Download or read book Scalable Algorithms for Contact Problems written by Zdeněk Dostál and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive treatment of recently developed scalable algorithms for solving multibody contact problems of linear elasticity. The brand-new feature of these algorithms is their theoretically supported numerical scalability (i.e., asymptotically linear complexity) and parallel scalability demonstrated in solving problems discretized by billions of degrees of freedom. The theory covers solving multibody frictionless contact problems, contact problems with possibly orthotropic Tresca’s friction, and transient contact problems. In addition, it also covers BEM discretization, treating jumping coefficients, floating bodies, mortar non-penetration conditions, etc. This second edition includes updated content, including a new chapter on hybrid domain decomposition methods for huge contact problems. Furthermore, new sections describe the latest algorithm improvements, e.g., the fast reconstruction of displacements, the adaptive reorthogonalization of dual constraints, and an updated chapter on parallel implementation. Several chapters are extended to give an independent exposition of classical bounds on the spectrum of mass and dual stiffness matrices, a benchmark for Coulomb orthotropic friction, details of discretization, etc. The exposition is divided into four parts, the first of which reviews auxiliary linear algebra, optimization, and analysis. The most important algorithms and optimality results are presented in the third chapter. The presentation includes continuous formulation, discretization, domain decomposition, optimality results, and numerical experiments. The final part contains extensions to contact shape optimization, plasticity, and HPC implementation. Graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, computational engineering, and applied mathematics will find this book of great value and interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is motivated largely by a desire to solve shape optimization prob lems that arise in applications, particularly in structural mechanics and in the optimal control of distributed parameter systems. Many such problems can be formulated as the minimization of functionals defined over a class of admissible domains. Shape optimization is quite indispensable in the design and construction of industrial structures. For example, aircraft and spacecraft have to satisfy, at the same time, very strict criteria on mechanical performance while weighing as little as possible. The shape optimization problem for such a structure consists in finding a geometry of the structure which minimizes a given functional (e. g. such as the weight of the structure) and yet simultaneously satisfies specific constraints (like thickness, strain energy, or displacement bounds). The geometry of the structure can be considered as a given domain in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. The domain is an open, bounded set whose topology is given, e. g. it may be simply or doubly connected. The boundary is smooth or piecewise smooth, so boundary value problems that are defined in the domain and associated with the classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics are well posed. In general the cost functional takes the form of an integral over the domain or its boundary where the integrand depends smoothly on the solution of a boundary value problem.

Download or read book Optimization with PDE Constraints written by Ronald Hoppe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on PDE Constrained Optimization contains contributions on the mathematical analysis and numerical solution of constrained optimal control and optimization problems where a partial differential equation (PDE) or a system of PDEs appears as an essential part of the constraints. The appropriate treatment of such problems requires a fundamental understanding of the subtle interplay between optimization in function spaces and numerical discretization techniques and relies on advanced methodologies from the theory of PDEs and numerical analysis as well as scientific computing. The contributions reflect the work of the European Science Foundation Networking Programme ’Optimization with PDEs’ (OPTPDE).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: rd This book constitutes a collection of extended versions of papers presented at the 23 IFIP TC7 Conference on System Modeling and Optimization, which was held in C- cow, Poland, on July 23–27, 2007. It contains 7 plenary and 22 contributed articles, the latter selected via a peer reviewing process. Most of the papers are concerned with optimization and optimal control. Some of them deal with practical issues, e. g. , p- formance-based design for seismic risk reduction, or evolutionary optimization in structural engineering. Many contributions concern optimization of infini- dimensional systems, ranging from a general overview of the variational analysis, through optimization and sensitivity analysis of PDE systems, to optimal control of neutral systems. A significant group of papers is devoted to shape analysis and opti- zation. Sufficient optimality conditions for ODE problems, and stochastic control methods applied to mathematical finance, are also investigated. The remaining papers are on mathematical programming, modeling, and information technology. The conference was the 23rd event in the series of such meetings biennially org- ized under the auspices of the Seventh Technical Committee “Systems Modeling and Optimization” of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP TC7).

Download or read book From Convexity to Nonconvexity written by R.P. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers is dedicated to the memory of Gaetano Fichera, a great mathematician and also a good friend to the editors. Regrettably it took an unusual amount of time to bring this collection out. This was primarily due to the fact that the main editor who had collected all of the materials, for this volume, P. D. Panagiotopoulos, died unexpectedly during the period when we were editing the manuscript. The other two editors in appreciation of Panagiotopoulos' contribution to this field, believe it is therefore fitting that this collection be dedicated to his memory also. The theme of the collection is centered around the seminal research of G. Fichera on the Signorini problem. Variants on this idea enter in different ways. For example, by bringing in friction the problem is no longer self-adjoint and the minimization formulation is not valid. A large portion of this collection is devoted to survey papers concerning hemivariational methods, with a main point of its application to nonsmooth mechanics. Hemivariational inequali ties, which are a generalization of variational inequalities, were pioneered by Panagiotopoulos. There are many applications of this theory to the study of non convex energy functionals occurring in many branches of mechanics. An area of concentration concerns contact problems, in particular, quasistatic and dynamic contact problems with friction and damage. Nonsmooth optimization methods which may be divided into the main groups of subgradient methods and bundle methods are also discussed in this collection.
Download or read book Variational Hemivariational Inequalities with Applications written by Mircea Sofonea and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-12-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational-Hemivariational Inequalities with Applications, Second Edition represents the outcome of the cross-fertilization of nonlinear functional analysis and mathematical modelling, demonstrating its application to solid and contact mechanics. Based on authors’ original results, the book illustrates the use of various functional methods (including monotonicity, pseudomonotonicity, compactness, penalty and fixed-point methods) in the study of various nonlinear problems in analysis and mechanics. The classes of history-dependent operators and almost history-dependent operators are exposed in a large generality. A systematic and unified presentation contains a carefully selected collection of new results on variational-hemivariational inequalities with or without unilateral constraints. A wide spectrum of static, quasistatic, dynamic contact problems for elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic materials illustrates the applicability of these theoretical results. Written for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists, this book is also a valuable tool for graduate students and researchers in nonlinear analysis, mathematical modelling, mechanics of solids, and contact mechanics. New to the second edition Convergence and well-posedness results for elliptic and history-dependent variational-hemivariational inequalities Existence results on various optimal control problems with applications in solid and contact mechanics Existence, uniqueness and stability results for evolutionary and differential variational-hemivariational inequalities with unilateral constraints Modelling and analysis of static and quasistatic contact problems for elastic and viscoelastic materials with looking effect Modelling and analysis of viscoelastic and viscoplastic dynamic contact problems with unilateral constraints.
