Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genres of Listening Xochitl Marsilli-Vargas explores a unique culture of listening and communicating in Buenos Aires. She traces how psychoanalytic listening circulates beyond the clinical setting to become a central element of social interaction and cultural production in the city that has the highest number of practicing psychologists and psychoanalysts in the world. Marsilli-Vargas develops the concept of genres of listening to demonstrate that hearers listen differently, depending on where, how, and to whom they are listening. In particular, she focuses on psychoanalytic listening as a specific genre. Porteños (citizens of Buenos Aires) have developed a “psychoanalytic ear” that emerges during conversational encounters in everyday interactions in which participants offer different interpretations of the hidden meaning the words carry. Marsilli-Vargas does not analyze these interpretations as impositions or interruptions but as productive exchanges. By outlining how psychoanalytic listening operates as a genre, Marsilli-Vargas opens up ways to imagine other modes of listening and forms of social interaction.

Book excerpt: Over 55% of your day is spent listening; yet only 2% of us have been trained in how to listen. What is poor listening costing you? Do you rush from meeting to meeting, your head buried in the last conversation you had, without time to think of the next? Or feel frustrated with unproductive discussions where the loudest in the room adds limited insight and drowns out everyone else? We usually think of these situations as communication problems; that we have not spoken our needs correctly or clearly. Yet, conflict, chaos and confusion are the costs of not listening. Many communication and listening books say the most important person in a conversation is the speaker - not true! This pocket-sized guide will help you to reconnect with your innate gift of deep listening, to create the right space to listen to yourself before you listen to others. You'll learn to listen beyond the words that are spoken, to add context and meaning and listen in to what's not being said. Deep Listening will help you move from confusion and conflict to thoughtful, insightful and powerful discussions that will transform not just your work, but your whole life.

Book A Listening Community

Download or read book A Listening Community written by Aquinata Böckmann and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book by Sister Aquinata Böckmann discusses the Prologue and chapters 1, 2, and 3 of the Rule of St. Benedict. In a lectio regulae she plumbs the depths of Benedict's vision. Listen, the first word of the Prologue, is a keyword that describes the main stance of the individual monastic, the superior, and the entire community. Listening to the Scriptures and in them to Christ guides individuals and the community on how to "run on the way of God's commandments" toward the goal of communal life in and with Christ. The first three chapters of the Rule concretize the principles of this communal spirituality of listening: the importance of a rule and a pastor for maintaining the community's attentiveness to life; the superior's responsibility to listen to individuals within the community; and the mutual listening between leader and community members, regardless of their age. As in her earlier books Sister Aquinata proves to be a true guide into the spirit of Benedict's Rule, which provides sound principles for listening in common in a community of life.

Book Listening

Download or read book Listening written by Judi Brownell and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2005 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new Third Edition of this text encourages students to view listening as a process involving six interrelated components. Each component is developed along the parallel dimensions of theory and skill building. Within the unifying theoretical framework of the HURIER model, students not only develop an understanding of the listening process, they also acquire specific, observable listening skills. This behavioral approach enables students to increase their listening effectiveness while developing an understanding of listening-related research and theory. The impact of culture, technology, and globalization is also explored. Ethical questions are raised through sidebars, and students are challenged to consider the responsibilities associated with listening behavior. Extensive self-assessment instruments, individual and group activities, and case studies further distinguish this engaging text. Students readily recognize the important role listening plays in their daily lives and acquire strategies to improve their listening behavior. New to the Third Edition The new edition has an increased emphasis on listening purpose and context as variables in determining which components of the HURIER model will be most important for listening effectiveness. The increased emphasis will move students from skill development to how skills are applied to achieve desired results. A new section on Emotional Intelligence now appears in Chapter 6, showing its relevance to interpreting messages and explaining how emotional intelligence can improve listening skills. A new section on appreciative listening appears in Chapter 3 to help students respond to today's stressful environment and the need for approaches to relaxation. Because the rapid increase in technology has changed the way we listen, more coverage on listening and technology has been added throughout the text. The new edition has been thoroughly updated with current research and new examples to provide the most recent information available. Praise for "Listening: Attitudes, Principles, and Skills" "[This text] includes fabulous activities and application exercises, case studies, and concise chapters. . . . I have already adopted this book and, in the face of other listening texts reviewed, will remain with this text. . . ." "Lisa Abramson, Western Oregon University" "The HURIER model and organizing the book around it are major strengths of this book. . .[which are] especially important when teachers are increasingly required to measure course outcomes as part of program assessment." "Thomas Marshall, Robert Morris University"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to Others is the first English-language volume dedicated solely to the vast corpus of the preeminent Brazilian director, Eduardo Coutinho (1933–2014). From his early work in the 1960s to his last, posthumous film in 2015, Coutinho transformed documentary filmmaking in Brazil and beyond. Described as an informal linguist and savage anthropologist, Coutinho filmed encounters with people different from himself that foregrounded their voices and his role as an attentive listener, creating a "cinema of listening." This collection brings together leading scholars of film, literature, visual culture, Brazilian studies, and Latin American studies, from the United States and Latin America, to examine both Coutinho's masterpieces and less studied films. Using a range of approaches, the contributors invite new ways of understanding the documentarian's trajectory and importance as his work transformed in response to dictatorship, democratization, and other political, social, and technological changes over the course of five decades. The volume also features original translations of a selection of Coutinho's writings and key texts by Brazilian critics to offer a historical perspective on his filmmaking and its reception.

Book Acoustemologies in Contact

  • Author : Emily Wilbourne
  • Publisher : Open Book Publishers
  • Release : 2021-01-19

Download or read book Acoustemologies in Contact written by Emily Wilbourne and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating collection of essays, an international group of scholars explores the sonic consequences of transcultural contact in the early modern period. They examine how cultural configurations of sound impacted communication, comprehension, and the categorisation of people. Addressing questions of identity, difference, sound, and subjectivity in global early modernity, these authors share the conviction that the body itself is the most intimate of contact zones, and that the culturally contingent systems by which sounds made sense could be foreign to early modern listeners and to present day scholars. Drawing on a global range of archival evidence—from New France and New Spain, to the slave ships of the Middle Passage, to China, Europe, and the Mediterranean court environment—this collection challenges the privileged position of European acoustical practices within the discipline of global-historical musicology. The discussion of Black and non-European experiences demonstrates how the production of ‘the canon’ in the cosmopolitan centres of colonial empires was underpinned by processes of human exploitation and extraction of resources. As such, this text is a timely response to calls within the discipline to decolonise music history and to contextualise the canonical works of the European past. This volume is accessible to a wide and interdisciplinary audience, not only within musicology, but also to those interested in early modern global history, sound studies, race, and slavery.
