publisher led him to continue his work, study, and writings in medicine. A Study in Scarlet, the first work featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, was published in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. Its sequel, The Sign of the Four, appeared in Lippincott's Magazine in 1890, and short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes were published in the Strand Magazine (in 1891, A Scandal in Bohemia introduced him to a wide audience). Made a Knight Bachelor by King Edward VII in 1902, Doyle was also appointed Knight of Grace of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1903. While he wrote on a broad range of topics, his other most popular works include Holmes novels The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902) and The Valley of Fear (1915), and science fiction and fantasy novels The Lost World (1912), The Poison Belt (1913), and The Land of Mist (1926) featuring Professor Challenger. Doyle died of a heart attack at his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, in 1930.

Book excerpt: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes A Study in Scarlet The Hound of the Baskervilles The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Sign of the Four "To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer—excellent for drawing the veil from men's motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his."
