Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shales and mudstones are the most poorly understood sedimentary rock type. They comprise approximately two thirds of the stratigraphic column and contain the bulk of recorded earth history. In the future, understanding shales will be crucial for a wide variety of studies. Yet, getting a balanced perspective of research on these fascinating rocks is difficult because it is dispersed over so many subdisciplines. The two volumes of this book present up to date research on a wide range of topics in shale geology, and were assembled with the goal to ease access to this engaging field of research. Chapter introductions were written by experts in their field, and are intended to define the state of the art, to provide access to pertinent literature, and to set the stage for the corresponding research papers. Volume I covers basin-scale analysis, sedimentology and paleontology of shales. Volume II supplements this perspective with detailed treatments of petrography, burial history, petrophysics, geochemistry, and economic aspects of shales. The broad coverage of topics should make this book a valuable source of information for those that want to keep informed about current developments in shale research, and a source of inspiration for those interested to enter this exciting field of study.

Book Lithofacies Paleogeography and Geological Survey of Shale Gas

Download or read book Lithofacies Paleogeography and Geological Survey of Shale Gas written by Chuanlong Mou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. This book presents new theory and methods on compiling lithofacies paleogeographic maps as a key tool for guiding geological survey on shale gas. The fundamental goal of the shale gas geological survey is to find the ‘dessert’ area. It is therefore suggested that the lithofacies paleogeographic study and the technique of mapping should be a solid scientific basis for shale gas exploration. It takes Ordovician Wufeng-Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Sichuan Basin and its adjacent area as an example to illustrate how to find the ‘dessert’ area of shale gas in geological survey phase by compiling lithofacies paleogeographic map. It’s a valuable reference for both scientific research and teaching courses in the fields of sedimentary lithofacies, paleogeography, stratigraphy, and oil and gas.

Book Sedimentology of Shale

  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461299810
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Sedimentology of Shale written by Paul E. Potter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We wrote Sedimentology of Shale primarily because we lacked a handy, reasonably comprehensive source of information and ideas about shales for students in our sedimentology program. It was also our feeling that the time for shales to receive more study had finally arrived. Sedimentology of Shale also seems very timely because today more sedimentologists are interested in shales. Certainly in the last five years the pace of shale research has no ticeably quickened because the role of shales as important sources of oil, gas, heavy metals and as a long understudied part of the earth's geologic his tory has been recognized. Noteworthy developments include the elucida tion of the importance of trace fossils in shales, the discovery of thick sequences of overpressured shales in regions such as the Gulf Coast (which have important implications for hydrocarbon migration and faulting), the ex tension of the principles of metamorphic facies to the realm of low tempera ture diagenesis by study of the organic matter in shales, and shales as ul timate sources for mineral deposits. Accordingly, we decided it was timely to write a book on shales. In one respect, however, ours is an unusual book. Most books in geology are produced after one or two decades of progress have been made in a field and attempt to summarize and evaluate that progress.

Book Sedimentology Micropaleontology Geochemistry and Hydrocarbon Potential of Shale from the Cretaceous Lower Colorado Group in Western Canada

Download or read book Sedimentology Micropaleontology Geochemistry and Hydrocarbon Potential of Shale from the Cretaceous Lower Colorado Group in Western Canada written by J. D. Bloch and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Group is the thickest and most regionally extensive succession of Cretaceous rocks in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Colorado Group shales contain proven source rocks and hydrocarbon reserves, yet the details of their origin, composition, distribution, and maturity are largely unknown. This report presents research undertaken to address this knowledge gap and to identify distinct shale units in the studied interval, evaluate the depositional & facies controls on shale composition, and provide quantitative mineralogy & bulk chemical properties that may be used for wireline calibration and source rock & reservoir characterization. The research consisted of a basin-scale multidisciplinary study that refines the Cretaceous shale stratigraphy and provides a regional basis for further detailed exploration & exploitation of Colorado Group hydrocarbon & mineral resources. The study integrates geochemical, biofacies, and sedimentological data to identify discrete shale formations within the previously undifferentiated Group. Detailed geochemical and facies analyses provide new information on source-rock distribution and maturity. Results are also presented from pyrolysis & mineralogical studies, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and identification of diagenetic processes.

Book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis

Download or read book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis written by Andrew Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a practical handbook for those engaged in the task of analyzing the paleogeographic evolution of ancient sedimentary basins. The science of stratigraphy and sedimentology is central to such endeavors, but although several excellent textbooks on sedimentology have appeared in recent years little has been written about modern stratigraphic methods. Sedimentology textbooks tend to take a theoretical approach, building from physical and chemical theory and studies of mod ern environments. It is commonly difficult to apply this information to practical problems in ancient rocks, and very little guidance is given on methods of observation, mapping and interpretation. In this book theory is downplayed and the emphasis is on what a geologist can actually see in outcrops, well records, and cores, and what can be ob tained using geophysical techniques. A new approach is taken to stratigraphy, which attempts to explain the genesis of lithostratigraphic units and to de-emphasize the importance of formal description and nam ing. There are also sections explaining principles of facies analysis, basin mapping methods, depositional systems, and the study of basin thermal history, so important to the genesis of fuels and minerals. Lastly, an at tempt is made to tie everything together by considering basins in the con text of plate tectonics and eustatic sea level changes.

Book Mudstone Primer

    Book Details:
  • Author : O. Remus Lazar
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 9781565763401
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Mudstone Primer written by O. Remus Lazar and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two-thirds of the sedimentary record is composed of rocks dominated by grains smaller than 62.5 micrometers. These fine-grained sedimentary rocks serve as sources, reservoirs, and seals of hydrocarbons, influence the flow of groundwater, and can be rich in metals. These rocks have long been mined for clues into the past global carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and silica cycles, and associated climate and oceanography. These rocks are heterogeneous at many scales and formed via a range of depositional processes. Recent developments in drilling and completion technologies have unlocked significant hydrocarbon reserves in fine-grained sedimentary rocks and have triggered an explosion of interest in the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and diagenesis of these rocks. This Mudstone Primer covers this variability to better characterization and interpretation of mudstones. Definitions of key terms and a naming scheme for mudstones are provided followed with practical steps for studying mudstones in thin sections. Additional guidelines and a set of tools that facilitate consistent, repeatable, and efficient (time wise) description and capture of mudstone variability at thin section, core, and outcrop scale are included in seven appendices. This Mudstone Primer includes hundreds of Paleozoic to Tertiary examples of physical, biological, and chemical features that illustrate mudstone heterogeneity at lamina to bedset scales. The authors hope that individual workers will take the provided examples and interpretations and use them to enhance their own investigation strategies.
