Book Shaking the Foundation

Download or read book Shaking the Foundation written by Sylvia A. Johnson and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I cannot think that the world, as we see it, is the result of chance; & yet I cannot look at each separate thing as the result of design." English naturalist Charles Darwin wrote this in 1860, a year after publishing his theory of evolution. His words show the personal struggle of a man forced by his own observations to answer the fundamental question—Where do we come from?—in a revolutionary new way. Darwin's internal battle reflects a broader public struggle—the attempt to reconcile scientific fact with religious faith. Shaking the Foundation: Charles Darwin and the Theory of Evolution follows this battle, from the supporting theories of fellow scientists, to the opposing voices of clergymen, to twenty-first-century supporters of Intelligent Design. Through quotations from letters and other contemporary sources, you'll meet the personalities and ideas involved in the debate. You'll also examine some of the legal cases that brought evolution into the U.S. courtroom. These cases include the famous Scopes trial in 1925 and the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District case in 2005, which tested a school policy requiring the teaching of Intelligent Design. Through these and other debates, you'll learn more about the struggle over one of life's most profound questions.

Foundation offers something completely different for novices and athletes alike: a simple program with powerful and proven results that will remedy bad posture, alleviate back pain, and help readers break through fitness challenges and plateaus. Dr. Eric Goodman, a brilliant and dynamic young chiropractor, teams up with Peter Park, one of the top trainers in the United States, to radically redefine the core--shifting the focus from the front of the body to the back. Their groundbreaking approach works to strengthen the lower back and the full posterior chain and correct poor movement patterns by addressing mechanical imbalances and weaknesses. Foundation training involves simple movement patterns and is equipment free, creating maximum power, flexibility, and endurance. Word-of-mouth enthusiasm has inspired both Hollywood luminaries and world-class athletes to make Foundation training the core of their fitness programs. Book The Shaking of the Foundations

Download or read book The Shaking of the Foundations written by Ronald Fletcher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, the author of the classic Family and Marriage in Britain (1962), Professor Ronald Fletcher here makes a new appraisal of the family in society today. Comprehensive in its range of material and straightforward in style, the book represents his thoughts on the family and marriage in Britain in the 1980s. Since the 1969 Divorce Reform Act, many anxieties had been felt and voiced about the trends of divorce, marital breakdown, the growing instability of the family and so on. The changes, however, were hard to discern and assess, statistical records difficult to interpret reliably. Ronald Fletcher discusses these continuing anxieties and presents a thorough-going critical review of these changes and statistics. In his conclusions he emphasises the continuing importance in modern society of the family and marriage. Professor Fletcher examines the family as both an agent and symptom of change. He explores in detail the relation between family life and the deeper long-term changes which had been at work throughout the twentieth century – the disrupting experience of world wars; the rapidity of technological and social change; the many-sided changes in communications; the spread of secularisation; and changes in education – seeking a profound and satisfactory causal explanation. He ends with a consideration of the future of the family and society alike, and what our social and educational policies ought to be if certain values and qualities of life are to be sustained. The Shaking of the Foundations is the companion volume to The Abolitionists (1989), in which Ronald Fletcher critically examines the anti-family arguments of the previous thirty years.

Book Shaking Up the City

Download or read book Shaking Up the City written by Tom Slater and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaking Up the City critically examines many of the concepts and categories within mainstream urban studies that serve dubious policy agendas. Through a combination of theory and empirical evidence, Tom Slater “shakes up” mainstream urban studies in a concise and pointed fashion by turning on its head much of the prevailing wisdom in the field. To this end, he explores the themes of data-driven innovation, urban resilience, gentrification, displacement and rent control, neighborhood effects, territorial stigmatization, and ethnoracial segregation. With important contributions to ongoing debates in sociology, geography, urban planning, and public policy, this book engages closely with struggles for land rights and housing justice to offer numerous insights for scholarship and political action to guard against the spread of an urbanism rooted in vested interest.

Book The Forgotten Books of the Bible

Download or read book The Forgotten Books of the Bible written by Robert Williamson Jr. and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're probably missing some of the most interesting books of the Bible. In the Jewish tradition, the five books known as "The Five Scrolls" perform a central liturgical function as the texts associated with each of the major holidays. The Song of Songs is read during Passover, Ruth during Shavuot, Lamentations on Tisha B'av, Ecclesiastes during Sukkot, and Esther during the celebration of Purim. Together with the five books of the Torah, these texts orient Jewish life and provide the language of the faith. In the Christian tradition, by contrast, these books have largely been forgotten. Many churchgoers can't even find them in their pew Bibles. They are rarely preached, come up only occasionally in the lectionary, and are not the subject of Bible studies. Thus, their influence on the lives and theology of many Christians is entirely negligible. But they deserve much more attention. With scholarly wisdom and a quick wit, Williamson insists that these books speak urgently to the pressing issues of the contemporary world. Addressing themes of human sexuality, grief, immigration, suffering and protest, ethnic nationalism, and existential dread, he skillfully guides readers as they rediscover the relevance of the Five Scrolls for today.

Download or read book I Can t Stop Shaking written by Sandy Kamen Wisniewski and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Can't Stop Shaking, Over 10 Million People are Affected By Essential Tremor, provides important medical information, tips on living with Essential Tremor, as well as personal accounts of people living with Essential Tremor. In the medical section Dr. Peter A LeWitt, a neurologist who sub-specializes in movement disorders, answers questions about Essential Tremor. Dr. LeWitt has been practicing neurology and been involved with Essential Tremor since 1980. Dr. LeWitt explains in simple terms what Essential Tremor is, how it affects people, and medical treatments for Essential Tremor. In the personal stories section people who have Essential Tremor speak candidly and openly about what life is like living with Essential Tremor. Each person has their own way of dealing with it, some with great optimism, others with equally great frustration. Readers who have Essential Tremor will no doubt see bits and pieces of themselves within these stories. There are also dozens of tips on better ways of living with Essential Tremor that will help the sufferer to better cope with their handicap. Some of the tips inside the book are: .Use an electric toothbrush. .Tell the people at your bank that you have ET .Use credit and debit cards instead of writing checks. .Use eating utensils that have large handles. .Use a 1 in.-deep dish that has vertical sides. .Hold your drinking glass in the palm of your non-dominant hand and steady it with your dominant hand. .Eat with the utensil pointing toward you with as much twist to your wrist as you can manage. Sandy Kamen Wisniewski was diagnosed with ET when she was 14 years old. During her childhood she hid her tremor by tucking her hands in her pockets or up her sleeves. She also avoided many social situations where eating in public was necessary. She spent her young adulthood unaware the so many people had Essential Tremor so she struggled alone. Then in 1999 she learned that a group of people with Essential tremor were meeting at a public library and were having a neurologist as a guest speaker. After the meeting she realized for the first time she wasn't alone. In 2001 Sandy found the courage to finally speak out about Essential Tremor and wrote a personal essay titled I Couldn't Stop Shaking, which was published in Woman's Day magazine in May 2001. Since that time she has written numerous articles on Essential Tremor, spoken to groups around the country about Essential Tremor, in addition to being interviewed on Chicago's WGN news and WLS News. She also appeared on the Debra Duncan Show, a Disney sponsored talk show, about ET. Sandy is a freelance writer, business owner, mother and wife. She resides in Libertyville, Illinois.
