Book Children As Research Subjects Science Ethics and Law

Download or read book Children As Research Subjects Science Ethics and Law written by Program in Medical Ethics Michael A. Grodin Director and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994-02-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is using children as research subjects ever justified? Are there limits to such use? Does the fact that children are medically and psychosocially different from adults have implications for research? What can we learn from the history of the use and abuse of children as research subjects? Do parents have the authority to volunteer their children for research projects? How should children participate in the decision to be involved in research? How should research risks be assessed and balanced? These perplexing questions and others are addressed by a distinguished group of experts in the field of biomedical and behavioral research with children. This book adopts an integrated multidisciplinary approach which uses science, ethics, and law as guides for exploring these most difficult issues. The tension between acquiring important new knowledge and fulfilling the obligation to protect children from exploitation and harm is a recurring theme. As the first book to be devoted solely to the science, ethics, and law of research with children, it is an indispensable resource to physicians, psychologists, educators, lawyers, ethicists, Institutional Review Board members, child advocates and others involved in performing or reviewing research with children.

Download or read book In the Name of Science written by F. Barbara Orlans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few arguments in biomedical experimentation have stirred such heated debate in recent years as those raised by animal research. In this comprehensive analysis of the social, political, and ethical conflicts surrounding the use of animals in scientific experiments, Barbara Orlans judges both ends of the spectrum in this debate -- unconditional approval or rejection of animal experimentation -- to be untenable. Instead of arguing for either view, she thoughtfully explores the ground between the extremes, and convincingly makes the case for public policy reforms that serve to improve the welfare of laboratory animals without jeopardizing scientific endeavor. This book presents controversial issues in a balanced manner based on careful historical analysis and original research. Different mechanisms of oversight for animal experiments are compared and those that have worked well are identified. This compelling work will be of interest to biomedical scientists, ethicists, animal welfare advocates and other readers concerned with this critical issue.

Book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint written by Albert Leffingwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vivisection Question I. By Vivisection is meant experimentation of any kind, painful or painless, made upon a living creature for an alleged scientific purpose. II. Within certain limitations and to a certain extent, the utility of animal experimentation makes it justifiable and right. III. The abuses to which the practice is liable are so great, that vivisection should be regulated by law, and placed under the control and supervision of the State. In order to prove need of the legal regulation here advocated, it has been necessary to refer to cruelties and abuses, incident to the practice as now carried on. The revelation of these has induced criticism; but I cannot see how otherwise, there could be adduced any proof of necessity for legal control. In one respect, the task made necessary by controversy on this subject has been exceedingly distasteful. It is by no means a pleasant literary employment to point out the inaccuracies or to demonstrate the blunders made bv men of national repute in their opposition to the regula tion of experimentation. But no fact is more clearly apparent than that too eager laudation of vivisection without control has evoked a carelessness of statement. Book Anti Vivisection and the Profession of Medicine in Britain

Download or read book Anti Vivisection and the Profession of Medicine in Britain written by A.W.H. Bates and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores the social history of the anti-vivisection movement in Britain from its nineteenth-century beginnings until the 1960s. It discusses the ethical principles that inspired the movement and the socio-political background that explains its rise and fall. Opposition to vivisection began when medical practitioners complained it was contrary to the compassionate ethos of their profession. Christian anti-cruelty organizations took up the cause out of concern that callousness among the professional classes would have a demoralizing effect on the rest of society. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the influence of transcendentalism, Eastern religions and the spiritual revival led new age social reformers to champion a more holistic approach to science, and dismiss reliance on vivisection as a materialistic oversimplification. In response, scientists claimed it was necessary to remain objective and unemotional in order to perform the experiments necessary for medical progress.
