The latter observer attributed the difference in the effects of the removal of this gland in these two classes of animals to the difference in their dietary, rabbits and pigeons being vegetarians, while the dog is carnivorous. These experiments showed that it is one duty of the thyroid gland to destroy the poisons found in flesh. Dr. Thompson, one of the leading physicians of New York City, very reasonably argues from these facts that flesh food should be withheld in cases of diseases of this gland in which its normal activity is diminished. His experience has shown him that highly beneficial results may be obtained by withholding flesh in such cases. In the treatment of many cases of this kind during the past twenty years, the writer also has found the restriction of diet in these cases to vegetable products highly conducive to recovery. i, The amount of poisons produced in the?eathT. body and the extremely poisonous nature Jfiiglongssue of these substances may be inferred from the rapidity with which death occurs when tliere is any serious interruption in the process of poison elimination; for example, suppression of the action of the kidney results in death within a little more than forty-eight hours, from the accumulation within the body of the poisons which it is the special duty of the kidneys to eliminate. Interruption of the normal activity of the skin by a coating of varnish produces death in a few hours by the accumulation in the body of the various poisons that are eliminated by the skin. Interruption of the action of the lungs results in death within a few minutes, not directly because the supply of oxygen is cut off, but because of the failure of the lungs to expel from the body the deadly toxic...

Book The Natural Food of Man

Download or read book The Natural Food of Man written by Hereward Carrington and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating guidebook is an attempt to provide readers with information on what the author deems as "the natural food of mankind". In sum, the author is a proponent of vegetarianism and argues that "Meat is by no means a clean article of diet, but on the contrary a very unclean one; and many foods, supplying an equal amount of proteid matter, are to be preferred, for the reason that they supply less toxic material—which invariably accompanies flesh-meat."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From large-scale cattle farming to water pollution, meat— more than any other food—has had an enormous impact on our environment. Historically, Americans have been among the most avid meat-eaters in the world, but long before that meat was not even considered a key ingredient in most civilizations’ diets. Labor historian Wilson Warren, who has studied the meat industry for more than a decade, provides this global history of meat to help us understand how it entered the daily diet, and at what costs and benefits to society. Spanning from the nineteenth century to current and future trends, Warren walks us through the economic theory of food, the discovery of protein, the Japanese eugenics debate around meat, and the environmental impact of livestock, among other topics. Through his comprehensive, multifaceted research, he provides readers with the political, economic, social, and cultural factors behind meat consumption over the last two centuries. With a special focus on East Asia, Meat Makes People Powerful reveals how national governments regulated and oversaw meat production, helping transform virtually vegetarian cultures into major meat consumers at record speed. As more and more Americans pay attention to the sources of the meat they consume, Warren’s compelling study will help them not only better understand the industry, but also make more informed personal choices. Providing an international perspective that will appeal to scholars and nutritionists alike, this timely examination will forever change the way you see the food on your plate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Precisely Literal, Richly Revealing" Pairing the most literal English translation available with an illuminating in-text exposition of each verse in the Bible, this outstanding resource will helps strengthen your grasp on God's Word. By comparing the precise NASB with the magnified sentence structure of the Amplified Bible, readers are better able to appreciate the meaning of the scriptures as understood by their audience in the original languages. Known for its word-for-word literal accuracy, the New American Standard Bible, updated edition, is the #1 choice for in-depth inductive Bible study. And through its unique use of synonyms and definitions, the Amplified Bible both explains and expands the meaning of words in the text by placing amplification in parentheses and brackets after key words or phrases. Through multiple expressions, greater emphasis is given to the divine message as reflected in the original Greek and Hebrew. Now readers can benefit from both translation approaches with this side-by-side comparison that offers a more enriching experience with God's Word. NASB 12--For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13--But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. AMPLIFED BIBLE 12--For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection of realitys in a riddle or enigma], but then when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God]. 13--And so faith, hope, love abide faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope--joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love--true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.

These Books created and collected in Jack London's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. John Griffith London (born John Griffith Chaney; January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction. His most famous works include "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang", both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay", and "The Heathen". London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, socialism, and eugenics. He wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé "The People of the Abyss", "War of the Classes", and "Before Adam".
