Download or read book Recovery Zone Volume 2 written by Patrick Carnes and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of therapy and treatment means stepping into an unfamiliar, new world with very different perspectives, processes and even its own language at ties. The goal of this extraordinary world is to repair, restructure, and build the internal structures to cope with losses, trauma, dysfunction, toxic stress, and addiction. The first of the Recovery Zone series focuses on the often painful and difficult internal tasks for that transition. This first book in the series by Patrick Carnes is already regarded as a classic and has been a durable best seller for the past decade. The second volume is now here, and Dr. Carnes helps with the issue of "now that I know all of this, what do I do?" How to translate the inner transformation into my everyday world? I have discovered the real "me" but what does that mean for me to integrate ideas and skills with my relationships, work, values, lifestyle -- and be happy? Much has been written about overcoming trauma, grief, dysfunctional relationships and the sinkholes of the various addictions. The sequel of Recovery Zone provides real answers about how to stay in the zone when traumatic events, toxic stress, and easy access to escape surrounds you. The goal must be an "Ultimate To Do List" so you do not miss out on the life you want and feel a genuine call to do. Core to this platform is a resilience built on ten master skills and thirty operational strategies that users describing as "defining" passage into a new life. The joke about life being what happens when you are on the way to do something else, has little reality at the end of this second volume. Dr. Carnes is widely known for his personal sharing, his warm and engaging stories, and his ability to weave complex science into something that everyone can use. These materials have evolved with the help of over two thousand therapists and the experiences of many thousands of patients. Another vintage of classic Carnes's writing.

Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NOW A MAJOR FILM, STARRING STEVE CARELL AND BAFTA AND GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATED TIMOTHEE CHALAMET ‘It was like being in a car with the gas pedal slammed down to the floor and nothing to do but hold on and pretend to have some semblance of control. But control was something I'd lost a long time ago.’ Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age 11. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. He paints an extraordinary picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. Tweak is a raw, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful tale of the road from relapse to recovery and complements his father’s parallel memoir, Beautiful Boy. Praise for Nic Sheff:- ‘Difficult to read and impossible to put down.’Chicago Tribune 'Nic Sheff's wrenching tale is told with electrifying honesty and insight.' Armistead Maupin

Download or read book The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments written by Scott Weeman and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.
Download or read book Lived Experience Lifelong Learning Community Activism and Social Change written by Sharon Clancy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies and celebrates the learning adult educators can gain from the numerous sites of community activism, learning, and social change that are currently taking place across the globe. While the relentless push of neoliberalism has struck at the heart of adult education provision in many countries, including that provided by universities, institutions of further education, international development agencies, NGOs, vocational training centres and the local government sector, what can adult educators learn and what is being learnt when we turn to sites of community activism as a mechanism for broader social change? Drawing on empirical research, as well as stories and blogs about social change and transformation from those participating in community activist struggles, this book features diverse contributions from adult education practitioners, theorists and activist-researchers who share community activist practices from around the world and provide insight into the ways these have contributed to social change and political transformation in different spaces and communities. Each chapter and blog in this collection relate to different dimensions of community, democracy and dialogue and how this space has become one in which delimiting factors must constantly be fought. In these contributions, questions of critical pedagogy and voice, and contested notions of power, place and voice, are lived, felt and troubled in different national and international contexts. This book was originally published as a special issue of Studies in the Education of Adults.

Download or read book Sacred Journeys written by Stanley Scott Jr and published by Bysscott.org. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I stood on the deck of my San Francisco home, gazing out at the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, I felt a stirring in my soul. The rhythmic crashing of waves against the shore seemed to whisper ancient secrets, calling me to lands unknown. It was in this moment that I realized my journey—a journey of spiritual discovery and personal growth—was about to begin. For years, I had been deeply involved in my work with the ILWU Local 10, fighting for workers' rights and striving to make a difference in my community. But there was another battle I had been fighting, one that had nearly cost me everything: the battle against addiction. In 2011, I found my way into the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in recovery. Now, three years into my sobriety, I felt a calling to expand my horizons, to seek out new experiences that would deepen my spiritual understanding and strengthen my recovery. The idea of traveling to distant lands, not as an escape but as a pilgrimage of sorts, began to take root in my mind. It was then that I remembered the words of the great Maya Angelou: "Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends." These words resonated deeply within me, igniting a spark of curiosity and wonder that would lead me on an incredible journey across four continents. My path would take me to four distinct destinations, each with its own unique energy and spiritual significance: 1. Cancun and Chichén Itzá, Mexico - where ancient Mayan wisdom echoes through time 2. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic - where Caribbean rhythms pulse with resilience 3. Durban, South Africa - where unity flourishes in diversity 4. Honolulu, Hawaii - where the Aloha spirit embodies harmony with nature Little did I know that these four places, seemingly unconnected, would weave together a fabric of spiritual awakening and personal transformation. Each destination would offer its own lessons, its own challenges, and its own moments of profound insight. As I embarked on this journey, I carried with me the strength and values instilled in me by my parents, my experiences in the labor movement, and the spiritual principles I had learned in recovery. I was about to discover how these foundations would be tested, reinforced, and expanded through my encounters with ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, and the awe-inspiring power of nature. This book is not just a travelogue, but a testament to the transformative power of travel when undertaken with an open heart and a seeking spirit. It's an exploration of how God's handiwork is manifested in different corners of the world, and how the resilience of people across cultures can inspire us to push forward in our own lives and recovery journeys. Throughout these travels, I would find myself drawn to moments of prayer and meditation, often near bodies of water. From the beaches of Cancun to the Indian Ocean in Durban, from the Caribbean shores of Punta Cana to the Pacific waters of Hawaii, these moments of spiritual connection would become cornerstones of my journey, deepening my conscious contact with my Higher Power and reinforcing my commitment to recovery. As we set off on this journey together, I invite you to open your mind to the possibilities that lie ahead. For in the story of my travels, you may find echoes of your own spiritual journey, your own quest for meaning, and your own path to personal growth and recovery. Let us begin our sacred journey, stepping into the unknown with faith, curiosity, and a willingness to be transformed by the wonders that await us. Whether you're in recovery yourself, curious about different cultures, or simply seeking inspiration, I hope that my experiences will offer you insight, hope, and the courage to embark on your own journey of discovery. Remember, as we say in the rooms of recovery, "More will be revealed." So let's turn the page and see where this adventure takes us, one day at a time.
