Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the twentieth century, Americans' intense concern with sex crimes against children led to a wave of public discussion, legislative action, and criminal prosecution. Stephen Robertson provides the first large-scale, long-term study of how American criminal courts dealt with the prosecution of sexual violence against children. Robertson describes how the nineteenth-century approach to childhood as a single phase of innocence began to shift at the end of the century to include several stages of childhood development, prompting reformers to create legal categories such as statutory rape and carnal abuse to protect children. However, while ordinary New Yorkers' involvement in the prosecution of those offenses reshaped their understandings of who was a child and produced a new concern to establish the age of their sexual partners, their beliefs in childhood innocence and in a concept of sexuality centered on sexual intercourse remained unchanged. As a result, families' use of the law and jurors' decisions ultimately diminished the protection the new laws offered to children. Robertson's study, based on the previously unexamined files of the New York County district attorney's office, reveals the importance of child sexuality and sex crimes in twentieth-century American culture.

Book Romanians and Hungarians

Download or read book Romanians and Hungarians written by Phoebe Cho and published by Histria Books. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romanians and Hungarians have been linked throughout history since the Middle Ages. Both peoples have bravely fought to defend Christianity against Islamic terror, oftentimes shoulder to shoulder. Despite their close ties, controversies have often arisen leading to conflicts at various times throughout history, most recently at the beginning of World War II, when through the Diktat of Vienna, Hitler and Mussolini awarded large portions of Romanian territory to Hungary. In Romanians and Hungarians: Historical Premises, which was originally published during those tumultuous times, historian C. Sassu discusses the historical premises of Romanian-Hungarian relations and tries to explain, as lucidly as possible, the real value of the affirmations made, in the hope that minds unbiased by passion and not narrowed by self-interest will find it useful and opportune to understand the true elements of this controversy. Romanians and Hungarians: Historical Premises provides valuable insight for anyone seeking to understand the historical background of Romanian-Hungarian relations. The book includes illustrations and several useful maps that help the reader understand the issues presented.

Book A Plea for Memory

  • Author : Olumide Omoyele
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2013-12-06
  • ISBN : 1491886773
  • Pages : 119 pages

Download or read book A Plea for Memory written by Olumide Omoyele and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PLEA FOR MEMORY is just that: an entreaty to remembrance. It does not pretend to have the answers to unlocking the secrets of the future. It does, however, claim that by remembering, an understanding of the present is possible. Exactly what one does with knowledge of the umbilical cord connecting the past to the present in ones navigation of the future is a matter of choice. The author hopes only to trigger the readers imagination. He does not seek to preach an irrational belief or convince of a particular point of view. This work remembers the pasts of various African peoples, records the forceful subjugation of the present and poses the perennial question of the continents renaissance. It delves into the human condition and immerses itself in the themes of remembrance, history, pain, war, gods and death. The author is unapologetic in his refusal to follow the classic rules of poetry in the belief that freedom of expression must be unconstrained by mere regulations. He tries to abide by his own maxim: of all the freedoms, the greatest is that of thought.
