Book excerpt: John Dewey s best-known and still-popular classic, "Democracy and Education, "is presented here as a new edition in Volume 9 of the Middle Works. Sidney Hook, who wrote the introduction to this volume, describes "Democracy and Education: " It illuminates directly or indirectly all the basic issues that are central today to the concerns of intelligent educators. . . . It throws light on several obscure corners in Dewey s general philosophy in a vigorous, simple prose style often absent in his more technical writings. And it is the only work in any field originally published as a textbook that has not merely acquired the status of a classic, but has become the one book that no student concerned with the philosophy of education today should leave unread. Dewey said in 1930 that "Democracy and Education, " was for many years the one [book] in which my philosophy . . . was most fully expounded. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The School and Society The Child and the Curriculum

Download or read book The School and Society The Child and the Curriculum written by John Dewey and published by Dover Publications. This book was released on 2001-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential forces in the shaping of American education, the famed philosopher and psychologist John Dewey (1859–1952) believed in "viewing the education of the child in the light of the principles of mental activity and processes of growth made know by modern psychology." As the administrator of the University of Chicago's laboratory school — which he established in 1896 and which was one of the first such schools in the United States — Dewey came to the realization that learning was a process starting from uncertainty and growing from the impulse which must begin with experience, and the curriculum must be made to relate to the students' interests. The two books in this volume — both short, but extremely influential — grew out of Dewey's hands-on experience with the laboratory school and represent the earliest authoritative statement of his revolutionary emphasis on education as an experimental, child-centered process, In The School and Society, he declares that we must "make each one of our schools an embryonic community life, active with types of occupations that reflect the life of the larger society and permeated with the spirit of art, history, and science." In The Child and the Curriculum, he stresses the importance of the curriculum as a means of determining the environment of the child, and allowing the teacher to guide children in asserting themselves, exercising their capacities, and fulfilling the destinies of their own nature. Gathered in this single convenient volume, these thought-provoking contributions by one of America's greatest thinkers in the field of pedagogy will be immense interest to educators, psychologists, parents, and anyone interested in the psychology and philosophy of childhood education.

Book The Adult Learner

Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. Book Experience and Education

Download or read book Experience and Education written by John Dewey and published by . This book was released on 1900* with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Experience and Education offers educators and teachers a positive philosophy of education. It evaluates the practices of both the traditional and the progressive schools and lucidly sets forth the defects of each of them. The volume, however, is in no sense controversial. Dr. Dewey, while considering current educational issues, interprets the meaning of a philosophicy of experience and the educational implications of the scientific method. A learning situation is described and concretely illustrated. The meanings of freedom, activities, discipline, control, and organized subject matter are here expounded within the context of educative experience as a process implying both continuity and interaction. Experience and Education defends no "ism". It offers no compromise. It steers clear of eclectic patching. Education itself is interpreted. Professional educators and laymen alike will here find definite answers to moot questions, but these answers are integral parts of an educational philosophy which makes possible united efforts in educational leadership. Here is a new light which will dissolve the fog now enveloping educational theory." (4th cover of the 60th anniversary edition)
