Book An Inquiry into the Existence of Global Values

Download or read book An Inquiry into the Existence of Global Values written by Dennis Davis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world appears to be globalising economically, technologically and even, to a halting extent, politically. This process of globalisation raises the possibility of an international legal framework, a possibility which has gained pressing relevance in the wake of the recent global economic crisis. But for any international legal framework to exist, normative agreement between countries, with very different political, economic, cultural and legal traditions, becomes necessary. This work explores the possibility of such a normative agreement through the prism of national constitutional norms. Since 1945, more than a hundred countries have adopted constitutional texts which incorporate, at least in part, a Bill of Rights. These texts reveal significant similarities; the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, for instance, had a marked influence on the drafting of the Bill of Rights for South Africa, New Zealand and Hong Kong as well as the Basic Law of Israel. Similarly, the drafts of Eastern European constitutions reflect significant borrowing from older texts. The essays in this book examine the depth of these similarities; in particular the extent to which textual borrowings point to the development of foundational values in these different national legal systems and the extent of the similarities or differences between these values and the priorities accorded to them. From these national studies the work analyses the rise of constitutionalism since the Second World War, and charts the possibility of a consensus on values which might plausibly underpin an effective and legitimate international legal order.

  • Author : James H. Toner
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky

Download or read book Morals under the Gun written by James H. Toner and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Toner argues that the cardinal virtues are and must be the core values of the military. By embracing these values, the profession of arms serves as a moral compass in an increasingly confusing age. Building upon a bold introduction, which includes what many will regard as a surprising view of military ethics, Toner examines the four cardinal virtues—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice—and places each in the context of a compelling case study from recent U.S. military history. He discusses the Flinn Case, the Lavelle Affair, a B-52 crash in Washington State, and the courageous actions of Hugh Thompson after My Lai. Morals Under the Gun connects ethics and moral theology with the armed services, demonstrating that the task of preserving virtue, both personal and professional, is a noble, if imperfectible, task.

This story explains how Vogt joined his fellow Americans as they fought amongst themselves in search of a better vision. Book Ethics in a Cocoon

  • Author : V. David Schwantes
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2007-09
  • ISBN : 1434320049
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Ethics in a Cocoon written by V. David Schwantes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cocoon demonstrates, in easy-to-understand language, that ethics is about trust, and happiness. Trust is the essential ingredient to mutally-supportive and durable relationships, focused on reducing life's imperfections. Such relationships are the key to happiness. But we cannot live deep inside protective cocoons and still build trust and relationships. Instead, we must develop all the dimensions of what makes us human--intellectual (truth), spiritual (unity), moral (goodness), and aesthetic (beauty). Above all, we have to know ourselves, and be able to pass the "mirror test" every day. Our most important relationship, after all, being with ourself, and we don't discover our spiritual unity without a Personal Strategic Plan. Nor can we become ethically fit without enthusiasm, equanimity and a commitment to excellence--traits not found in cocoons. Only ethical fitness can help us find the resolution to the fundamental ethical dilemmas we all face--truth versus loyalty, short-term versus long-term, individual versus community, and justice versus mercy. This book suggests we use a variety of lenses to look at the world today--power, wealth, prestige, status. We use the lenses of economics, politics, and technology. We do not use nearly enough the lens of ethics--relationships, happiness, decency, and the golden mean. Once we're ethically fit--the result of continuous practice--we're able to recognize ethical dilemmas, approach them skillfully, and resolve them successfully. This book shows the way to such fitness, which is useful in any context or relationship, personal, local or global. Cocoon is a self-improvement book of the first order, with real-life macro-illustrations of the ethical dilemmas we face in a complex and crowded world in which too many of us pursue the dictates of false gods. It includes over 500 practice questions, and was developed as a textbook in the ethics courses the author taught to seniors at Ramapo College from 2002 th
