Book Shaping Tomorrow s World

Download or read book Shaping Tomorrow s World written by Elke Seefried and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaping Tomorrow’s World tells the crucial story of how futures studies developed in West Germany, Europe, the US and within global futures networks from the 1940s to the 1980s. It charts the emergence of different approaches and thought styles within the field ranging from Cold War defense intellectuals such as Herman Kahn to critical peace activists like Robert Jungk. Engaging with the challenges of the looming nuclear war, the changing phases of the Cold War, ‘1968’, and the growing importance of both the Global South and environmentalism, this book argues that futures scholars actively contributed to these processes of change. This multiple award-winning study combines national and transnational perspectives to present a unique history of envisioning, forecasting, and shaping the future.

Book Conspiracy Theories and the People who Believe Them

Download or read book Conspiracy Theories and the People who Believe Them written by Joseph E. Uscinski and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conspiracy theories are inevitable in complex human societies. And while they have always been with us, their ubiquity in our political discourse is nearly unprecedented. Their salience has increased for a variety of reasons including the increasing access to information among ordinary people, a pervasive sense of powerlessness among those same people, and a widespread distrust of elites. Working in combination, these factors and many other factors are now propelling conspiracy theories into our public sphere on a vast scale. In recent years, scholars have begun to study this genuinely important phenomenon in a concerted way. In Conspiracy Theories and the People Who Believe Them, Joseph E. Uscinski has gathered forty top researchers on the topic to provide both the foundational tools and the evidence to better understand conspiracy theories in the United States and around the world. Each chapter is informed by three core questions: Why do so many people believe in conspiracy theories? What are the effects of such theories when they take hold in the public? What can or should be done about the phenomenon? Combining systematic analysis and cutting-edge empirical research, this volume will help us better understand an extremely important, yet relatively neglected, phenomenon.

  • Author : Lawrence R. Samuel

Download or read book Future written by Lawrence R. Samuel and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future is not a fixed idea but a highly variable one that reflects the values of those who are imagining it. By studying the ways that visionaries imagined the future—particularly that of America—in the past century, much can be learned about the cultural dynamics of the time. In this social history, Lawrence R. Samuel examines the future visions of intellectuals, artists, scientists, businesspeople, and others to tell a chronological story about the history of the future in the past century. He defines six separate eras of future narratives from 1920 to the present day, and argues that the milestones reached during these years—especially related to air and space travel, atomic and nuclear weapons, the women's and civil rights movements, and the advent of biological and genetic engineering—sparked the possibilities of tomorrow in the public's imagination, and helped make the twentieth century the first century to be significantly more about the future than the past. The idea of the future grew both in volume and importance as it rode the technological wave into the new millennium, and the author tracks the process by which most people, to some degree, have now become futurists as the need to anticipate tomorrow accelerates.

Book excerpt: In Him, titled after the exciting revelation in John 17:20-23 that we can be in Him, presents an inspiring collection of heartfelt poetry written by Mary Johnson at age ninety. Between the ages of eighty and ninety, she wrote three books, covering them lovingly with wallpaper, so she could give them freely to everyone. In Him is the last of her three books, though the first to be published in Marys memory by her children. Praising Him will be published soon, then Just Meditating. Marys poetry shares her personal relationship with her Savior. Some poems simply give praise to the Lord. Many poems speak of Jesus cruel death on the cross. She told of looking forward to heaven and of being sure you are going there. She gave glory to God who created man and our miraculous bodies. She examines prophecies regarding the end times, always pointing to the Bible and Jesus example for our lives. Her lifetime of Bible study and love of the Scripture is evident in her poetry. Through this knowledge, she referenced her poetry to the passage that inspired it. Marys faith and dedication to her Savior was demonstrated through her life of service and giving to others. Her life was an inspiration to her family, her numerous church friends and her community. Her family is blessed to be able to share their mothers gift of poetry with you.

Book The Wizard and the Prophet

Download or read book The Wizard and the Prophet written by Charles C. Mann and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling, award-winning author of 1491 and 1493—an incisive portrait of the two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt, whose diametrically opposed views shaped our ideas about the environment, laying the groundwork for how people in the twenty-first century will choose to live in tomorrow's world. In forty years, Earth's population will reach ten billion. Can our world support that? What kind of world will it be? Those answering these questions generally fall into two deeply divided groups--Wizards and Prophets, as Charles Mann calls them in this balanced, authoritative, nonpolemical new book. The Prophets, he explains, follow William Vogt, a founding environmentalist who believed that in using more than our planet has to give, our prosperity will lead us to ruin. Cut back! was his mantra. Otherwise everyone will lose! The Wizards are the heirs of Norman Borlaug, whose research, in effect, wrangled the world in service to our species to produce modern high-yield crops that then saved millions from starvation. Innovate! was Borlaug's cry. Only in that way can everyone win! Mann delves into these diverging viewpoints to assess the four great challenges humanity faces--food, water, energy, climate change--grounding each in historical context and weighing the options for the future. With our civilization on the line, the author's insightful analysis is an essential addition to the urgent conversation about how our children will fare on an increasingly crowded Earth.

Book Projecting the Future through Political Discourse

Download or read book Projecting the Future through Political Discourse written by Patricia L. Dunmire and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the rhetorical nature and function of representations of the future in political discourse, focusing on political actors’ use of hegemonic images of future “reality” to achieve their political goals. It argues that a key ideological dimension of political rhetoric lies in politicians’ use of projections of the future to legitimate policies and actions. This argument is grounded in systemic-functional and critical discourse analyses of the “Bush Doctrine,” the U.S. policy response to the September 11 terrorist attacks which sanctioned a “preemptive” military posture. By focusing on the discursive construction of the future, this project addresses a lacunae in critical discourse studies and calls attention to the crucial role that the discourse and practice of “futurology” has played in post-Cold War politics and society. It will be of value to scholars interested in the discourses of politics, the “war on terror,” U.S. national security, and futurology.
