Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Sonnet Story 1592-1598, Restoring the Sonnets Written to the Earl of Southampton to Their Original Books and Correlating Them With Personal Phases of the Plays of the Sonnet Period At the present time the most unhesitating supporter of Halliwell - Phillipps' theory is naturally Sir Sidney Lee, whose Life of William Shakespeare is based upon the Out lines. Sir Sidney, like halliwell-phillipps, disallows the possibility Of finding self-revelation in the plays or sonnets, and confines the biographical portions Of his work largely to the literal details used by halliwell-phillipps specifically eschewing what he refers to as esthetic criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Sonnet Story 1592-1598, Restoring the Sonnets Written to the Earl of Southampton to Their Original Books and Correlating Them With Personal Phases of the Plays of the Sonnet Period There are at present, and have been for some years past, two very divergent theories regarding the manner in which Shakespearean biography should be undertaken. Mr. J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps, who confined his efforts nearly altogether - especially during the last two decades of his life - to antiquarian research, and who, while attaining an authoritative standing in this capacity, has never been regarded as a critical authority by scholars, was the original exponent of one of these theories: which insists that it is hopeless to seek biographical light upon Shakespeare from his own works. In the preface to his Outlines of the Life of Shakespeare, without advancing any reason other than his opinion, he writes: "In the absence of some very important and unexpected discovery, the general desire to penetrate the mystery which surrounds the personal history of Shakespeare cannot be wholly gratified. Something, however, may be accomplished in that direction by a diligent and critical study of the materials now accessible, especially if determined care be taken to avoid the temptation of endeavouring to illustrate that history by his writings, or to decipher his character or sensibilities through their media... for it must surely be admitted that the exchange of the individuality of the man for that of the author is the very essence of dramatic genius, and, if that is so, the higher the genius the more complete will be the severance from the personality." Book Shakespeare Identified

Download or read book Shakespeare Identified written by J. Thomas Looney and published by Veritas Publications. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920 J. Thomas Looney's "Shakespeare" Identified introduced the idea that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, was the man behind the pseudonym "William Shakespeare." This Centenary Edition-with the first new layout since the 1920 U.S. edition-is designed to enhance readers' enjoyment as they make their way through Looney's fascinating account of how he, shining light from a new perspective on facts already known to Shakespeare scholars of his day, uncovered the true story of who "Shakespeare" actually was and how he came to write his works. Even as the centenary of its publication approaches, "Shakespeare" Identified remains the most revolutionary book on Shakespeare ever written. Since its appearance several generations of scholars have deepened and extended Looney's original findings, further substantiating his claim that Edward de Vere was indeed the author of the dramatic and poetic works widely regarded as the greatest in the English language. Perhaps most importantly for scholars, this edition of Looney's classic text identifies the sources of more than 230 passages he quoted from other works, providing readers for the first time with accurate information on the books and papers he consulted in his research. A Bibliography at the end of the book supplements those notes for easy reference to Looney's sources. So if you're new to the Shakespeare authorship question, or even if you've read widely on the subject, get set to enjoy the book that novelist John Galsworthy called the best detective story he had ever read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing both on the tenets of classical rhetoric and on contemporary critical theory, Heather Dubrow here offers a bold and persuasive reading of Shakespeare's nondramatic poems. She calls into question prevailing critical views of Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, and the sonnets and asserts that in these poems Shakespeare uses rhetoric with great subtlety and force to effect characterizations as rich in psychological and moral complexities as those found in the plays.
