Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the wake of the Nazi regime's policies, European Jewish cultural property was dispersed, dislocated, and destroyed. Books, manuscripts, and artworks were either taken by their fleeing owners and were transferred to different places worldwide, or they fell prey to systematic looting and destruction under German occupation. The volume illuminates the political and cultural implications of this displaced property by presenting essays with newly discovered archival material and illustrations"--

Book Anti Semitism and Psychiatry

Download or read book Anti Semitism and Psychiatry written by H. Steven Moffic and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following World War II and the exposure of the concentration camps, psychiatry turned its attention to a vast range of cultural concerns with results that seemed to indicate a decline of stigma over time. However, it is now clear that whatever drives prejudices, especially in the case of anti-Semitism, was just dormant and perhaps not fully understood. Hate crimes and anti-Semitism broad recently re-emerged in Europe, and the United States followed shortly thereafter. The US Federal Bureau of investigation reports that New York City, which is still considered the most Jewish-friendly region in the US, experienced a 22% spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes in 2018 alone, with more extremes in other regions of the country. Neo-Nazi groups have grown stronger in the United States and abroad, often resulting in organized acts of violence. The recent Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, PA demonstrated that these acts are not limited to one-on-one interactions, but sometimes as prolific, large-scale act. The medical community is not immune from biases either. The Cleveland Clinic recently fired a young doctor after she publicly declared her wishes to inject Jewish patients with lethal substances, which is only one of many hateful comments she made on social media over the course of several years. Psychiatrists in particular grapple with this as they try to serve patients of both Jewish and non-Jewish descent who struggle to process these acts of hate. Despite all of this, there is no training and no resource to guide medical professionals through these challenges. The editors of the recent Springer book, Islamophobia and Psychiatry, recognize this gap in the literature and seek to develop another high-quality text to meet this need. Written by expert clinicians in global regions where these incidents are most prevalent, the book seeks to be neither political nor opinion-based; instead, the text takes an innovative cross-cultural psychiatric interaction, similar to what was done with Springer’s new Islamophobia book. Coverage will range from foci on the social psychiatric aspects of anti-Semitism to how it may in turn infuse clinical encounters between patients and clinicians. Written by experts in this area, the insight and expertise of psychiatrists from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds will focus on what psychiatrists need to know to combat the negative mental health impact that increasingly rise out of this particular phenomenon. Such a multi-cultural psychiatric approach has never been taken before for this topic. This discourse is the foundation for the primary goal of this book: to develop the tools needed to improve clinical outcomes for patients. Hence, this book aims to present an updated, comprehensive bio-psychosocial perspective on anti-Semitism at the interface of clinical psychiatry.

Book excerpt: Seed of Redemption presents a riveting, overarching commentary through which the reader can begin to appreciate the extraordinary depth and scope of this small Megillah, which touches on the very foundations of humanity and Klal Yisroel. This deep and greatly inspiring sefer is sweeping in scope, and yet it takes note of every detail; it is built almost entirely on Chazal and flows seamlessly with the text of the Megillah. Rabbi Aaron Lopiansky, author of Ben Torah for Life and Golden Apples, as well as other works in both English and Hebrew, has rendered this sefer as an English adaptation of the sefer Nachlas Yosef. It preserves the original insights while striving for the same readability in English as the original version provides in Hebrew. The sefer Nachlas Yosef is one of the most well-liked Hebrew commentaries on Megillas Rus. It was written by Rav Yoseph Lipowitz zt"l, a talmid of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel zt"l, the Alter of Slobodka.

Book Paul and Jesus

    Book Details:
  • Author : James D. Tabor
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2012-11-13
  • ISBN : 1439134987
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Paul and Jesus written by James D. Tabor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “compulsively readable exploration of the tangled world of Christian origins” (Publishers Weekly), religious historian James Tabor illuminates the earliest years of Jesus’ teachings before Paul shaped them into the religion we know today. This fascinating examination of the earliest years of Christianity reveals how the man we call St. Paul shaped Christianity as we know it today. Historians know almost nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have—the letters of Paul—as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity. Tabor shows how Paul separated himself from Peter and James to introduce his own version of Christianity, which would continue to develop independently of the message that Jesus, James, and Peter preached. Paul and Jesus illuminates the fascinating period of history when Christianity was born out of Judaism.

Book Cave of John the Baptist

Download or read book Cave of John the Baptist written by Shimon Gibson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first archaeological evidence of the truth of the gospel stories to emerge in modern times. Unique about this site, is that it contains archaeological evidence that comes to us from the very time of the personalities and events described in the Gospels. For here is the largest ritual bathing pool ever found in the Jerusalem area, found indeed in the village where John the Baptist was born, showing unmistakable signs of ritual use in the first century AD and containing the earliest ever Christian art, depicting John the Baptist as well as the three crosses of the crucifixion. By using the forensic techniques available to the modern archaeologist Gibson - a working field archaeologist of the highest credentials - and his international team of experts will be able to draw information from the drawings, pottery, coins, bones, remains of a ritual fire, pieces of cloth etc found in the cave and, by matching these up with the contemporary literary sources, allow them to shed light on each other. This is a unique opportunity to build up a picture of the very first Christians, how they lived and even what they believed. As Gibson writes- 'By fitting together all the new archaeological facts with the basic historical information that has been available (sometimes even buried) in scholarly literature for a long time -I believe I am able to throw an amazing amount of light on the personality and mission of John the Baptist -the man, the prophet.Who was he? Where did he come from? What were his beliefs and what was the baptism all about?...

Book Budoff Haggadah

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2023-03-29
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Budoff Haggadah written by and published by . This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Messianic Jewish Haggadah follows the traditional format and customs of the Ashkenazi Jewish community reflecting our own families' European Jewish backgrounds, with some minor text deletions to shorten the length of the Haggadah. This Messianic Jewish Haggadah also reflects our faith in the Messiah of Israel, Yeshua. As a result, some traditional blessings, statements and portions of texts have been slightly amended, and we have added texts from the B'rit Chadashah (New Testament). Messiah Yeshua presented himself at his last Passover meal with his talmidim as Israel's ultimate Passover Lamb, building on the redemptive lamb of our Egyptian Exodus, and pointing toward his provision of a greater redemption through the sacrifice of his life to bring full and complete forgiveness for sin for anyone who would accept him. Even with these changes, you will find that we have maintained the integrity and flow of the traditional Haggadah. It is our hope that this Haggadah will both remind us as Jewish people of our national and historic journey to freedom from Egypt, as well as encourage us as individual Jews with our personal and spiritual journey to freedom from sin through faith in our ultimate Passover Lamb, Messiah Yeshua.
