Book excerpt: There is suf?cient need to document all the available data on biological control of rice diseases in a small volume. Part of this need rests on the global importance of rice to human life. In the ?rst chapter, I have tried to show that rice is indeed life for most people in Asia and shortages in production and availability can lead to a food crisis. While rice is cultivated in most continents, biological disease management attains special relevance to rice farmers of Africa, Asia, and also perhaps, Latin America. These farmers are resource-poor and might not be able to afford the cost of expensive chemical treatments to control devastating rice pathogens such as Magnaporthe oryzae (blast), Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (bacterial leaf blight), Rhizoctonia solani (sheath blight) and the virus, rice tungro disease. In an earlier volume that I developed under the title, Biological Control of Crop Diseases (Dekker/CRC Publishers, 2002), I included transgenic crops generated for the management of plant pathogens as biological control under the umbrella of a broad de?nition. Dr Jim Cook who wrote the Foreword for the volume lauded the inclusion of transgenic crops and induced systemic resistance (ISR) as a positive trend toward acceptance of host plant resistance as part of biocontrol. I continue to subscribe to this view.

Bioagents have been found effective in inhibiting growth of R. solani under in-vitro conditions. However, such organism fails to control the disease in the field due to various reasons. This book provides good information to identify various factors such as, effective isolates, time of application, mode, form and rate of bioagents, appropriate delivery system, right plant growth stage for application of bioagents, role of organic matter, soil pH, soil nutrition in effective biological management of rice sheath blight. References to the literature cited have been indicated throughout the text to obtain additional information. Bioagents are an important component of IPM as well as organic farming in modern agriculture. Therefore this book will be valuable and serve as source book to students, teachers, researchers and extension workers.

Presently, fungicides are still needed to manage these two devastating fungal pathogens. After two decades of research efforts, a toolbox has been assembled with the following components: (1) insight into pathogen genomic identity and pathogen avirulence (AVR) genes that can be used to enhance plant breeding; (2) new mapping populations and germplasm and genetic stocks that can be used as starting materials to identify effective host resistance (R) genes; (3) user-friendly disease evaluation methods that can be used to accelerate the identification and utilization of R genes; (4) validated effective R genes that are readily available for improving genetic resistance; (5) host genetic markers that can be used to accelerate the development of new resistant germplasms/cultivars; and (6) an improved understanding of resistance mechanisms that can facilitate the engineering of resistance in commercial varieties. Appropriate employment of these tools in breeding and crop protection will reduce production costs and create an environmentally benign, sustainable rice production system.

Three fungicides viz. Bavistin 50 WP, Tilt 250 EC and Folicour EW 250 were sprayed against R. solani causing sheath blight on three aman rice varieties viz. Hybrid Hera, BRRI Dhan-49 and BR-11.Control plot was sprayed with plain water. The experiments were laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. From the present findings it may be concluded that Folicour EW 250 was a promising fungicide for lowering sheath blight incidence and BR-11 was the best variety among the three rice varieties in aspect of yield.

Book excerpt: Sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the most important rice disease that can cause significant losses in grain yield and quality in the United States. Current management options for sheath blight consist of fungicides, tolerant cultivars and cultural practices. These options are not always very effective. Brassica plants have been used for soil fumigation to manage a variety of soilborne pathogens. Eleven plant species comprising of six Brassica juncea cultivars (Brand 199, Ruby Streak, Florida Broadleaf, Green wave, Red giant and Sheali Hong), two Brassica rapa cultivars (Southern Green and Napa), Brassica oleracea, Eruca sativa and Crotalaria juncea were evaluated for their efficacy on R. solani mycelia inhibition with or without soils collected from Texas, Arkansas or Mississippi rice fields. Evaluation of allyl isothiocynates (AITC) emission during the process of biofumigation was achieved by mixing B. juncea plant tissue at a rate of 0.25 or 0.5% (wt/wt) with either natural soil or pasteurized soil. The impacts of B. juncea soil amendment on the viability, aggressiveness, and sclerotia formation of R. solani AG1-1A was evaluated. B. juncea cover crop was integrated with host resistance and fungicide application to evaluate impact on rice sheath blight severity and rice yield. Four B. juncea cultivars (Brand 199, Ruby Streak, Florida Broadleaf, Green wave) consistently provided the greatest inhibition in all the soil types tested. Mycelial inhibition increased with an increase of B. juncea application rate. Plant tissue mixed with natural soils resulted in significantly higher AITC emission than in pasteurized soils. B. juncea amendment reduced numbers of sclerotia formed from the mycelium exposed to soils amended with B. juncea. Viability and aggressiveness of sclerotia or mycelium was reduced in soils amended with 3.2 % (wt/wt) of B. juncea. B. juncea cover crop significantly lowered sheath blight severity in all three years and led to a significantly higher grain yield in 2013 as compared to the fallow control. B. juncea cover cropping can be added to the rice disease management practices to enhance the efficacy of the current integrated pest management program for sustainable control of sheath blight in rice.
