Book excerpt: Claims abound that Saudi oil money is fuelling Salafi Islam in cultural and geographical terrains as disparate as the remote hamlets of the Swat valley to sprawling megacities such as Jakarta. Similarly, it is often regarded as fact that Iran and Sunni Arab states are fighting proxy wars in foreign lands. This empirically grounded study challenges the assumptions prevalent within academic and policy circles about the hegemonic power of such Islamic discourses and movements to penetrate all Muslim societies. Through case studies of three universities with global outreach it illustrates how the transmission of ideas is a complex process, and how the outcome depends not just on the strategies adopted by the backers of ideologies but equally on the characteristics of recipient communities.

Muslims are raising questions about religious representations and authority. This has given rise to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses which challenge binary oppositions and dichotomies of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. It also leads to a dispersal of authority, a collapse of existing hierarchical structures and gender roles. This book further argues that the centre of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourses is shifting from the Arabic-speaking 'heartland' towards the geographical peripheries of the Muslim world and expatriate Muslims in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the political constellation of the Middle East, the trends discussed in this book hold important clues for the possible direction of future developments in that volatile part of the Muslim world.

Book excerpt: This is a substantially expanded edition of the author's seminal work The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourses: A Contemporary Case Study. Beginning with the case study of a Muslim basketball player who refused to stand up while the American national anthem was playing, the author documents the disintegration of the Islamic juristic tradition, and the prevalence of authoritarianism in contemporary Muslim discourses. The author analyzes the rise of what he describes as puritan and despotic trends in modern Islam, and asserts that such trends nullify the richness and diversity of the Islamic tradition. By declaring themselves the true soldiers of God and the defenders of religion, Muslim puritan movements are able to degrade women, eradicate critical thinking, and empty Islam of its moral content. In effect, the author argues, the self-declared protectors of Islam become its despots and oppressors who suppress the dynamism and vigor of the Islamic message. Anchoring himself in the rich Islamic jurisprudential tradition, the author argues for upholding the authoritativeness of the religious text without succumbing to authoritarian methodologies of interpretation. Ultimately, the author asserts that in order to respect the integrity of the Divine laws it is necessary to adopt rigorous analytical methodologies of interpretation, and to re-investigate the place of morality in modern Islam.

The books argues that this approach is diametrically opposed to the Islamic perspective and that we must disengage human scientific achievement from positivistic philosophical premises and reemploy these sciences within a systematic epistemological framework based on divine revelation, conferring honor upon all forms of knowledge, as having been bestowed upon man by their Creator.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study explores the discourses employed in three growingly popular global Islamic social media pages (GISMP), and examines their potential impact on identities of young Muslim followers across the globe. The initiatives are; Celebrate Mercy, Productive Muslim and Quran Weekly. The three sites are among today's most popular Islam-based social media pages. The analysis highlights each site's discourses about the Muslim identity, relevance of Qur'an to youth, and representation of central figure, Prophet Muhammad- as well as how the pages address issues like terrorism, violence and the religious other. The aim is to examine how major Islamic tenets are being propagated to masses of Muslim youth around the world today via social media, how this influences our understanding of the uses of social media, and how this potentially influences followers of the world's second largest religious population. A survey of site users was conducted to examine the uses/reactions of followers towards the initiatives' work. The survey yielded 900 responses from Muslim youth in eight different regions across the globe. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with the pages' founders to provide insight into their motivations and how they see their work influencing both page followers and the global Muslim community. Survey results illustrated that mainstream Muslim youth find leaders of Muslim majority countries unrepresentative of Islam, and feel under-represented in traditional media. They use social media outlets to reclaim their own narrative, express and boost their Muslim identity, and connect with members of the global Muslim community, the ummah. The study shows how certain GISMP have the potential to indirectly counter anti-Islam discourses in mainstream traditional/social media outlets. The study also points to the potential influence of popular GISMP in connecting and mobilizing young Muslims around the world.
